In March 2010 (!) UBISOFT released Silent Hunter IV and the support already stopped on December 1st 2010 ! UBISOFT closed down the producing romanian branch office. As the matter of fact the community is dead and we all wasted € 45,00 for a DRM infested, buggy, unfinished piece of s....oftware with a campaing ending in 1943 ! So UBISOFT already screwed one of my favourite games and I HOPE AND PRAY that they will not do the same with the other one. Don't get me wrong, but I'm not that excited ! UBISOFT turned into a greedy company protecting the interests of their shareholders only. They don't give a sh*t for their customers. Remembering UPLAY.......

Anyway, I'm an optimist and will of course support Oleg efforts....4 weeks after the release.

P.S.: Although it is probably a rhetorical question; will there be a dedicated server for IL2 Sturmovik "Cliffs over Dover" ? ;)

You mean Silent Hunter 5, yes I was a big fan of SH3, SH5 came as a big disappointment.

But you can not compare SH5 with IL-2 COD, totally different situation, UBI is not developing IL-2 COD. And the initial IL-2 has a good history of support, not to worry!

People missed it because it wasn't in the original post.Notice the post has been editted.

Excellent news all around.

As for the "renegade pilots" bit, it could either mean pilots from occupied countries in RAF service, or simply AI wingmen that could be either inexperienced and incompetent or blatantly disobedient.

Repeat please!

I mostly fly axis but
a) there's no fw-190 yet and
b) the goodies in the package are very tempting either way
so i'll probably go for the collector's edition.

Also, i like the idea someone posted about making a download available with the installation files, so people who are waiting for their physical disc to arrive in the mail can start playing right away.

For example you could create an account on the title's dedicated website, input your order number from the webshop you bought it from and it would unlock a download option on your account. This would be good for us since we could start flying right away (depending on your internet speed and the server load on their end, you could have the game as early as late evening on the day of release), but also good for them since it would boost sales during the early days when titles are selling for full price.

It would also be an extra incentive to get the collector's edition, while otherwise some people who live in somewhat out of reach places might be put off by the long delivery times and opt for a download version instead.

Overall, excellent news and exciting times ahead, plus a special cheer for including the new multiplayer mode without skimping on the the offline content/campaigns. Like someone mentioned before, even if some fictional missions make an appearance (like the screenshot from igrommir with the damsel in distress), it will only serve to highlight the customizability (is that even a word? lol) and potential of the mission editor.

I would say i can't wait for March but i'm generally a patient guy, so i usually don't get all anxious and excited when there's still a month or more on the deadline clock. In that sesne, what i really can't wait for is this week's Friday updates.

Now that the cat's out of the bag, i suspect we could be seeing a demonstration of some of the special features that we all know are going to be included, but don't know much else about. Graphics are already awesome (CoD on reduced detail and no filters looks as good as modded IL2 on full detail to me, imagine what's going to happen with CoD cranked up to full) and a video of selected sequences will be enough to showcase the sounds too.
Dynamic weather, AI complexity, in-game briefings, the built-in support for 3rd party content/community mods without compromising online gameplay, systems and engine management, radio communications and vectoring by ground radar controllers, etc, that's stuff we all know have been planned features for a very long time but don't know how exactly will work in the sim. ;)

clickable cockpit?

It's been confirmed as a control option at an earlier date. There have also been screeenshots in the development updates showing tooltips on various buttons and levers, much like it works in FSX. That doesn't mean we'll have to click buttons in combat with the mouse though. I guess we will be able to map whatever we want to keyboard, stick or HOTAS and/or click on them in the cockpits, whichever way we like. In that case, i'll keep guns, gear, flaps, engine controls, etc mapped to my keyboard and stick like i have them in IL2, then use the mouse for secondary controls that are not time critical or only get used once or twice during the course of the flight (rotating the compass marker to a new heading, choosing a fuel tank or turning on the landing light switch for example).

I guess this goes hand in hand with the new view system that's been talked about and recently we saw a screenshot of. Oleg Maddox said there will be two view systems, one similar to IL2 and a new one. There was one pic in a recent update showing a pop-up camera menu, so i guess this is it.

That would be cool for movie makers. Instead of cycling through the cameras you just right click and select the aircraft you want to view, then probably save the track again with the view transitions you want and finally (this last one was also a confirmed feature in one update), export it directly to video format without having to use external video capture software.

Today's news are good news, but, respectfully, few news.

News:
a.1) Released date March 2011
a.2) Publisher: Ubi (and a embryo of webpage)
a.3) Collector's Edition with a historical Spitfire Manual/Document
a.4) Renegade pilots flying for the Luftwaffe (Awesome ! )

Nothing more.

Already known (just following Oleg's good old Friday updates):

b.1) Planeset (not fully explained in release news)
b.2) Map printed in a cloth : this was already leaked/announced by Luthier weeks ago even asking to the community for historical background
b.3) Part of the footage already shown in Igromir show (to the fortunate spectators) or to the Internet in Youtube, via Iphones, etc.
b.4) DM and FM much more accurate
b.5) Better AI
b.6) Much more accurate environment (wheater etc)
b.7) Higly detailed ground objects
b.8 ) Scenario (obvious)
b.9) Graphic Software (DX11)
b10) Name (for somebody :) )
b11) RAF and Luftwaffe (and italian CAI) careers (Thanks, Luthier, for the correction)

Unknown yet (some very important)

c.1) Specs
c.2) DRM or antipiracy software
c.3) Cover
c.4) Price
c.5) Sale of Normal Edition (Steam? , direct download like ROF?
c.6) Activation mode (Internet connection full time even off-line? only 1 activation when purchased?
c.7) Worldwide release or different dates for countries
c.8 ) Forum?
c.9) Full Webpage
c10) Merchadising (Wall Papers, posters)

...and probably many other.

And finally, the quality of the video is, in my humble opinion, poor to show the great new capabilities of this Sim. Taken from old footage from low-end computer, short, and not transmitting the potential of this Sim. Just it looked like another Air Simulator more.

IMHO, this new Sim deserved a better Marketing campaign, better video, a better webpage, a Forum started, and a much more intense media speech to explain to newcomers what it really will be, and to spread illusion between us ,the old foxes that are expecting this great Sim for years.

Sorry, it is my feeling, ilusion and disappointment a the same time. It seems like if , suddenly, they were in a hurry. Why? Leaks?

I repeat, respectfully to all, specially to 1C Management and Dev Team.

PD: Of course, no doubt I'll purchase the Collector's Edition...

You'd be better sending a donation to the development team. But there will be a DRM, and you should be able to understand why (although hopefully not one that requires a connection every day, or that installs dodgy software on your PC).

Come on Major, get with it - it wasn't clearly stated - it wasn't stated at all, until after everyone spotted the mistake.

Yes it does deserve all that, but so what? The main thing is there's been an official announcement that it's due to be released in March. That's fantastic news. The fact is that it's now close enough that we don't have to worry much about system specs because a) we'll probably find out shortly, and b) we'll definitely know when it's out. You mention price - there is a pre-order price on the ubi website. It's just been announced today, you don't need to know everything from day one, and as you pointed out, we've already been told much of it before now - that's a good thing, not a bad thing that the news isn't new today.
