Ever notice the low level attack behavior of the A20 series? When dropping regular bombs or para frags the ideal solution is to drop and get out quickly,no return to strafe etc. unfortunately both A20C,G drop and sometimes climb while dropping parafrags and then go every which way and return to strafe until all target destroyed or they get shot down.
TBF's do the same thing. They will drop bombs, and get good hits, but then turn around and start strafing random targets until all are destroyed by enemy AAA.

Even more annoying is when light bombers try to strafe with LMGs. The result is predictable...

Realistically, AI attack programming has to take degree of opposition into account. When opposition was weak (i.e., number of hostile AAA or fighters in the area are low), attackers historically did loiter over their target and make repeated attacks. Otherwise, they made "one and done" attack runs, like you describe.

I notice that AI for certain medium bombers - A-20, B-25, maybe others - has them programmed to perform "belly checks" (i.e., 360 degree rolls).
The A-20 was NOT fully aerobatic, so it shouldn't perform this maneuver. Other bomber types probably shouldn't perform this maneuver unless all their crew members were properly strapped into seats. Otherwise, you risk injuring unsecured crewmen, or even ejecting them from the plane!

That bomber behaviour, is there even before TD.
B25's also do that.
They are coded to behave like the IL-2. They perform as an assault aircraft (Sturm), not as a Bomber.
Changing that AI personality behaviour may be possible by making it an option. At least, as a simple solution.
Making them evaluate AA density, would be a whole different story.

Yep, R-10, Su-2, they are all prone to perform pathetic strafing attacks after dropping their bombs, even against tanks.

Another completed and corrected Order of Battle, for 4.14 or later.
This one is for the US 5th Air Force and its predecessor, the US Far East Air Force. The latter saw intense action in the Philippines, on Java, and in Northern Australia in late 1941 and early 1942.
Note that the following "5th Air Force" units, are incorrect and should be removed from the OOB:
5AF_417BG_453BS
USA_FG_008_FS_030z
The 453 Bomb Squadron was never attached to the 417 Bomb Group.
The 30th Squadron was never attached to the 37th Fighter Group. Instead, it was attached to the 6th AF and spent the war guarding the Panama Canal.
For history geeks, there was a brief but intense campaign on Java in early 1942, with a similar plane set to what the Flying Tigers encountered in Burma during the same time period. But, unlike the Tigers, the Allies basically got their collective asses kicked.
It would be way cool if at least a partial map of Java made it into IL2, both to allow campaigns based on the heroic US 19th Bomb Group (Heavy), the US 17th Pursuit Squadron (Provisional), and the equally heroic but doomed ML-KNIL. FWIW, this campaign produced America's first ace of World War 2, LTC Boyd "Buzz" Wagner.
Anyhow, here's the OOB:

Sources for my OOB are USAF Official Histories, fact checked against other reliable sources.
In particular, the books "They Fought With What They Had" and "Every Day a Nightmare" were useful for figuring out the FEAF OOB for the Defense of the Philippines, Java and Darwin.

Another expanded and corrected OOB, this one for the 7th USAAF and its precursor, the Hawaiian Air Force.
The USHAF was mostly destroyed on the ground during the Pearl Harbor attack. The 7th AF was peripherally involved in the Battle of Midway and later supported the 5th and 13th AF in operations against Japan.
This OOB omits some units which never saw combat.

In regards to train videos, great presentation, as a closert train buff especially in regards to the DR loki's, t's a very welcome refresh, would have liked to see a BR52 (especially the condensing one) in the mix, but happy with what's been done none the less.
.....condensing one? I here you ask.......

By the way, I'm curious why was the Br55 chosen as the representative class of Axis loki ?

My goodness, after seeing the train videos I am very happy!
Being a bit of a railway nut, seeing that the coupling rods and motion was animated was just pure joy!
By the way, I'm curious why was the Br55 chosen as the representative class of Axis loki ?
I would guess it might have something to with the age of the locomotive type, something that would fit the earliest scenarios in IL-2 that still saw use throughout the war. Where as something like the Kriegslok/DRB Class 52 didn't see service until 1942.
If one were to make a suggestion for the future..
I think adding in a British loco set would be nice too. Something that could be used as the allied loco type on the new Tobruk map as an example (or indeed, any other western front map). The type of locomotive best suited would probably be a Stanier 8F (first introduced in 1935) that was used quite a bit by the War Department early on before being replaced by the WD Austerity 2-8-0 (which was first introduced in 1943).

Actually the vast majority of the DR rolling stock dated from the 20's and 30's and in some cases from before WWI, much of it being incorporated from the multitude of the pre-nationalised railways companies and authorities that existed across Germany, like the Prussian State Railways. But it's true the modern types like the BR52, 44, 01 hail from the late 30's and early 40's.
During WWII the DR also acquired extra stock from the occupied territories, much of it purchased originally from Germany or built under licence pre-war (including polish, etc versions of the BR55).
The BR 55 (G8.1) was used for heavy freight due to it's relatively heavy weight and to a lesser extent for some passenger services on main lines. But I can think of quite a few other types that have similar spec's from the same period and available in similar or even greater numbers. So I was just intrigued to here from the creator(s) why the they picked the BR55.

So, it appears we are about to recieve totally reworked trains with newly added in armored trains, and ships have also had their mutli directional fire capability as well as rate of fire for each tube. wow, ship attacks now will be harder than ever.
Also that same person on you tube has a take off video of a PO-2? Will this be flyable in 413.1?

Very good presentation.
So... since we can have lights on moving chiefs...
*cough* night-carrier ops *cough*; however, they'd have to be different objects of course, because sometimes you would NOT want lights on a carrier.
But still.
Very cool.

While beggars can't be choosers, if we get new objects it would be nice if each nation had a distinctive pattern to its ground vehicles - as an aid to mission builders and strafers.
For example, British CMP pattern truck - very distinctive.
+1 for the amazing work on the new train models. Not only do they look great, but the ability to have moving parts on ground objects opens up a host of possibilities, like flags that wave, windsocks that move with the wind, or possibly even Landing Signals Officers on carriers.

