Just been testing out my new aviator flightstick for the 360, and i have to say that im pretty horrified by the deadzone.

I have already lowered the sensitivity settings, and whilst this has helped control, it has not touched the deadzone issue.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to combat this, or is it just a case of grin and bearing it?

Ps. Please dont suggest the ace edge, as my girlfriend would cut my plums off if i spent THAT much on a flightstick:-P

I bet she would spend that much money on a dress or something!

Deadzone is alright, as far as i know not much to do about it.
There are some mods for the stick you can aply to make it feel a bit better :)

Yeah, talk about double standards!

So the mods you can apply are just for comfort and dont effect the actual control of the stick?

well some guys changed the button placement,
And using those wraps around the spring losens tension on the stick.

But nothing to decrease deadzone i think.

Is the deadzone that bad for the AV8R? I have the Ace Edge and its has one to but its tolerable. Id like to pick on up for a friend, but I dont want him to be worse off than if he was just using a regular controller.

Oh well, guess i'll just have to make do. Cheers anyway.

I don't really notice any deadzone with the AV8R on the ps3.

Well its just my opinion but i think its pretty bad. The stick controls well overall but when it comes to minute adjustments it becomes quite a pain.

For instance, when trying to shoot a bomber, i zoom in and try to aim for the engines, apply pressure to the stick and nothing happens, then i add slightly more pressure and the input kicks in and jerks my aim.

I think it will take a lot of getting used to, but i still find it preferable (and more fun) than a game pad.

Ace Edge or Hori atleast has less deadzone then AV8R

No it doesn't.

Neither controller has an actual deadzone.

The game itself has a deadzone, programmed in there by the developer.

To see that I am talking about, go plug the aviator into the PC. You could then go into the controller settings, and see that there is no deadzone at all in the actual hardware.

I can live with the dead zone on my av8r. What is hard to get used to is the binary response of the rudder. I haven´t checked if the controller has the same behaviour, but with the aviator the rudder is really all or nothing. Really annoying when aiming.

Yes, but yet by control has the Hori less deadzone, i dont know how or why, i dont even care.
I have both sticks and i can tell you Hori has less deadzone.

Not saying you are not right, i indeed checked my AV8R on pc and couldent find a deadzone.

Forgive my ignorance, but why would the devs programme in a deadzone?

Perhaps because it makes sense to have a deadzone on a contoller where the movements ar much smaller. Maybe they havent changed this for the aviator, but have changed it for the trustmaster?

Ah, i get it now.

I'm thinking that maybe when the devs were programming flight stick compatibility, the hori series was the chosen stick and thus the minimal deadzone on them.

... although, my theory could be complete crap :-P

seconded, I have thrustmaster and has same problems as above. Also, in sim mode you can still see outside plane, fly level with an FW on your tail and it takes forever for him to shoot you down. I hope they fix these problems.

I am concerned about the rudder control as I was planning on picking up an AV8R this afternoon. Am I right in assuming that rudder control on the av8r is performed by twisting the stick? You would think that motion would have a variable effect. I am a noob but I played for the first time last night and although I loved the game immensely, I could not stop from accidentally screwing with the throttle. I am a huge fan of COD so maybe my hands are having a hard time with the controls. Should I get the AV8R? Please help.

Yes, you twist the stick for rudder. I haven´t tried the hotas, but i guess it´s a better stick where the rudder is attached to the throttle. I bought the av8r because i couldn´t find the hotas. I´m happy enough with the av8or though.

Thanks for the reply. I'll pick up an AV8R today. One more question if you dont mind; Do you have to configure the buttons or does it work out of the box?

It works good out of the box. But I did a rudder comparison just now between the controller and the stick and stand by my previous observation that the rudder on the av8or is not smooth at all. The controller has a much smoother rudder control. Perhaps you should try to test both the trustmaster and the aviator? Or perhaps its just me or my stick, i dont know?

Here is the original thread about the AV8R mods that people have performed:

http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=8533

For me personally the zip-tie mod made a huge difference in my ability to aim. As for the twist rudder feature on the AV8R; it can be a bit twitchy dependent on your sensitivity settings, but it's not impossible to play with. The seperate throttle control on the AV8R alone trumps many of the minor faults people typically find with the stick.

in my experience I find the twist rudder really intuitive and good for a snap adjustment on aiming( i've also found a "rudder straff" across a bombers wing line is quite effective)...anything fiddly involving hanging around and you are going to be a sitting duck. Get yourself lined up on approach/Get your shot in and go...dawddle and you're down!

just sayin...
