Everyone seems to have their own "this fixed it" method for launcher crashes. I hate to say it but at this point it's just superstition and speculation until we know what causes it.
Testing different settings will definitely help the process of finding the cause but until a method or fix is tested by many users and proven to work, don't expect something like this to be a miracle fix.
For example, I don't even have an anti virus on my machine and I still get crashes, so that first step is null. I've verified my local files multiple times with no effect. Deleted my cache folder with no effect. Haven't tried disabling the steam cloud/community thing, but I'd be very shocked if that has anything to do with gameplay as I'm pretty sure that stuff isn't actively doing anything during/just before a launcher crash, but I haven't tried so its obviously worth a shot. And the method you copy the files to the cliffs of Dover folder is kind of straightforward...you either copied the files to the right place and overwrote the applicable ones or you didn't. There's no correct/more correct way to do it.
My guess is the reason CloD is crashing has to do with a memory leak, which I'm not sure we can do anything about, or an issue with aircraft LOD models, as I've noticed, along with many others, that crashes seem to happen while approaching/leaving other aircraft...queuing the game to call in the different level-of-detail (LOD) models as they get closer/farther.
My guess is that during your 3 hour test flight, you didn't encounter any aircraft to transition LODs, nor were you online, which is the only place I get crashes. It could also be affected by your low video settings, which could be a factor.