.....re trains, here's a (although modern) reference tube for military steam, it gives a little bit of an idea of what WWII transport must have been like.
Again I think the rail upgrades are great, many thumbs up, yet and I think maybe it's been mentioned here before that it's a pity the smoke can't be a lighter grey or even white, additionally extra steam coming out of the valves onto the track bed would complete the package, maybe one day.

Maybe in the world of IL-2 coal is so abundant that they don't bother with efficient firing, or the quality of said coal is just rubbish? ;)
On another more serious note, I do agree it would be nice to have the smoke in a grey/white colour.
Nice video you linked, by the way. Definitely saving that one.

I know you were being silly, but even low grade lignite coal burns with a grayish yellow color. It just produces less energy as it burns. A good example is any color picture of a Chinese or Soviet-era Eastern European coal-fired factory.
Anything that's powered using decent coal should have a gray smoke cloud.
We need more and different smoke colors. Black for oil/fuel fires, and burning vehicles, dark gray brown for dirty coal-fired smokestacks and building fires, light gray for steam, clean-burning coal smokestacks, and wood fires, plus colored smoke for air support and supply drop missions.
As for trains, since you can have steam jets emerging from the pistons, why can't you have BIG jets of steam shooting out of the smokestack and boiler when the train is destroyed?

+1. Dark smoke makes locomotive busting even harder at night.
During WW2, steam locomotives could sometimes also be detected at night due to sparks rising up the chimney from the firebox, and the glow from the firebox when the stoker opened the door to shovel in more coal.

Hehe
well just google train smoke, you can choose between white, grey or black, or perhaps all three shades together.
Perhaps some extra coding to randomize the smoke effects, I'm sure TD would appreciate that suggestion :)

Here's my complete USAAF Order of Battle for IL2, as RegInfo.properties, and RegShort.properties files.
Assuming it's possible to add more squadrons to IL2 without blowing it up, its my little bit to make the game better.
This file includes every flight squadron from every US Army Air Force which served in a combat zone, and corrects a few problems with existing USAAF units.
Nomenclature and organization follows period USAAF practice, although information about wing, division, etc. is omitted. I've tried to use consistent spelling and abbreviations in order to make it easier to find units.
Some of the unit names are quite long, since they include information about squadron, group and Air Force, as well as supplemental info like bomber group type. They could be abbreviated a bit without losing data.
What's New:
US Bombardment groups included bomber class in their name - Dive, Light, Medium, Heavy, or Very Heavy - and I've added all that information to the RegInfo file. Given the hundreds of possible bomber units, this makes it easier for mission builders to choose appropriate squadrons when making bombing missions.
I've added headquarters squadrons to all Groups where it is appropriate. These squadrons mostly weren't flight squadrons, but were responsible for the squadron commander's and flying staff officers' personal aircraft, as well as aircraft which had yet to be assigned to a squadron, and the inevitable "hack" aircraft which were used for liaison and training.
I've added all the combat support aircraft squadrons which were directly attached to a particular Air Force, including liaison, rescue, transport, and weather squadrons. These will be handy now that we're getting a flyable C-47/DC-3. I've also added Pan American Airways and CATC (China-America Air Transport Corporation) which were civilian outfits which contracted with the 10th USAAF to transport personnel over "The Hump" to and from China.
I've added several early war precursor units to the "numbered" air forces, like the Middle East Air Force and the China Air Task Force. These will be handy for mission builders building 1942/early 1943 scenarios.
I've duplicated squadrons which were moved between different air forces as needed, in order to give a full order of battle for each air force's entire existence. For example, one unit started with the US Far East Air Force in 1941, was moved to the Middle East Air Force in 1942, then went to the 12th USAAF in 1943, and finally the 15th USAAF in 1944!
Finally, I've included a short list of units which I believe should be removed from the game. These are units which either never existed or never served in the formation to which they were assigned in the game.
Reworked trains is really nice! thank you DT for your efforts! I hope to see it soon on my pc :)

Trains and Tanks look great.
I was a big WW2 buff growing up, (focused mainly on the air, and pacific, but I would think I would have seen photo's of these trains in some book). Did the Germans have a lot of them? And were they effective, I know Europe have a extensive rail net work, but they are still limited to that network, and I would assume fairly easy to find from the air, and destroy.
Great Work TD!

Armored trains were relatively rare units, and were mostly useful for defending strategic points along rail lines, and for anti-partisan ops (to defend against saboteurs attempting to destroy rail lines). There were used by Germany and the USSR on the Eastern Front and by Japan in China.
As air power got better, armored trains became less effective both because they could more easily be destroyed by air, and because larger bombs could easily destroy railroad tracks.
Once "locomotive busting" ops got really well developed in the later war years, locomotives and rolling stock had to be well camouflaged and/or hidden in tunnels or deep culverts to hide them from view.

Questions for TD:
I'm currently working my way through the Australian, New Zealand and UK orders of battle, with an eye towards "improving" them like I did for the USAAF.
1) Is this effort useful or am I wasting my time? Can more units be added to RegInfo/RegShort without blowing up the game or making it too slow to load?
2) If I add new units to the game, is it required that I add squadron crests (seldom used on actual aircraft) and/or fuselage letter codes?
With time, I can add this info for most units.
3) Many Australian and New Zealand units served with the RAF. Some ML-KNIL (Dutch East Indies AF) units served under RAAF control. How should I include these units in the game?
If you're choosing a squadron in the QMB or a campaign, it makes more sense to include RNZAF, RAAF, etc. units under the appropriate nationality.
But, if you're choosing a squadron in the FMB, it makes more sense to include those units under the appropriate controlling formation (i.e., RAF or RAAF).
In terms of the game, you need the appropriate nationality in order to get the correct language pack to load.
4) Would there be any interest in adding other British Commonwealth nations to the game? If there's interest, I could do orders of battle for Canada, India, South Africa, and possibly Rhodesia. Units from those nations served in the Middle East, Italy, Europe and/or Pacific, mostly under RAF command.
By default, these new nations could use US, UK, Australian or NZ voice packs until you get actual, proper voice packs. (US voice pack for Canada, NZ voice pack for SA & Rhodesia, UK voice pack for India. Apologies to any actual Canadians, South Africans, Zimbabweans, or Indians reading this.)
5) Would there be any interest in adding China to the game? I can add the 1941-1945 "Nationalist" Chinese (Republic of China AF) squadrons. Currently, my USAAF OOB includes a few Chinese American Composite Group squadrons which historically carried the Nationalist AF insignia, like the AVG did.
6) Would there be any interest in adding Manchukou or other minor Allied and Axis nations to the game? I can provide national insignia and perhaps OOB info, but obviously not voice packs.
Missing Axis Nations which fielded Air Forces: Bulgaria, Iraq, RSI (Repubblica Sociale Italiana), Vichy France.
Missing Allied Nations which fielded Air Forces: Belgium, Brazil, China, Canada, Czechloslovakia, Denmark, Free France, Greece, India, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, South Africa, Yugoslavia.

