The single player on this game is GREAT! but whats the point of having all these planes if all you can use in MP is the older planes to stand a chance of winning a match. Correct me if i'm wrong but a newer plane should wipe the floor of the older planes otherwise why did they even develop them and not stick with Bi-planes

Basically true but not always :-P. Some of the advantages of the newer planes came as tradeoffs. Heavier armament resulted in reduced manoeverability as an example.

It's only in arcade mode that planes like the I-153 and I-16 are dangerous, step up to realistic and they will give you no problems. Don't get into a turning fight with them, climb away from them then and once they are 1.5km behind you then turn and come back at them.

Theories are best tested in practice. If you play online on the 360 this weekend we can give it a try using different versions of the Me-109 for example.

I was hoping for sim mode tbh - but we can meet half way and play realistic ;) I'm not sure if I'm good, never played online so far except BF1943, but that doesn't count.

Hmmm, not necessarily. Typically what you'll see is that the earlier variants of a particular fighter were strictly engineered for air to air combat. Then later on they were adapted for ground attack roles through the addition of heavier armament, armor, weapons hardpoints, etc.
Through the process of making them more of an all-around weapon, they limited their effectiveness in the very specialized role for which they were originally designed.

Because, the more advanced planes are faster, and when you increase the speed of a plane (any plane) it loses the advantage of turning and rolling. If you were to take on a I-16 Rata or I-153 Chaika in combat, they would out roll and maneuver you because (not theory since it's been tested and proven) they would be able to roll and turn into a dive quicker. Why? Simple, their not as fast as the later planes, and when you increase speed, you have to go into a more broad turn or dive because you'll either stall or tear your wings off. Sometimes even black out? Speed isn't everything, especially in maneuverability where the slower you are, the quicker you can turn etc.
