I-16 had a terrible reputation until 3 top Russian pilots went around teaching the do's and don't's in a national tour. A well trained I-16 pilot could do amazing things with the plane but it is like watching Olympic athletes make feats look easy that less trained athletes wipe out trying.

Wings of Russia series shows I'16 pilots do stunts but that doesn't make them easy. I'd like to see this guy compare MiG-3 to Yak-1 for instance.