Hello))
it's interesting) ...
but at first i must say that in 4.13.1 already added some about 900 differnt squadrons maded by our closest ally Motorhead VMF-214 ...
so at current moment USAAF theme is closed at some about 90 percent
ws added all squadrons which was really in battles ...
( no any transports or Recon squads )
also ... was maded and added in 4.13.1 all(or almost all squads ) for RAFs/Canada/New Zealand/Australia/South Africa/The Indian Air Force/Polish and French squads ... (French for 1939 till 1940 time period)
in that case ... from what you prupose ... you can pay attention on following things ...
Missing Axis Nations:
- Bulgaria
- Iraq
- RSI (Repubblica Sociale Italiana)
- Vichy France
Missing Allied Nations:
- Belgium
- Brazil
- China
- Czechloslovakia
- Denmark
- Free France
- Greece
- Mexico
- Norway
- Philippines
- Yugoslavia
remark: Free France squadrons under RAF control is added in 4.13.1.
but i must warn you ... that in current moment we didn't think about adding new Nations ... but if it will be made properly .. i think it wuold be not hard to add it in patch .. if it wil be made correct ..
in fact ... all that work with new squads deserve to be new DevUp)))
Motorhead VMF-214 made HUGE work with it...

The Royal Hellenic Air Force (Ellinikí Vasilikí Aeroporía, RHAF) had to face the numerically and technologically superior Regia Aeronautica. It comprised 45 fighters, 24 light bombers, nine reconnaissance aircraft, about 65 auxiliary aeroplanes and 28 naval cooperation aircraft. It consisted of the 21st, 22nd, 23rd and 24th pursuit squadrons, the 31st, 32nd, 33rd bomber squadrons, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th military cooperation squadrons, the 2828 Independent Military Cooperation Flight and the 11th, 12th and 13th naval cooperation squadrons. At the outbreak of the war the operational combat fleet of the Greek Air Force counted 24 PZL P.24 and nine Bloch MB.151 fighters, as well as eleven Bristol Blenheim Mk IV, ten Fairey Battle B.1 and eight Potez 633 B2 bombers.[83] Serviceable ground attack and naval support aircraft included about nine Breguet 19 two-seater biplane bombers, 15 Henschel Hs 126 reconnaissance and observation aircraft, 17 Potez 25A observation aircraft, nine Fairey III amphibious reconnaissance aircraft, 12 Dornier Do 22G torpedo bombers, and 9 Avro Anson maritime reconnaissance aircraft.[84] The main air bases were located in Sedes, Larissa, Dekeleia, Faleron, Eleusis, Nea Anchialos and Maleme.[83]

On 22 October 1940, six days before the Italian invasion of Greece, despite the Italian invasion of Egypt, the RAF Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Middle East in Cairo was ordered to prepare squadrons for Greece, based on Ultra decodes and other sources that an Italian invasion of Greece was imminent.[85] The RAF first sent 30 Squadron, consisting of one flight of Blenheim IF night fighters and one flight of Blenheim I light bombers, that were based at Athens-Eleusis airfield.[86] Soon afterwards, six Vickers Wellington medium bombers were detached from 70 Squadron and a flight of Blenheim Is from 84 Squadron arrived. All RAF assets were placed under the command of Air vice-marshal John D'Albiac.[87] The RAF aircraft participated in the Greek counter-offensive that began on 14 November, with No. 84 Squadron operating forward from Menidi.[88] A few days later, the Gloster Gladiator fighters of 80 Squadron moved forward to Trikala, causing significant losses to the Regia Aeronautica.[89] 211 Squadron with Blenheim Is, followed before the end of November, joining 84 Squadron at Menidi and 80 Squadron moved to Yannina, about 64 kilometres (40 mi) from the Albanian border. In the first week of December, 14 Gladiators were transferred from the RAF to the RHAF.[90]

So, it sounds like someone else has already done the work.
But, did he get the early war units rather than just the "numbered" USAAF air forces?
Did he correct errors in the existing order of battle?
My work might aid his work there.
(not any transports or Recon squads )
I've added all the transport, liaison, recon, and air rescue squadrons to the USAAF OOB, but only when they were actually in combat.
also ... was maded and added in 4.13.1 all(or almost all squads ) for RAFs/Canada/New Zealand/Australia/South Africa/The Indian Air Force/Polish and French squads ... (French for 1939 till 1940 time period)
Do these designations include wing and command information, or is it just a list of numbered squadrons? The first is better for both players and mission builders.
remark: Free France squadrons under RAF control is added in 4.13.1.
So, RAF and RAAF squadrons composed of foreign personnel, but under RAF or RAF control, should be listed under RAF or RAAF listings.
But, by doing that, you'll have the wrong language pack! Your Czech and French squadrons flying for the RAF will speak British English, and your Dutch squadrons flying for the RAAF will speak Australian dialect English!
that in current moment we didn't think about adding new Nations ... but if it will be made properly .. i think it wuold be not hard to add it in patch .. if it wil be made correct ..
Getting unit information is easy. Getting unit badges and squadron codes might be harder. Voice packs would be the most difficult since it requires getting fans who are fluent in the appropriate languages to do voice recordings.
Currently, there is an "all nations" mod which does a very good job of adding new nations and insignia to the game, but isn't so good for units and squadron insignia.

