According to Microsoft, they use three game regions (not to be confused with DVD regions):
NTSC: North America and South America (United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil)
NTSC-J: Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan)
PAL: Europe, South Africa, India, Australia, and New Zealand
(In case you didn't know, the terms NTSC and PAL usually refer to TV systems.)
So yes, an Australian XBOX can play the European version of the game, but unfortunately those of us with NTSC-J region XBOXs can't. Which totally sucks, since I haven't been able to find any information about a possible NTSC-J release.
I hated DVD region encoding (and happily hacked my old DVD players to get around it), and think this region encoding for XBOX games is ridiculous as well. PS3 games DON'T use this system -- their games are all region-free.
