I think I discovered the perfect tactic for no losses ever and no army-
For this you have to have high intellect, level 2 higher magic, level 3 chaos, invisibility and demon portal spells.

In your army have only one unit with high health and initiative. For enemy armies with a character(only if this character has high intellect) this unit should be Giant and for armies without character a couple of horsemen will do. Of course, in situation where you have enemy army with no character you can have any kind of unit because it will then be completely ignored by invisibility, but it needs a high initiative for you to cast invisibility spell first before your unit gets attacked.

So, when you first start combat cast invisibility spell on the unit making it completely ignored by the enemy(except for enemy armies which have characters, unit only gets attacked by it's spells). And then cast demon portal spell.

In two turns you have 3 demon portals opening, if you have high intellect, above 25, you get demons worth more than 7000 leadership of levels 3-5. This army is far more powerful than anything you can have and completely expendable, not to mention very resistant with high health, you usually get 80 Cerberus(attacks 3 stacks simultaneously), 30 Demons(always retaliates) and 6 Archidemons(better than dragons) at this level.

This tactic is especially good for upgrading items, finally you can stop worrying about eliminating gremlins and enemy army at the same time. Just cast demon portals next to them and demons will take care of them, even if they have huge tower health and huge armies.

Also because you have no army except just one unit you always get invincible description, I'm not sure put this might effect your rage spirits get more experience.

I currently have a mage with over 20 defence, but I don't think it makes any difference, demons of 3-5 levels are really tough and powerful.

P.S.
I can't play King's Bounty anymore because Upper Hadar is broken, so sadly I'm finished with King's Bounty: The Legend, this demon portal is just a spell I stumbled upon on second playthrough trying to possibly evade this game-breaking Upper Hadar bug...since everything in this game is randomly reconfigured each time probably most of you will never acquire this spell.

Another version of this tactic is using invisibility+kamikaze spells, I finished Pago the giant in tournament that way, my army consisted of only 3 horsemen.

P.S.
Notice that there is a gradation in nominal initiative, for example both cannoneers and horsemen have initiative of 6 in the unit description, but horsemen have actually higher initiative than cannoneers.