Adding the Greek campaigns to the game would be hard. You'd have to add so many new objects, maps and aircraft that it would almost be a whole new game!
It makes more sense to just add the Greek squadrons which served in the RAF, with the appropriate awards, voice packs, etc.
Getting squadron names/numbers, ranks, awards, and national markings graphics for small air forces is easy. Getting squadron insignia is harder. Getting squadron codes and command hierarchy info is even harder, sometimes impossible. Info on tactics, readiness, training levels, etc. is also hard to find.
i must say few words about Motorhead VMF-214.
he is very good company maker .. you can find his works on Aviaskins ...
some time ago he realized that he need for his campaings some squads which isn't in il2 .... and he spend some about two years for it ...
my point is ... he added mosty that squads which he considired like important for company makers ... and for his self at first ...
and now his answer for your questions ...
But, did he get the early war units rather than just the "numbered" USAAF air forces?
early war units was addad only that which could be used and useful in some campaings ...
Did he correct errors in the existing order of battle?
yep ....
I've added all the transport, liaison, recon, and air rescue squadrons to the USAAF OOB, but only when they were actually in combat.
i added Transportation squads that I need to campaign intelligence and other similar there to a minimum. Well, it makes no sense add all connected Squadron, which flew some L-5, the Sentinel, because the aircraft will be only a few times.
Do these designations include wing and command information, or is it just a list of numbered squadrons? The first is better for both
players and mission builders
No signs of belonging to the wing and the more command is not present. In contrast to the USAAF, RAF squadrons, most of the war more than once
transferred from one wing to the other. In this situation, it makes no sense to add more of the same squadron with only a postscript to a different wing.
But, by doing that, you'll have the wrong language pack! Your Czech and French squadrons flying for the RAF will speak British English,
and your Dutch squadrons flying for the RAAF will speak Australian dialect English!
As far as I know, foreign pilots in the RAF specifically studied English. French or Polish, then again, if I am not mistaken, all
It is forbidden to use in radio, not to create chaos in communication with ground controllers.
you are going to use the fact that the offer to add?
you are going to do the campaign on a high level of detail, and will use all of these connected and rescue squads?

Fair enough. Many of the early war units I added would mostly be useful for modded maps, like the US Far East Air Force. US Middle East Air Force and Hawaiian AF would be useful for existing maps, however.
i added Transportation squads that I need to campaign intelligence and other similar there to a minimum. Well, it makes no sense add all connected Squadron, which flew some L-5, the Sentinel, because the aircraft will be only a few times.
Transport squadrons become important if there are flyable C-47 in the game. Liaison squadrons are mostly valuable to modders because there are no L-5 or other "grasshopper" aircraft in the game. For now, they could be left out.

Good point. I'd only ask that each squadron be labeled with the general type of aircraft they flew, so you don't have to be a military historian in order to put together a plausible RAF, RAAF, or RNZAF order of battle.
As far as I know, foreign pilots in the RAF specifically studied English. French or Polish, then again, if I am not mistaken, all It is forbidden to use in radio, not to create chaos in communication with ground controllers.
They studied English, but it is difficult to master a foreign language with just a few months of daily lessons squeezed in between other aspects of operational training.
For intra-squadron communications foreigners in the RAF or RAAF often reverted to their native language. But, they had enough English that they could understand and send messages in English to Ground Control Stations or other units, and make themselves understood in English when needed.
In those cases, realistically, you'd have have "mixed" voice packs - with native language for "individual" or "squadron" commands like "Break Left" or "Anybody help me!" but accented English for commands from a squadron to other units, (like, "Thanks for joining us!"). Ground control commands would be in British-accented English.
There's a great scene in the "Battle of Britain" film, where members of No. 303 (Polish) squadron serving in the RAF deliberately ignore their leader's orders - given in English - and attacks a German plane using Polish to communicate among themselves.

There was one lucky armored train during seige of Sevastopol in 1941-1942.
It has survived from Nov 1941 until the days of the 3rd (and final) German sturm in June 1942. 100mm marine guns, 7.62mm and 12.7 mm machine guns, mortars. Two engines, workshop and team of repairmen. Camouflage adapted to season and terrain. Local landscape and tunnels (there are 5 of them near the city) allowed the train to escape and hide after raids.
It has been damaged and blocked inside of rail tunnel after another Luftwaffe attack. Germans has restored and requipped the train and used it until May 1944.

Yep. That's the one.
There's a lovely documentary on 303 squadron here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptijNcDanVw
Over time, the "bloody foreigners" in the RAF learned more English, if only to help them buy beer and meet English women, but I'm sure that the temptation to revert to native language in emergencies must have been huge.
For the RAAF, things might have been a bit different, since some of the RAAF (NEI) squadrons only had Dutch pilots, but Australian gunners and ground crew! I'd think that there's much more incentive to learn the language if you need to make yourself understood to your crew and mechanics. (That, and the Dutch seem to have a genius for learning other people's languages. :) ).
Getting historical voice packs for the RAF and RAAF foreign squadrons would be a real challenge, and I'm not sure IL2 is up to it.
You'd need to add South African, Canadian, Rhodesian, and even Caribbean-accented English to the existing UK, Australian and New Zealand voice packs to represent all the Commonwealth nations, plus Accented/Bad English packs with American, Czech, Dutch, French, Greek, Irish, Norwegian, and Polish accents to represent foreigners who flew with the RAF!

Hello TD.
What a great job with the latest ground units. Some of them were very outdated, as the BT and KV tanks; as well as new variants, that are always welcome. About the trains, just one word: marvelous.
And as a source, in case you don't know it, try this website: www.o5m6.de Lots of Soviet and Lend-Lease vehicles profiles, including AFVs, trucks, ships and, of course trains. Hope it helps.

That was something that was being developed for CloD, not for the IL2:1946 franchise. IIRC, it was a British single 40mm Bofors gun, not a quad.
Maybe a US quad AAA gun mod exists as a mod for IL2:1946, but I haven't seen it.

It seems like it would be easy to add them, although the simplest way to do it is to have a combined gun and prime mover combination.

