I entered Lucky James' cave. However, I only have 1 dwarf offering me roast rats. I heard I can get about 5 in the cave. Do I have to defeat Lucky James first? Thanks.

no, you just have to keep asking dwarves, eventually they will offer you one. And I've gotten as many as seven there.
