Hi there, TeeJay. In fact level bombing in IL2 is very easy and predicteble compared to how it was in real-life. All a matter of having the right approach and training. I consistently kill single tanks from 8000m flying a HE111 or JU88. In real-life, this level of accuracy was and will never be possible using unguided bombs though.

You have pretty accurately described how the automated bomb sights in this game work :D

All you need to do is dial in altitude and speed of your choice and then match them with your plane. Once there, engage auto-level, peek through the sight, make minor adjustments via trim if necessary and wait for the bombs to be released.

I daresay you have never played this game till you have dropped a pair of 4000lbs eggs from 20k ft onto an assembly of taxying enemy bombers :D

You must have good eye sight or its a huge tank from that altitude 8000m, perhaps you mean 8000ft.

JG27_PapaFly 10-29-2010 11:01 AM

:) I mean 8000m. Those are heavily armoured regular size tanks the likes of PIV and T34. You need the right technique.

Check out the top 5 best bomber pilots in the AWII online war: my level bombing students and me are among them (JG7_DzNuts and II/JG7_PanMisio).

When I'm home I shall post a track of a tankkill from 8000m.

BTW we're also recruiting sticks who want to become level bombing pros.
It's hard to get folks interested in bombing, but once they fly a bombrun with us they get addicted and it's hard to get them back into fighters again.

Here you go m8. Two tracks of very high alt precision bombing, flown in a clean 4.09.

HE111 tankkill from 8000m, using SC500 bombs. The tank is actually not even visible from that alt, i had to mark it with white blankets.

This one is fun: it's starting with the drop sequence from a sortie i flew in the AWII online war. It's a JU88 bombrun at 8000m. Anyway, the red fighters were waiting for me at lower alt, so i surprised them, passing above their heads, killing the targets in front of their eyes, and making a safe escape to land. While I landed, one of them even managed to kill himself trying to get me.

As I said, interested pilots can join us and will be taught that stuff.

Nearly all "online war" bomber pilots head to target as low as possible hit and run, land and leave mission to collect their points asap.

Read the server rules m8. You are airborne, you are a target, except if you have nav lights on and want to land. My wingman and I invest in gaining a tactical advantage, and you guys invest nothing in protecting your base. So you die a lot. We're actually on grij to specifically train gunnery. That server offers lots of shooting opportunities per hour, which is quite unusual for a fullreal server.

To Alpha: of course bombing a single tank is nothing I'd do in a campaign, but killing single tanks from 8000m is a nice training tool. Also good for competitions ;)
Honestly, most tankkills i did in the campaign were with levelbombing using SC500 bombs from 3000-4000m of altitude. I clearly see the tanks from there, the attack is less risky, and the accuracy is actually better than what can be achieved with divebombing. Although i like divebombing and have my own optimized divebombing approaches. I did all my strategic bombing in AWII from a minimum of 6000m to avoid AAA and allow my escort/sweep to operate at their optimum altitude. By the time the AAA has woken up from its sleeptime, i have long dropped my bombs and already set heading for home. BTW all blue top bombers in AW operate almost exclusively from high altitude during strategic attacks.

I was posting a long reply

I lost interest and gave up ..............

Have fun :)