The update is coming why not put one or more Easter eggs?. That is, an upgrade or new feature in the simulator which you do not specify what it is, but users have to find out, and hidden things. Example:
* Public clocks that work giving the exact time at which the flight is being carried out.
* The church bells sounding every six hours.
* Convert an AI airplane into a a flyable airplane
* An open canopy in an airplane that in the simulator didn't have this characteristic (like you did in the J8A).
* Or any other great idea.

Maybe the flyable He-111 H11 and H16 variants are proof that TD reads wish-list threads! ;)
Those variants fill a big hole in the German mid-war Order of Battle.
The R-5 civil version is also, functionally, the first flyable trainer/liaison aircraft to be added to the game. Very handy for sight-seeing, mission testing, and improving basic piloting skills.
It would be interesting to get exterior views of the new R-5s, to determine if we get actually ski variants as well as variants with wheels.
Big thanks to TD!

I'm not sure what you want to call the R-5 improved ground attack version in English, but "CCC" is the Cyrillic abbreviation. The transliterated Latin abbreviation would be "SSS", from "skorostnoi, skoropod'emnoi, skorostrel'nyi".

It's been brought up numerous times before, and it's worth bringing up again:
*** Rookie fighter AI is too skilled against Veteran and Ace fighter AI!!! ***
A good example is nine Rookie AI in I-16s vs eight Veteran and Ace AI in Bf-109s, circa June 1941. Often the AI 109 pilots will go down low and try turn fighting with the Polikarpovs, (AI flying BnZ type aircraft tended not to do this before the AI got overhauled a few patches ago), getting their asses handed to them in the process. Most, if not all of the I-16s, I-153s, etc may eventually get shot down, but at least half of the 109s get shot down as well. Often, almost all of the 109s are lost during the engagement. It's gotten to the point where you are surprised if an Ace 109 formation shoots down a Rookie Polikarpov formation with little or no loss. Again, we are talking about 100% Rookie formation against a formation consisting 100% of Veterans and Aces, and even if every AI 109 pilot in the formation is an Ace, events usually end up the same way.
Frankly, there is no way Rookie AI should be able to perform against Veteran and Ace AI like they do in this game. It's ridiculous. Some insist on making excuses on why that is OK, but it's not, and many will attest to that.
Rookies should be fodder - that's why they are the lowest AI skill rating in the game - but they are often anything but.
Please, for the love of Pete, tone down the Rookie AI skill. By a lot. Leave the hotdog shit for the Vets and Aces. Not looking to make the game easier, but it kills any immersion and perception of events when you have noobs flying around in I-16s and I-153s swatting 109 aces out of the sky like it's nothing.

In this case, the problem seems to be that the AI programming makes Veteran or Ace Bf-109 pilots decide to fight on the enemy's terms, rather than that generic Rookie AI skill is too good. That is, there's a problem that Veteran and Ace AI isn't good enough.
Additionally, the AI doesn't take into account the fact that the Germans in 1941 were likely to all have reliable radios, while the Soviets did not, and that Luftwaffe pilots were expected to show initiative, while Soviet pilots were expected to obey orders and follow their leader at all costs.
Rookies should be fodder - that's why they are the lowest AI skill rating in the game - but they are often anything but.
I'm not sure it's possible, but there should actually be a level of skill below Rookie, called "Trainee" or "Unqualified". Rookie should represent recent graduates from a decent school who are "qualified," but who have little to no combat experience. Unqualified should represent the real cannon fodder who had no business being in an aircraft in a combat zone.

I think it is the other way round, Ace/Veteran AI is too bad against Rookie AI, especially against TnB planes. AI is too TnB oriented in general, it is more than a joke when flights of Fw190 get destroyed with no loss to the enemy by I-16/I-153 when both are Veteran/Ace. And this happens not once, but most of the time.

I agree on the other point made by yourself and Majorfailure that it is more accurate to say the Ace AI does very stupid things against lower skilled AI that gets them into trouble. At any rate, I wish something could be done about that. While the AI is in many ways much better than it used to be, this issue is still a very annoying one.

So my thoughts about the A/I were right! A few days ago I just noticed that the Roookie enemy kicked Veteran butts and that something was definitely wrong. A/I has improved but this Super-Rookie issue needs to be fixed. Until then I guess I won't use Rookies but will use Average A/I instead.

Just to fact check things, I ran a couple of 16 vs. 16 AI missions.
QMB. Bessarabia Map, no flak or objective, 1000 m altitude, no advantage to either side, clear weather. 16 Ace Bf-109E-7 vs. 16 Rookie I-16 Type 24.
Results were consistently massive victory for the Bf-109s, with a 16:1 or better kill ratio.
The only unrealistic rookie AI behavior I saw was on the first mission were a rookie I-16 was able to follow a slightly damaged Bf-109 into a vertical climb, score crippling damage on it at 400 m, and then come out above the Bf-109 at the top of the loop to kill it.
Since I had "Arcade Mode" on, I got to see AI behavior commands as well. Bf-109 were attacking by flight, with the lead plane consistently using energy attack, and the other three planes in the flight performing various forms of defensive cover.
I-16 used turn attacks, and periodically used defensive moves, as well as "panicking". In one case, I watched a slightly damaged I-16 accidentally enter a spin and crash.
So, based on those results, I'd say that AI is pretty good and returns the expected results.
If there's a problem for me, it's that Ace AI doesn't use energy fighting tactics quite as well as it might.
Obviously, though, there are situations where there are problems with Ace/Veteran AI using stupid tactics.

My only gripes with A.I. is their tendency to all focus on my plane, seems every mission, first pass onto the furball, and half the A.I. have decided to target me, not my wing men, just me, shoulder shooting and even colliding when there are four (4) or five (5) 100m off my 6.
(I fly invincible, & unlimited ammo off line, so I just wait them out)
And their ability to see through the tail of their plane, even when they are chasing a target.
And I had a bunch of B-29 gunners targeting me through a cloud today, right through, neither of us was in the cloud, it was between us, and all these tracers flying out of it.
They tend to stay in burning planes too long, and they pull a lot of neg G's.
But some times, most of the time, they act like, or seem to act like real planes, and you forget it's a game.

