It's great that we now have an open interface for sounds in 4.12. However, without a complete list of all the sample filenames in the game, how is the average player expected to take advantage of this feature? Does anyone have a list of all the sample filenames in 4.12?

Even better would be an actual copy of all the default .wav soundfiles. This is really the only way we can review/edit/replace the default sounds.

So how about it TD? Can you help us out? You gave us a great new feature that the average player cannot access. It's like you gave us a new hammer but kept all the nails.

actually you could change thee default music even in 4.7 or erlier i don't know i begun with 1946. just enter this path in windows XP C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\samples\Music\Menu or in win vista/7/8 C:\Program Files x86\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\samples\Music\Menu and replace the old music from the country you want with your music (attention make backups of the old music and be sure that your music will have the name of the old one).

except if you are talking about a feature of sound effects.

Well, once you set DebugSounds=1 under [game] in conf.ini, you can see the filenames in the console, but it can be a pain to scroll and fish them out. Now, if one could do a console message dump with only sound related lines...
A list of the .prs filenames would be nice, too.

Suppose all files, including wavs, can be found with SFS Extractor?

Thanks Pfeil but I think you are not even close with your total samples. I saw a sound mod once and there were over 670 samples. You're missing all the engine sounds like the Allison, PrattWhitney, Jumo, Merlin, etc. Also missing are a lot of guns...MG_Browning30, MG_Browning50, MG_Hispano, MG_ShVAK, as well as others.

This weekend I was able to get hold of a small sound mod consisting of just a couple of guns. I liked them better than the default guns but the new ones were too loud. I was able to load them into a program called WaveStudio (which I downloaded for free) and very easily lowered the volume on the guns. I then replaced the default samples with the new ones.

This is just one small example that I am talking about. Actually, asking for just the filenames was probably a mistake. What we really need (and I also asked for) is a copy of all the .wav samples so we can review/edit/replace them as we see fit. I mean, I really don't see why TD would give us this new feature if the average player cannot use it.

Indeed. I deleted my earlier post at it was not fit for purpose.


However, there is an alternative:

Dowload SFS Extractor here (http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=7017.0).

In that .7z(open with 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/), I recommend it over WinZip or WinRar) archive is "filelist.txt", a list of every file IL2 contains within its sfs archives. One caveat: This list is from 2010, so there is no accounting for accuracy or completeness.
This is what SFS extractor uses to find its files, so those are the only ones you'll be able to extract. Unless you find another list.

This tool allows you to extract all files from the .sfs archives in your IL2 installation directory.
Be aware the fully extracted contents take up over 12GB(the size of my incomplete extraction), so make sure you have enough hard drive space.


I tried posting only the list of .wav and .prs files, but the forum won't allow 60000+ characters, so you'll have to look them up.

Thanks for trying to help, Pfeil. I'm not really interested in a list of filenames. I realized this when I saw the list you posted. I thought, what are we going to do with this? It was then I knew what the community needs is access to all of the actual samples wav. files.

When 4.12 was released with support for customizing the default sounds, I thought that we would soon be seeing a lot of sound mods from the community. We could all choose our favorites and our gaming experiences would be that much better. This has obviously not happened.

Now that enough time has passed, the reason for a lack of sound mods for stock 4.12 is quite clear. We were given an open interface for modding sounds (via the 'my_presets' and 'my_samples' folders) but we were not given access to the actual wav. samples. So the question must be asked...how can the community mod files that we do not have?

Probably the only people who have access to these files are some select Daidalos Team members and a select number of hardcore 'modders' who have the knowledge to extract these files.

So this is where we are at the moment. For the first time, the community has been officially 'allowed' to edit/alter/enhance the default IL-2 sounds but we are unable to do so because we do not have any files to work with.

Err...

Why wait for TD to provide them? As I said, you can simply extract the sound files yourself using SFS extractor. They're WAVs, playable with just about anything. Isn't that what you're asking for?

*EDIT: I was able to extract 212 WAV files from all the 'soundxx.sfs' files I could find. I'm not sure where the other 400+ files are located.

Yeah, probably every modder out there...

Just download it, and use it to open the fb_sound*.sfs files in your IL2 root directory.
This files have most (all?) the wav files used by the game.
Once you open them with the sfsextractor you can save the individual wav files wherever you like.

... sfs extractor works just fine provided you have all file-names present in filelist.txt ,which means that you need all filenames for new sounds and ones that has been changed through patches.

In order to find out what sounds have been requested and successfully loaded
in your last session, you can use the log function Il2 provides.

To do so, you need to add the following configuration to your conf.in sections:

[Console]
HISTORY=1024
HISTORYCMD=1024
LOAD=console.cmd
SAVE=console.cmd
LOG=1
LOGTIME=0
LOGFILE=log.xls
LOGKEEP=0

[sound]
DebugSound=1


This configuration enables a log file that will use an Excel file format.

When analyzing your logs, you will learn that the Il2 engine will first try to load specific engine sounds (like DB605AM and DB605DB for example or various Merlin engines) and when that has failed, will attempt to load a family of sounds (like the DB605 generalized sound used for all engines of that specific family). That means, you could use specific sounds for each DB605 sub-type or only one set of sounds for all planes using a DB605 variant.
