Hi all,
are there any IL2 players that use this new little radeon? I don't care basically if i get geforce or radeon, but i can get this for aprox 85€ and 8800GT for 60-70€ (that one used). Now, i'm sure that 4770 beats 8800GT on most fronts but for IL2, no tests. So, does any one have some experience with this card? In the past i used everything for IL2, from geforce to current radeon. I noticed no big differences. But still, i'd like to hear opinions, since IL2 had been the only game on my PC for past few years.
Thaks.

Both will quite happly run IL2 at maximum settings at 1920x1200 resolution. The best bet is to look for bench marks on OpenGL games for both cards, since IL2 is OGL.

I've got a Radeon (not that one), and it seems to be the case that Ati's drivers are getting worse in respect of support for Open GL. Sadly, for me, it looks as if it might be nVidia for IL*2/SoW in the future, unless Oleg changes his mind about Open GL being the way forward.

Got good deal for GTS250 512MB geforce and ordered that one. I know it's repacked G92 core but hey, IL2 is the only thing when it comes to "games" on my PC... better play it safe this time :) It would be better if i got 1GB version but, i'm cheap when it comes to PC :)

I have a GTS 250...its a fantastic card. Yes its a repackaged G92 BUT...it has reduced power requirements and it runs very cool and still gets fantastic frame rates. I think you'll be pleased.

Zuti,
I have a Gigabyte Radeon HD4870x2 card switched to OpenGL. It certainly beats my old geforce 8800GT card on just about every front. I still get some 'colour flashing' from tracer fire and also problems with ground features on some of the later maps - this is a driver issue, which I hope Oleg will try to fix, if he has the time?
Generally the cards detail rendition is far superior and the frame rate very, very high.
I remember reading somewhere that Oleg did recommend geforce cards, though I think ATI are now producing much better cards that seem to handle IL2 graphics very well.

I agree it's not a problem of Radeon cards being underpowered for the money.

That is what I am talking about. The colour flashing I could live with, though it certainly isn't correct, the lilac shadows on the undersides of the planes annoyed me, these are artefacts of defective code (not 1c company code). The DX version of IL*2 doesn't have that, but there are other issues (the disappearing plane labels (yeah, I know people here think using them is lame :-P) in DX mode make me think about going back to Open GL).

I agree, it is a driver issue. :(
Ati write the Radeon drivers, not Oleg, there's not much Oleg can do about the Radeon drivers. I do hope that Ati can be persuded that it's worth sorting out, apparently there are very few recent Open GL games out there, and even fewer new ones are going to be made, so it doesn't seem to Ati to be a big deal. :(
