I need to get rid of a troop in the garrison so that I have more room, but when I click on the "dismiss" button for that troop, nothing happens. What's wrong?

You need to dismiss the troop from your own ranks, you can't dismiss something in the garrison. So move it to your army first and there dismiss it. Annoying, but there you are.
