View Full Version : It will be possible to have Vietnam jets in the future?

It seems that Oleg will be delivering a set of official tools for third-party developers.
I was wondering if the engine will suport jets from the sixties and early missiles (AIM9B, AIM7) as long as radar.
I know that´s too early , but I have the impression that SOW will be much more that a BOB sim from the flight sim community , but a powerful engine that will allow all our sim dreams...

Well I sure hope you're right! Oleg's clan already has a Korean air war sim on the back burner, with some screen shots made available already. But there is some appeal in flying a Thud loaded with bombs into pack route 6, climbing to the "perch" before tipping over into a 45 degree dive over Haiphong Harbor rail yards, diving through flak and sweating Sam launches. Then there's the fun of pulling off target, and trying to outrun MiGs downlow, using the burner, and sweating out fuel to make it to the tanker. (Be nice to have refueling to and from the target). Let the escorts get the glory. The mud movers make the history! :D

You can do this right now in Wings Over Vietnam.But doing this in Oleg´s or Luthier´s standart will be great.(with all my respect to other developers)

I own Wings over Vietnam, but never really warmed to it. Don't know why, but I just didn't.

Perhaps a good idea in the long run. But since radar and ir missiles are completely different ballgame it would be nice to see non-missile extensions of SoW:BoB or IL-2 FB first.

Better to deal with the fifties and sixties first, early jets and old-fashioned gun kills are so much more fun than ir and radar fights, but that's personal :)
So after doing Korea, Suez '56 and '67's Six-Day war, the Paki-Indian airwar would be great. And how about an 'What-If?' NATO-Warshaw pact airwar set before the Vietnam jet war kicked in? After all, we got the 'What-If?' Luftwaffe '46 extension already ..

Oleg has already answered this confirming that he saw the sim as both forward and backward compatable. You could do a WW1 sim and a modern sim.
With this statement one would assume modern weaponary could be simulated.
unfortuantly he wrote this in the now defunct Oleg answers thread.

I can tell you that we are thinking about such feature. Howevere I think that MG will move forward with WWII, but Korea - also will move forward to the jet era. This is one of variants in future. Another - WWI. But we at MG will stay long enough with WWII. At least I hope so.

This thread reminded me to reinstall that buggy as Sheite Thirdwire Ripoff. $40 I wasted on that POS and would lock up every single time after the first few minutes. Even on the latest PC build. Shame Shame Shame on ThirdWire, and on me for giving the software a second chance!

Never even got to work the clickable checklists and cockpits. DAMN they spent all that time farting around with that and should have spent that time on something worthwhile.

I've posted before about the complexity of a Vietnam era sim.

The big stumbling block IMHO is the necessity of having a functional AI "Man In Back". (Radar Intercept Officer). Very difficult to do, and an absolutely crucial position. The pilot would very quickly become task saturated in the high speed environment of Vietnam era engagements, if left to himself in the very complex USAF fighters of the period. Remember, they were reaching for 1980's weapons performance, with 1960's era computers.

Toss in the mission profile of a Wild Weasel F-105 and you have a nightmarish scenario for a single pilot.

Of course you could not do this and concentrate on single seaters only, but then you would be missing some of the best missions of that period.

AI back seater should be easy to do, lets face it Total Air War simulated an entire AWAC...
I think the complexities are over estimated.
Switching between the two roles should be the goal with the Ai able to handle things as you rotate roles.
Not much fun being a pilot in the F4 when the backseater tracks, locks the target with radar (BVR) and you fly as chauffer.
When you get close it is again not much fun as a backseater as the pilot now uses his sidewinders... Mix and match would be much better than flying as a dedicated backseater or pilot.
As for game mechanics I am sure they are within the game engines grasp as radar is alreadly simulated