Have you ever tried not entering the fight first? Should work, AI tend to focus on first plane in view. And even if they focus on you, it should not happen that you get them all on your six. Are you familiar with the concept of energy fighting? You may want to have a look at this:
http://www.virtualpilots.fi/feature/lento_ohjeet/inpursuit/inpursuit.pdf
Short summary is:
You enter a fight only if you have clear picture how to disengage if all goes south. That is easy if you are in a plane that has either a clear advantage in top speed or climb rate (You in a Bf109F(any)/g-2, enemy in a Yak-1/Hurricane/P-40/...). Then you can enter a fight even with a slight disadvantage in altitude. With other plane combinations you have to have an altitude advantage or numerical superiority to even stand a chance. And you try to use maneuvering that does not cost energy, when the enemy turns in a plane that turns better than yours you do not follow, you pull up, roll, pull down, level out and are behind and above the enemy again. You never give up position willingly, so if an enemy does a split-S or dives, you usually do not follow him, at least as long as there are other possible enemies around.
And their ability to see through the tail of their plane, even when they are chasing a target.
They cannot see through tails any more, but they still seem to have perfect and instant coverage of their field of view as soon as they are in combat.
While i flight their vision seems to be limited now, it is possible but rare to shoot them down unaware, dive below their six out of their field of view, and use your energy to catch them from the lower rear. Works best with planes that have a blocked rear view, e. g. Macchi 205.[/QUOTE]

OK, maybe I was jumping the gun by condemning the A/I. Maybe the situation in my mission put the Veterans in a bad position to counter effectively.
I'm not questioning your experience. I think there are situations where Ace or Veteran AI isn't as "smart" as it should be, and where Rookies are too good. But, initial conditions and altitude might make a big difference.
In the "furball" missions I generated, I noticed a tendency for the Ace Bf-109 to follow Rookie I-16 pilots down to near ground level (albeit later in the fight when odds were massively in favor of the Germans), rather than maintaining their altitude. Early in the fight, the Bf-109 weren't as aggressive about getting and maintaining an altitude advantage as they could be.
In all cases, Ace wingmen weren't as good as they could be about covering the lead plane's rear. The one Bf-109 shootdown I saw could have easily been prevented had the lead plane's #2 maintained proper position, or if the AI was trained to do a proper "drag and bag" or "Thatch weave" team attack.
While it's realistic, there were also a few cases where I observed "shoulder shooting" by AI planes - especially late in the fight when there were lots of Germans and few Soviets. But, Aces should have better situational awareness and fire discipline, both to stay out of the way of a friendly plane's line of fire, and to stop shooting when a friendly plane pops up between them and the target.

An idea that I would find interesting: formation tactics, according to historical situation.
A flight's tactics would be set for each flight pre-mission (and be found in your mission briefing). The leader-wingman -pair system, that every fighter AI currently uses, was historically one of the Axis' tactical advantages early in the war.
Apparently the Soviet doctrine, before they learned from their experiences, was that a flight of three would stay in close formation in combat, and everyone would fire their guns when the leader did.
A rookie AI could of course get excited and completely ignore any tactics he's supposed to follow.

The VIC formation from the british when attacking bombers applied the same tactics. Particularly with the Hurricanes.
There are many improvements which could be made to AI, particularly when it comes to flight, section, and squadron tactics.
The most fundamental change, seemingly simple, but probably a lot of work to implement, is to give the mission builder (in FMB) or player (in QMB and formation commands) the ability to designate whether the "base unit" for formations is 1, 2 or 3 planes.
If the base unit is one plane, each plane maneuvers on its own. If the base unit is 2 planes, they use "rotte" or "loose deuce" tactics, and sections maneuver using "finger four" or "schwarme" tactics. If the base unit is 3 planes, they maneuver in "vics" or "line abreast" using bomber or early war fighter tactics.
Realistically, planes without radios are limited to single plane base formations, and player commands don't work unless the planes within the player's formation are within 100 m or so of the lead plane and have visual on him.
Other commands for AI, which would be easier to implement, would be "Attack with guns/rockets/bombs/torpedoes/guided bombs." and "Attack on my command". For unguided bombs, there would be an additional command: "Attack type dive bomb/glide bomb/level bomb/skip bomb." These commands could be linked to "Attack X" target, to make AI planes in the player's formation attack a particular target using a particular type of weapon, and "hold fire" until commanded to attack.
Example, for medium bombers with strafing capacity. "Attack Ground" > "Attack with bombs" > "Level bombing" > "Attack on my command" gets the entire formation to drop bombs from level bombing formation on the target of the lead plane's choice, as soon as the lead plane drops its bombs.
Or, for fighters flying in "vic" formation of 3, "Attack my target (air)" > "Attack with guns" > "Attack on my command" gets all the planes in the player's formation to start shooting as soon as he does.

That would finally give a meaning to planes equipped with good radios beyond their single plane capabilities. Especially the Soviets early war would be hurt quite bad.
If you want to get into details, there are actually three aspects to period radios.
First, many early war aircraft (notably Soviets and Chinese) didn't have radios. Realistically, any aircraft without a radio can't be commanded or warned via radio.
Second, 1940s radios were temperamental. They were prone to failure, they had limited range, and the number of frequencies on which they could transmit or receive was quite limited. The low quality radios - like those produced by the Soviets or the Japanese - had unacceptably short range and/or so produced so much static that they were functionally useless. High quality radios had better range and a clearer signal (but even then, jamming and other factors could interfere with range and signal clarity).
Third, in many cases, aircrew had no way of knowing if their radio was working properly, and had little recourse if their radio stopped sending or receiving. In particular, the radio on most fighters was mounted behind the armor-plating behind the pilot, so there was no way to fix the radio if it was broken, or even determine if it was damaged. Even for multi-crew aircraft, most aircraft didn't carry spare radios, or spare parts, which means that they were out of luck if their radio broke.

As in adding them as potential targets for a mission?
That would be nice, especially if you could specify ship class (Carrier, Battleship, merchant ship convoy, etc.)
Very useful for setting up shipping strike missions. (Although I typically just use the Pacific Islands map, since it has both an Allied and Japanese merchant ship close at hand.)

