I guess he is still weak although I didn't try fighting not to lose too much of my army, how many levels/qwhat other things should I change/improve before I go there? I still didn't clear Kordar (demon vilage etc)
thanks

A Mage depends on magic to deal with enemies. You should have saved your runes for higher magic, and level 3 distortion and chaos magic. You need to get more intelligence and mana boosting artifacts. Also, get some Emerald Dragons if you can.

I was trying to get the spell which transforms priests to inquisitors so I spent too many of the runes but I'll upgrade spells as soon as possible, mana usually isn't a problem and I buy any useful artifacts whenever I get a chance to do so :)
thanks for the tips! where do I get those dragons by the way?

The skill that transforms priests into inquisitors is not worth it. Instead, get the sacrifice spell, it's a chaos spell lets you sacrifice units from one group of creatures to increase the numbers of another group, so you can sacrifice a bunch of peasants to increase the numbers of powerful creatures like dragons or giants.

Creatures are randomly generated but there's a good chance of finding Emerald Dragons in a shop on one of the islands around Elven lands.

I got sacrifice :) wish I knew about the skill not being worth, I discovered this forum only yesterday and there's no shrine to unlearn stuff as in HOMM V :(
now I am stuck with my bad choices it seems

ok, lol, I got another tactic.. I lifted up my intellect a bit (its 20 now) and got instantly replenishable units (plenty of them to hire), I can still beat Kordar effortlessly so I'll pick up some more runes and xp there!

I'm suprised you're not having mana problems. If you return the crown to the Griffin King you could end up a a nice painting after the 2nd quest.

Spell power takes a big jump after every 7 points of Intellect so get it to 21 as soon as possible.

I really like starting games of King's Bounty but if you don't you'll be able to get through it. However I think I would choose to restart and not waste ruins on Inquisition.

intellect is 21 now, I am almost done with kordar (lvl17, halfway to 18), I just found summon phoenix spell, hope I'll make the right choice which troops to use in Elven lands!
if I found forum earlier I wouldn't make such mistakes but now I really played way too much to start all over, I am playing too much instead of studying for exam anyway

Splattergirl, the intellect levels good more Mage Worthy now :)

Three pieces of Advice:

- Change the insignia! Unless my eyes are deceiving me, thats the insignia you would have picked up during the tutorial (leadership +20 only)! There is WAY better stuff out there.

- Get your chaos level to 3, and start casting level 3 chaos spells. The mage shines there :)

- Get Higher magic! Another mage necessity! It lets you cast two spells on turn 1 at level 1.

You'll start feeling the mana crunch soon as well :D. 79 is pretty low for a mage

Level 1 phoenix is pretty worthless there. Even level 3 might be too weak. While phoenix can be great on pirate islands it quickly loses usefulness.

the really weird thing is I found where to hire cyclops only after taking town with demon army and I got phoenix scroll only on dwarven territory's small island :S
chaos spells got to lvl3 like 15min after second screenshot so at least that bit is done ;)
hopefully I'll find some nice mana gear at the Elves soon.. pity phoenix is useless, it was such a strong unit in HOMM V :(

okay here's a new screenshot, army is crap but I hope hero's a bit better...
playing zone - the great forest (partially cleared)
the regalia really did suck, I didn't notice it wasn't something different than artifact until you mentioned, I still don't even know what regalia means hehe :)
this one isn't that much improvement magewise but I'll cope with it until I find something better...
runes really became much more common so I got chaos and distortion to 3 and also 1 in higher magic, I got inquisitor skill also since I spent so much on it already, maybe I'll play the game again if I get to finish this one :)
so, here it is:

I see two of your units on bad morale (the sad faces on the elves and the other unit). This is because of the mix you have I think. I'd ditch either the elves or the canoneers and get another 'beast' unit or another unit of the type you retain.

Throw away cannoneers for second elven archers :)

thanks for the advice! which unit would you propose specifically? evil beholders were ok but there were few left to hire for example...

latest version, a bit more mana, int and rage (I can finally use the best Reaper ability), second rank of higher magic...
unable to beat necro castle, didn't find anywhere spells like Fire Rain :(
also, no black or red dragons I could hire, one egg with one dragon means nothing :(

No place to hire Elven Hunters? Because Dwarfs and Elves don't like each other (morale penalty).

Something to be aware next time you play:

Looking your first screenshot, you made a big mistake of leveling Destroyer before even taking 3rd level of Destruction. You should've gone for that even before Archmage talent.

yes I did, I didn't even understand about upgrading spells since friend told me this was very similar to Heroes and there you don't upgrade spells but whole magic schools when you level up.. if I remember correctly...
I really hope I will be able to finish the game with this character, thankfully I play on normal and not on some harder difficulty :)

and yes... I can't seem to find elven hunters anywhere!!!
