I found mages/beholders basic attack much more stronger reliable when fighting resistant unit types, I also dropped them because they lowered morale of my elves.

True, I tended to leave them in reserve while doing the tougher battles against undead and take inquisitors instead (which suck at everything else). And I also love demonologists.

The problem is, demonologists were very rare in my game and couldn't keep up with my leadership. And even though the soothsayers' heal ability is crap and the blizzard just average, they are surprisingly good even as a single-purpose shooter unit, especially against ghosts and skeletons.

I used them on and off until the very end.

Inquisitors are good against undead and demons, and their rage refilling ability is nice to gear up for the next battle (and to actually bless units when fighting undead/demons). Some additional resurrection can't hurt, either. They suck otherwise, but then again, a lot of battles are against undead or demons...
As I recently arrived in Demonis, I thought about using soothsayers for their blizzard ability. Not sure if I have enough mind runes for the talent that negates the morale penalty (rangers are awesome).
