This may be a stupid question.

I downloaded this game direct2drive and didnt get a manual, so heres my question. In the tutorial, where your killing dragons, necromancers, etc. your hero takes part in the action. Now I have left the keep and when I fight, my hero no longer shows up in my army. Is this normal? or am I forgetting to add him somehow? Thanks for the help guys.

The hero does not take part in the action. Is the unit you're referring to the one on a horse? If yes, then they're just normal human units you can recruit later on.
