started with birds of prey on xbox as well with SEE and others.(it was fun) without this console sim, i wouldnt even be aware of the existence of il2 1946 and clod. this game got me into flight sims.so its not everything bad about console games. |
It's definitely worth a play, it's not IL2 and it's not CoD but it looks great, performs well and the Flight models and damage models are adaptations of the IL2 engine. Campaign is quite immersive though it would have been better with proper accents for commentary. It's great for a quick custom dogfight too, AI isn't unreal but it's still fun. Not quite simulation but much more than an arcade sim compared to other efforts. I actually prefer it to RoF but that's probably just my bias to the plane set and period.

About Wings of Prey, I think it first depends very much on what experience you're after, and second what you make it. It has beautiful smooth graphics, very decent flight models (originally licensed from IL2 but since then much improved), and a much improved MP (stability) since the latest update. Engine and systems management is very light, the flying experience can be very good nevertheless if you do not rely on the game's rather limited MP modes (e.g. respawn points are too close). If you decide to get it, perhaps you'd like to check out our Club which flies the game at it's highest difficulty and with special setups: http://forum.gaijinent.com/index.php...the-aces-club/ Below an original recording of a Club game 1 vs 1 in these settings from pilot's perspective. From my experience there was nothing to play in the game apart for the quick mission offline.
MP was a burden or a plea to play with strange individuals gaming the play with strange FM, UFO moves or simply ground scratching flight. As an admin it was not even possible to ban them as an hosting server. But moreover the fact that we had to pay for the patch that could cure all the basics bugs the game have encountered was simply a shame (pls remind that the game was sold at 60$ with map the size of a napkin). It's also the first time that I see a simulator where your plane is repositioned on a reciprocical heading each time your stepping out of your fishbowl . WoP has certainly the best terrains graphics... but tht's all. Add the fact that their devs give earing to all the SPit whiner that kept complaining after the good SPit FM the game had on its release (much like the one of Janes WWII) and you 'd get a good picture of where this game is going : it's AAA and alikes happy world... |
S!
I bought it along with Wings Of Luftwaffe. Only map I disliked was England due the green tint. But if looking past it the terrain was OK. In some places could be seen that they had used modern terrain data as some British airfields had a modern layout with modern plane bunkers ;) But if getting past that, the game was quite fun for a change. For me I liked the Mustang most, even I am not a great fan of Allied Iron..It just looks nice in this game and you could actually fly it so that temps were tihin operating range...and it took a while to cool the engine down after a fight + you could overheat and damage it if pushing too hard..just noticed power was mising and gradually it gave in.. But what struck most that is WAY ahead of CoD: solid no stuttring FPS everywhere, the LOD changes and dot changing to a plane, visibility against ground etc. The planes did not turn to clunky low res LOD blobs at any phase, a Bf109 looked like one up close out to medium/far ranges. No missing / flickering wings etc. Also the contrast, or how it should be said, made the planes a bit better visible against ground as you could spot them from the glint of canopy/wings etc. Anyways..WoP is it's own genre and not comparing it any deeper to CoD which is in a league of it's own. Just another WW2 era flying game to my collection :) |
It's an arcade game in every sense of the meaning.
Here is great representation of the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crBpvqod9qo |

Whatever peoples opinions regards WOP that video has to be the worst example with the fixed cockpit view and does not do it any justice. Visually it's far better than that. Anyone thinking about this title should check later vids with headtracking and POV zoom enabled.
I am curious about the numerous updates since I last fired it up (some are over 4Gb!) so in the process of updating my copy to see all the changes. |
