You make a point about DiRT 2, I think that list is off. Anyway, personally I don't give a damn whether this game is popular with everyone or not. Obviously I'd like it to do well so there'll be a sequel, but flight simulation isn't a huge genera, so I wouldn't except it to be selling as well as Halo anyway. I'm just hoping it will be good enough to meet my standards.

You know, in online games, there's a lot of trash-talking about who's the best.
With some of the cool Birds of Prey videos on youtube, you have to imagine it generates some interest. Now combine cool user made online dogfight videos with the fact that most every gamer thinks they are the best - and you have a recruiting tool to try and suck in a larger player base. If we get camera controls useful for making movies from online action replays - then users can flood youtube with cool dogfights showing off an encounter in which they "pwned" somebody. Talk about your skills and what not - I'm sure every gamer thinks they are "skilled", but can they apply it to flying with guns? Seriously, combat flying games are fun - it's just the learning curve that people have to get over to get them hooked on the game. I think with the beauty of the sim and the ego of gamers in general - we can goad people into working through the learning curve to enjoy the game. The first time I saw IL2 was an online dogfight on youtube and I went and picked the game up. We can promote the game ourselves through user created videos fairly easily. |

We already know flight simulation is a VERY niche genre. Less then 1% of the gaming community are flight simmers.
Besides, gamefaq's #1 game is Batman...I too think that they are a 'little' off. |

A game doesn't have to sell like Halo to be a success. I believe a goal was posted on the forum and it sounded reasonable for the genre compared to the number of gamers out there. Those game sites cater to teen/pre-teen for the most part, so it's not surprising this game isn't on their radar. The rest of us need games that interest us too. ;)

I don't see why most people who own an xbox or ps3 and have access to the internet wouldn't know about it, since theres a very prominent demo on the Playstation store, and I imagine the same on xbox. I think that most people who are interested in games that feature 'flying around and shooting things' would be impressed with the il-2 demo, whether they prefer the arcade or sim style.
I don't see how that poll on gamefaqs proves anything though. |