Would it be possible to add off-road vehicle tracks as an effect?
In most types of terrain, vehicles, especially heavy tracked vehicles, leave behind trails which are clearly visible from the air (unless they're carefully camouflaged).
For example:
http://lalitkumar.in/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/battle-longewala-tank-tracks-india-pakistan-war-lalitkumar.jpg
https://britisharmy.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/tfh-1mechbde-2013-032-0082.jpg

Adding track marks makes it much easier to detect ground vehicles, especially at altitude.
I'm thinking that the current "skid mark" effect for crashed aircraft could be adapted for ground vehicles.
Additionally, I'm wondering if it's possible for the wake effect for ships to be bigger, longer, and longer-lasting, especially for large ships. This makes it much easier to spot ships underway at a distance or at high altitudes.
For example:

Given that we'll eventually get a map of France and SE England, it makes sense to create a 1940 version of that map, and add some planes and vehicles to populate it.
But, I don't think that we'll get a whole lot of new French planes. Most likely, we'll just get flyable versions of French H75, MS406, and MS410.
I'm also not sure that we'll get any early war French or British vehicles other than what can be converted from TOW.

about 6 years ago there was this kid that imported not only the tanks but the whole TOW models into 1946. in a mod. plus the infantry.
I dont know what happen to the mod..but there is a thread that was started by him about 5 to 6 yeas ago on this.
i suppose that i know about what you talking about ...
but main issue even that mod that model in it was taken from TOW or TOW addons ... almost as it is ... we get permission model from TOW only with adoptation by poly limits and texture size ... and we try to keep our promise ... for example that tanks which you saw it's second or third lod from original TOW model ... plus following reduicing poly and details ...

Wonderful work on an amazing selection of Bf-110s! Just about every major mid-war variant is represented. As long as players fly by day, they have no complaints coming about the number of Bf-110 options.
Is it my imagination, or has the volume of fire and accuracy of the tail gunners on the Wellington been seriously reduced?
If so, that means that the Wellington with Ace crew is no longer equipped with Star Wars Laser Turrets O' Flaming Death. But, it also means that one of my favorite gunnery test planes has been seriously nerfed (not that I'm complaining).

Please make at least Bf 110C-1 (for 1939-40 scenarios), it has no crew armor (c-4 has an additional 9mm armor), older, less effective MG FFs instead of MG FF/M and older radio (FuG III vs FuG 10). It will be very great addition. I can only dreaming about Bf 110B-1/2/3, but this is harder to make than C-1 :) Cheers!

The Bf-110 B series was only produced in limited numbers and never saw combat.
But, +1 for the C-1 model, since it was the definitive Bf-110 during the Polish campaign and many continued in service during the Norwegian campaign and the Battle of France. During those campaigns, where the Germans had more or less complete air superiority, the Bf-110 did a great job as an attack aircraft.
I don't think that there were any changes to the pilot's cockpit as compared to the C-4, although radio and gun would need to be changed for the observer. FM changes would be downrated engines. DM changes would be downrated guns and no armor for the pilot.
With very minor changes (change of guns and radio) the C-1 model could be converted to the C-3. Presumably the C-3 observer's cockpit was identical to that of the C-4.

The Bf-110 B series (...) never saw combat
Of course it saw combat, mostly (or only) in Poland and Norway, e.g. reports said, that during '39 Polish Defensive War, P.11c pilots destroyed 5 Bf 110C and 2 Bf 110B, and severely damaged 4 Bf 110C and 1 Bf 110B, there are some reports and photos about crashed Bf 110B in Norway Campaign as well :)
It's interesting that in Polish Campaign, there are first and last usage of 30-50 Ju 86 (possibly E version) bombers in WWII as well!

I stand corrected. My sources indicated that the B series was withdrawn from first-line service and just used for training prior to September 1939.
But, if advanced training units were deployed to Poland, or if Bf-110B were deployed to bring first-line units up to full strength during the Poland and Norway campaigns, then I could believe the B series saw combat, albeit in limited numbers.
Even so, it's impossible to include every model of every plane in the game. The selection of Bf-110 that TD has provided us does a very good job of covering the day fighter and attack versions from late 1940 to 1945. The only major variant that's missing is one of the very earliest C models.
Given that we've got maps of Norway and will be getting a map of 1940 France, the C-1 variant seems the most logical if TD wanted to give us one more early war variant. (But, if TD is still working on more Bf-110 variants, I'd want the F4/U-1 and G4/R-8 versions much more.)

It seems that it was only the D-4 that had the MG FF removed. And that was to raplace them with a camera instead as this version was meant to be a long-range reconnaicance aircraft.

Can we get a description and role of each version of this plane (in IL-2)?
there was three type of U2 ...
1- U-2 1933 ... trainer .. ( with copilot like in P-5 ) can be used like Trainer .. or Drop ship for 1 paratrooper ...
it's plane without defense weapon ...
it can be communication aircraft or recon plane
but ... also ... it have few variants of drop amunition ... for example ... AO-10 or fab 50 ... and it is not finish yet... you will be have few type of droping cargo containers for supply mission ... para container.. and low level container... and like i said earlier ... one paratrooper ... like some kind of spy or saboteur or just for parachute Jumps trainings ... or some figure on parade by para troopers)))
and one thing ... Med Evac capsula .. for evacuate injured from behind enemy lines or from front line ...
2 - U-2 1936 ... this plane have defense MG DA... and more wide assortiment loadouts than previous ... plus bombing sight ... and even few RS)) ...
plus all not lethal loadouts like cargo and other things which have U-2 1933 ...
3 - U-2 LNB ( which can be called Po2 ... )
more wide viriants of bomb loaduts ...even cluster bombs

Has searchlight behavior been improved?
Those searchlights in the U-2 night ops track are absolutely blinding if you look into them, and seem to track enemy planes once they detect them. AAA also seems to concentrate on enemy aircraft illuminated by searchlights.
(If so, searchlight behavior could be improved even more if 1-3 adjacent searchlights were to "lock on" to the same aircraft once one searchlight detects it, to make it harder for the plane to escape from the lights by taking evasive action. This was doctrine used by most nations during WW2.)

