So, maybe to get the topic back on track - news is that the technical problems Caspar mentioned have been solved and we can work again.

That's good news! Thanks for the update JtD.

This 4.12 patch release started to seem like a...joke! Or something like hide'n seek!
DT's PR department ....sucks! :)

Buster_Dee 04-14-2013 02:23 PM

PR takes manpower. Better to put out smoldering hadware and get back to work.

Exactly.

How many times do people need to be reminded that DT are all volunteers that do this in their spare time.

They are not a professional, paid to do it, and only it, development studio.

They have jobs and family responsibilities, and have to fit in working on the sim when the grind of real life permits.

"Fastidiously" is an adverb. Considering the structure of your sentence, I think you want "fastidious".

(I just proved your point too, btw).

Do the comments of one person really carry that much weight? If anything, silly comments like the one earlier should probably just be ignored, as they do not reflect the attitude of this community.

Vaporware is where the audience is concerned that the product doesn't actually exist outside of a couple of mocked up screen shots and a lot of PR banter.

Instead there are real screen shots (and videos) and not a lot of PR banter. Juts folks busy working hard on something just a little bit complicated. This isn't TD's first rodeo... it'll be fine.

Yep.. and usually not actually developed beyond the early stages. It's where the advertising campaign announces a product far too early into its development where almost nothing exists and the product wallows in development obscurity for many years before quietly fizzling out.

Duke Nukem Forever was in that state for something like 12 or 13 years...

Anyways... back on the subject of 4.12. Why would you think that 4.12 is going to be somehow cancelled?

stugumby 04-15-2013 04:15 AM

Just curious: how much time spent enjoying the sim?

For the hard working members of team diadelos, how much time do you spend actually flying and enjoying vs making/tweaking etc. is more of your enjoy time on or off line, and do any of you build missions or campaigns/skin etc??
I myself used to make lots of off line campaigns and single missions until work schedule changed, now im lucky to get 4 hours a week online and 2-3 offline.

Why are you preoccupying yourself with thoughts of v4.12 being "vaporware" or getting cancelled? We've all been waiting anxiously for it, but there's no need to think fatalistically about the situation. It's at too far a stage in development, and it's release is imminent, so there's virtually no reason to think that it will suddenly be cancelled at this point.

Pursuivant 04-15-2013 06:12 PM

It's only "vaporware" in that oncoming thunderclouds are "vapor." It's only been about 2 weeks since the "read-me" file was released.

Buster_Dee 04-15-2013 09:50 PM

I hardly ever fly. I'm too busy making vaporware.

To be honest, doing stuff for this sim interests me more than flying it. I was the same way with hobby racing: build a motor, then wonder who will drive it. Never seemed to occur to me that I could. One day I DID drive one, and I learned why I'd rather build; I like it better when someone else is scared....

Maybe I like it better when someone else is shot down.

Sims are a niche product... but IL-2 is far from dead. Go on HyperLobby any weekend and see the numbers of servers and COOPs running. Plus all of the folks who just play single player and don't always speak up a whole lot.

You may or may not know but IL-2s current development is done by Team Daidalos - a collection of volunteers with the knowledge and talents required to work on something as complex as this is. The only impediment is really time and interest...there isn't a yearly budget that will run out. Sometimes patches take a while but there is a ton of love being poured into this and there's enough content in the pipe to span into 4.13... surely.

I don't know what the team's priorities are as soon as 4.12 is wrapped up (there's just too much we still want to do). I'm a model-texture guy only, so I can only say that I'll fix whatever they don't like as soon as it comes up. Guse, on the other hand, is more than just a model-texture guy, and he has laid down a lot of the ground work that the programmers would otherwise have to do when attention turns to this model. Put plainly, Guse has done eveything possible to have it ready for the programmers to give it a heartbeat. Sorry I can't say anything more helpful. Please believe that the delays don't mean trouble; they just mean our enthusiasm is making a lot of work for us again. Even as I drool over having my 1st cockpit in the game, I am up to my eyeballs in another project for the team (and you all of course). That one I can't talk about yet, because projects have to survive some serious teething before we can entertain some cautious hope that they will live.

Any hope for tropical filters on the hurricanes?? Those seem to my untrained eye to be a simple add on, however im not mod qualified to speak other than a request for them in the future.

There are two games that I bought when the first came out and they have always been been on any computer I have owned.

One is Steel Panthers by SSI in 1995, Through SP:WW2 with Camo Workshop accepting the rights (like Daidalos) to upgrade in 1999 and the current Win SP:WW2 from 2005 and up V6.0.

The other of course is Il-2 from 2001, Forgotten Battles 2003, Aces 2004, abd 1946 in 2007 to now happily waiting patiently (kinda :-P) for V4.12 from the amazing Daidalos. I only play off line and sometimes I don't play at all and use the QMB and FMB to set up and just watch the action unfold.

