Best to use BIOS rather than the windows application since this often sets voltages higher than they need to be (more power, less lifespan). Try here for a good starting guide.

Most important settings are the core frequency (clock), multiplier and Vcore voltage. For the 2600k which is a very similar chip I started out by just increasing the clock to 45 (i.e. 4.5 with the multiplier left at stock 100x) and increasing the Vcore to 1.39. You can then increase the multiplier if you want and gradually decrease the Vcore until you are unstable.

Make sure you do some stress tests using prime95 or similar and keep an eye on your temperatures using CPUID HWMonitor or the mboard app. Also, note that the voltages specified in BIOS are often lower than appear in windows (e.g. in CPUID CPU-Z) due to vdroop. The value reported in windows is the 'real' one since this is the loaded voltage.

okay I overclocked using bios but under system it still says 3.3ghz, only in bios can I see, 4200 mhz turbo and 1600mhz memory, is this right? does it only overclock the turbo?

Most utilities arent reporting the Sandybridge temps/speeds etc properly yet .Dont worry youre running at high speed!

CPU-Z will report the correct clocks...just remember these chips downclock and reduce voltages when not stressed. So run something like OCCT or prime 95 and look at CPU-Z while stresstesting with the other tool(s).

Installed ai suite II from cd that came with mobo and it is showing 4200mhz with sim running. IL2 1946/ ROF running great now:grin:

How are the temps looking?

What benefit to CLOD?

I intend to buy the 2500K, as it it recognized on a few sites as the best bang for the buck gaming CPU. But I've read somewhere on this site that overclocking them means not one twit to CLOD. Can someone direct me to some thread or related data that says different? I'm equally concerned to know if CLOD is now optimized to use all four cores efficiently. I've lost track of where the sim is in that area. Thanks for any input that can help me understand.