That would be wonderful! But please, add a later Hurricane I too, with somewhat higher performance than the current early one. No 3d modifications are needed, only a bit of FM tuning.
can't promise anything for now ...

+1, but some DM tuning might also be needed, as well as some very minor tweaking of external 3D, and some revision to cockpits.
Assuming that the Hurricane Mk. I in the game represents late 1939 production, as shipped to the FAF during the Winter War, other marks of Hurricane I would be roughly as follows:
March 1940 production - 12 lb. emergency boost (vs. 6 lb. for early production, for up to 5 minutes, using 100 octane fuel). Probably the easiest new variant to add.
May 1940 production - As above, but also armor plate behind pilot's head and seat.
Mark I "Tropical" (June 1940) - As above, but Vokes air filter added.
August 1940 production - As for May 1940 production above, but Schilling orifice, improved fire protection for fuselage fuel tank (earlier version of the Hurricane were very vulnerable to fuselage fuel tank fires which could penetrate to the cockpit burning the pilot, especially when the plane was hit from the front).
September 1940 production - Improved radio. IFF added. Radio aerials from rear fuselage to horizontal stabilizer. Radio aerial from radio mast to rudder removed and radio mast slightly revised. Slightly reduced top speed.

I think a may 1940 production one would be the best to include. Of course the later variant with the schilling orifice would be even better, but in my opinion that would be a little bit silly. (Mk.IIs and Spitfire MK.Vs have engine cut out when affected by negative G, but earlier Mk.I not?)
We absolutely need a fine representation of the real hero of the battle of britain, the Hurricane I.

What I would like to ask is, there is a Hurricane 1938 in the list, but its somewhere near the Hs-129 and not located (by name) near the other Hurricanes.
Is it possible to relocate it next to the other Hurricanes?

Why don't you just change your list to alphabetical order?

That hurricane is for the axis, thats why it is in with the hs129 etc.it is for the finns, winter war against russia and the continuation war.
from 4.10 patch you can make your own QMB plane list
http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=229849
or refer to 4.10 guide
BTW, +1 to hurri 12lb :)
bye and have all a nice new year!

@ Verdun, thats to easy bro :)
I was used to have the same order as in the old il2, so i realy stuck here. I like how the list is done by nations, but that seems to be the problem for me.
Lets see if TD will create a MK I for the RAF

But if you are already used to the list you should be used to the Hurricane beeing amongst the axis aircraft aswell by now then. If it's moved to the Allied side of the list that will present a problem like you seem to have now for those who fly it in Finnish service. :P

The ones we have are all versions used by the R.A.F. But I do agree that it would be nice to have a later Mk.I than the one already present.
But then again the list of flyable aircraft that would be nice to see introduced is long...very long. We will just have to wait and see what TD has in store for us for the future.
Just for the R.A.F. I would love to see a flyable Wellington, Blenheims, Spitfire Mk.I, Sea Hurricane, Swordfish, British manufactured Beufighter, Halifax, Sunderland just to mention a few except for a later Mk.I Hurricane. 8)

Actually, the default listing order for planes is by axis vs. allies, rather than by nation.
It would be cool to have the option to sort aircraft by other criteria besides axis/allies or alphabetical, such as manufacturer, country of origin, primary user (not necc. the same as country of origin), and/or date of introduction.
But, I find that for QMB and scenario design alphabetical works well enough.

Date of introduction would be really great.
It would also be great to have different anti-aircraft settings (light AAA, heavy AAA etc.) like in the original Il-2 demo.

Hello there, I'm new to this forum but I'm following Sturmovik updates since 4.11 patch.
I have always dreamed about seeing contents from old mods such as Ultra Pack or HSFX in your official updated version, that's because this one is still kept up to date while other project are now stopped (also because they should follow annually your new patches).
New models are nice and you are doing a really beautiful work! But I'm wondering if it would be possible to implement some Map Editing features from other now abbandoned mods, like Triggers, from the last HSFX version (this should be easy, I'm trying too), or the ability to refuel and rearm your plane or to capture an enemy airbase from the good old Ultra Pack.
These functions may greatly improve map editing possibilities, especially for Multiplayer Endless Coop or Teamdeathmatch.
Thanks for the patience and again congratulations for your wonderful job!
Best regards,
Niccolò

Hi Niccolò, triggers may come in future patches, but I cannot be more specific at the moment.

If I could import just two mods into the official version of IL2, C&C would be one of them. It allows players do do a whole bunch of new things in the game, from artillery spotting to getting location fixes from ground control or onboard navigators, and vectoring aircraft to a particular map location
Combined with the excellent AI from 4.13, an official version of C&C would give IL2 some of the most sophisticated AI of any flight sim.

I have started il2 1946 in last days for some hours, and i have enjoyed it alot. The KI is nice, the graphics a bit outdated but still very nice and the feeling of flying is still there.
I own all the BOS, BOM and upcoming BOK titles or have preordered them, but i still like to fly the original il2.
Thanks guys for your work, even with your 8 man army!!! Thanks and Salute

Hello Pilots,
TD, Great work as usual, fire looks great. Two things I noticed, off line, the A.I. still all attack me, lead planes from all the flights.
And Online, I have been kicked to desk top twice in the last few weeks, not really a major issue, today I was landing and discoing anyways. I had a great ping for that server, -100, usually it's just at max, 270+, server has not warned me yet. like the other Russian server does, nag nag nag...repeating three times
Music was shot down by Blank
Blank shot down Music
and something else.
yeah server tell the whole world Blank shot me down
Some guys have a ping of 3 on this server, most are under 50, So even that 90 I was riding was a high ping.
I just don't want it to happen when someone is firing at me.
As Always great work, it's very immersive, looked at the B-24 while waiting for map to roll, nice, too nice.
Chow Happy Hunting & play nice
P.s. you know what would be nice, a Russian to English to Russian translator, even just the basics, kind of like offLine commands, break, 6up ect... But a full translator would be nice.
