In short, comparing the volume of water to the volume of the earth is very misleading. It implies that we can make use of (aka live) anywhere 'inside' the earth, where as every drop of water 'inside' that water spear can be made use of.

Comparing the surface area of the land to the surface area of the water is a more honest comparison IMHO.

Excellant point!

When you say 'spear' do you mean "sphere"? I dont know what you mean by spear, a spear to me is a pointed polearm.

Would not a better example therefore be the volume of the water compared to the livable surface area? Hmm livable would discount the Qattara depression, the South Pole and some Mountains...

And is what I was refering to when I said..

If they wanted to do a fair and honest job of 'spear' comparisons they should have shown a spear of the ground above sea level (livable area).. Which would have been about 1/4 the size of the water spear..

Great minds think alike! ;)

who cares point taken its easy to pack and send to space, edit also easy to contaminate it all, after all contamination is VOLUMETRIC not flat

No wonder so many posts get locked.

Ace.. you should just mellow out and just enjoy looking at something for what it is..

And don't worry about your spelling mistake.. Farber made his "Excellent point" of making an excellent spelling mistake, and yes Raaaid we can see that you really want to talk about how easy it would be to contaminate the water.. gzeus.. Go ahead guys and make a train wreck out of every post you can find. You guys are embarrassing.

I will not visit this post again. Have fun and enjoy the pic in the first post of this thread.

No need.. mellow as they come! And I do enjoy all the clever ways people come up with to re-invent the chicken little theme of the sky is falling

What gave you the impression that I am worried about it?

EZ just put him on ignore hes a troll.

Yes we don't live in the earth but that's not what this is about what this is showing is how little water we have.

Water is the source of all life on our planet and we continue to use it as a dumping ground and poison it with oil spills. So to anyone with an ounce of common sense when they see this fact put into a image like that should think about how we MUST keep it clean and not continue down the route we are currently taking.

As far as your point "Ace of Nothing" if you had actually read the article it stated that the water that life is sustained from is actually the tiny sphere under the other two water sphere's...

Lets see what your "maths" makes of that...

Ze-Jamz 08-25-2012 09:46 AM

Lol...Krupi's getting his boxing gloves on...like it

I agree totaly with what hes just wrote too..I think some are taking this way out of context..

Its not impying its a mathmatical certainity, its more a 'Heads up' awareness picture...thats what I took it for the moment I see it...analzing it I didnt

Madfish 08-25-2012 10:23 AM

Yeah, Ze-Jamz. Actually anyone with even just the slightest experience in math or engineering would see the picture like that. It's definately not 100% correct nor does it want to be. It's just showing the simple fact that water on earth is actually very rare. Unpolluted water or fresh water is even more rare.

Although I did know about the situation I never really imagined it visually. Thanks for the share, really inspiring to look at. A great awareness picture.

It also looks like the Americans have nicked it all! :-D