BTW will there be plans to add to the built in dynamic pilot careers to take up all the added aircraft from the last few patches.

You shouldn't worry about that .. and frankly even if it were cancelled today and there was no more support forthcoming for IL2 .. what we have would be monumental and something that will probably never be achieved again in the genre.

Even in it's heyday there were still a lot of folks who had no idea about IL2. Hyperlobby is not a good indicator though.. at one time Hyperlobby would be packed in the thousands.. Now it is rare that it goes over the 500 mark.. but like IF said... this sim is far from being dead or even near death.. In fact it is probably the only 12 year old flight sim still getting new users almost daily..

Numbers are no more the ones we got used some years ago, but IL2 is still the combat flight simulation with more players online than any other.
CLOD has only one server with high numbers (ATAG) ad it absorbs almost the entire CLOD online community.
ROF doesn't come close to IL2 numbers online.
My opinion is that IL2 is not getting so many new players (I think that if someone approaches sims now will be more attracted by latest generation graphics...IL2 needs to be tasted in the deep...not so many newbies have the patience or the will to do that as a first approach), but that it is holding his community with amazing results.

Hello,

We actually play IL-2 multiplayer relatively frequently among my group of friends. Sometimes its 2 or 3 of us over the internet (with HSFX sometimes, stock 4.11.1 other times) and other times it is at LAN parties with 6-10 players. To simplify things and to keep IL-2 capable of running on everyone's machines we pretty much stick to stock 4.11.1 at LAN parties. Everyone can join and we've got it set so that noobs are having fun from the get-go. I'd say we've got a pretty healthy IL-2 community building here (plus by 4 year old son is a huge fan). DCS is too difficult for most casual users, Rise of Flight can be made easy but has demanding system requirements and Cliffs of Dover is a broken mess. With all that in mind, IL-2 strikes the perfect balance for LANing and internet coop. Will Asura's DGen improvements be carried over to the coop campaign? Coop campaigns would rule.

Cheers,

Fafnir_6

Multiplayer campaigns are using the NGen file. Asura got the NGen source code from Starshoy, but he doesn't have the time to work on it, improving DGen is already more than enough work. But if Team Daidalos or anyone else with programming knowledge likes to work on NGen, they can get the code.

Just like to inform you, that our development forum, which already had repeatly some problems in the last months, now was hacked and is down. I don't know the status, as I don't have direct contact with the forum hoster. I hope, our discussions were backed up, many information in there would be lost.

However, files are save elsewhere - its 'only' the communication and organisation, that is now paused and the patch release got another heavy delay. :(

I'm sorry!

i hope that everything will be alright soon

Bearcat 04-20-2013 05:03 PM

Wow...........

Malkav 04-20-2013 05:17 PM

Hold on, TD! Stay the course..

Treetop64 04-20-2013 09:24 PM

When it rains, it pours.

At least the impression is that we are now in the 59th minute of the 11th hour with v4.12, at least before this latest drama occurred. Good luck in resolving the issue, DT.

They are talking about the internal dev forums.

JtD 04-21-2013 05:34 AM

Next time you find hidden URL's, just report the post please. There have been hundreds of posting like this in the past, there'll likely be hundreds in the future.

what internal dev forums what do you mean by internal

EJGr.Ost_Caspar 04-21-2013 04:38 PM

Thats the place, where we silently discuss and produce the things, that we want to put into our patches. We are an international team, with members spread all around the world. The forum is the only way to come together.

It's a private forum that only the members of DT can see or have access to (unless hacked, like this week :( )

EJGr.Ost_Caspar 04-21-2013 10:58 PM

For me it feels like it's been winter since October. With some scattered days of sun. But it makes sense that it will get warmer soon... just not yet. :-P

Some folks do things "just because". They don't have to have a reason.

I know, but that's from earlier times - nowadays it's usually for some (new?) kind of (monetary) profit, hence my question.
Sorry for the OffTopic, just professionally curious.

TD, can you please just release 4.12 as is..anything wrong can be fixed in a hotfix patch

I only care about the custom sounds. I refuse to download a 6gigabyte hsfx file just for better sounds

beazil 04-22-2013 11:43 PM

*Sigh*
Bad news indeed Team D. Glad to hear that recovery is possible, but sorry to hear that you have lost so much work (at least, that's how it sounds). Please keep up the great work, and sorry that you had to deal with that additional adversity.

Agreed... some people just like to watch things burn. Real life. Digitally. Whatever.

Hope to see things restored sooner than later.

Solution :
1. Go back in time with a time machine.
2. Kill the first guy who hacked something
3. Saying to everybody that when you hack, you will die
4. Secure website to be "hacker proof"
5. Return in 2013
6. Enjoy internet and video game!!!
