I made this video to help new pilots learn how to improve their shooting.

It is also an experiment to see how you all take to animated characters in an IL2 movie. The characters are made with Moviestorm which does not yet have accurate WW2 figures, so please allow for the approximations. If this is well received then I and others may have a go at modding to get it right.

Please let me know what you think and if this technique could be used for more serious stories!

BLIP.TV (http://weebitfilms.blogspot.com/2008/10/bag-hun-moviestorm-and-il2-experiment.html) High quality streaming version.

MISSION4TODAY.COM (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3543) or FILEFRONT.COM (http://files.filefront.com/Bag+the+Hunzip/;12102763;/fileinfo.html) Download the WMV version.

FILEFRONT XVID Version (http://files.filefront.com/Bag+the+Hun+xvidzip/;12103254;/fileinfo.html) The highest quality version is which requires the XVID or DIVX codec and may cause flickering in WMP, in which case use the free VLC player.

EDIT:

For those who want more time to study the slides, download Bag The Hun (http://files.filefront.com/Bag+the+Hunpdf/;12111763;/fileinfo.html) or the German equivalent Horrido Des Jaegers Schiessfibel (http://files.filefront.com/Horrido+Des+Jaegers+Schielpdf/;12111425;/fileinfo.html)

Here are three of the exercises for quick study, with the three answers pages at the bottom:

Cheers Joe, downloading now - I'm sure it will be just as valuable to the veterans of this series as well as the new chaps :)

EDIT:

Brilliant work Joe!

Much more than what I was expecting; a superb movie to watch and enjoy just as much as to be used as a training film.

I am glad , by a few posters the historical insults for the germans survived.

Thanks all and please keep the comments coming about the Moviestorm characters. Yes, they are a bit jerky and I will have to learn how to get the best from the program, but will they work in a serious story or will you be distracted? There are already many excellent Moviestorm machinima movies that work, but none in the flight sim community.

I also appreciate that the slides could have been up for longer, but I tried to make this entertaining as well as educational so the slide time was better kept to a minimum and music was added to give it more emotion. I hoped that anyone wanting to learn more would pause the video or download the book.

I have edited my first post to provide links and also a few of the exercise pages from the book for practice.

I welcome frank criticism so I know what will work for future movies!

I'll have to scan and post up the flight and combat training diagrams from the "Red Baron" game book..... it is quite a few pages so considerably better advice than the "Tip to help to help your opponent shoot you down quickly and easily" paragraphs in the BOP manual. The latter seemingly taken directly from Soviet fighter pilot training manuals for those flying over Finland during the "Winter War" and "Continuation War". Soviet fighter training was as legendarily poor as the Fin's was good.

The RB game book includes "Bolcke's Dicta" which is still taught to fighter pilots globally today.

That would be great! This video was absolutely fantastic! But I would also like some kind of training manual that is more extensive! Would love to have the Red Barron manual. Does anybody else know of any good training sites/books/videos.....I don't even mind paying for something. I'm new to IL2 and have been reading about dogfighting more than I have been playing the game...which is sad..lol. But I have yet to find any type of training manual that is solid. I don't need anything on flight since I'm already a pilot...just want a good fighting training aid. Thanks!

Pretty cool actually, a lot of online sqn's could use this for manditory combat training as well as for would be armorers for bore sighting one's guns. Not everyone is comfortable trying to shoot down an AC from the default setting of 500 yds eh. and the further "out" , the less energy the projectile has ....
thanks again !!

Lolz, watching this vid and a few others I notice the graphics are really good looking, almost real life...is that b/c of the really high graphic settings and a wonderful graphic card or is it some editing software to make it look that good? Also, how do u hit w/ the 20mm cannons on the spit better? They seem to drop off like right after coming out of the barrel unlike 50s that fly quite straight for awhile. Also, they like to jerk the plane around w/ recoil so they miss alot...

Ta.

KnightFandragon, it's all to do with choosing the best lighting, skins and maps, and then using the best camera angles to show off the best of IL2 and hide the worst.

Then a few filters in post production to remove thr "gamey" look. Things like reducing the saturation, adjusting brightness/contrast, colour balance. Sometimes even a little gaussian blur can make it look more real.

As for the shooting, you should see my attempts flying online, lol. Doing it in the movies is easy :) I'll leave advice on the finer details to the aces, and probably in another thread.
