Im having some difficulty with both stukas and ju88a4 when bombing with mixed loads. In the stuka with sc 250 and ab-23 or sc50 sometimes they dont drop all the bombs and wont make a repeat attack or return to strafe. My attack height is over 3000m. In the ju-88 it appears that an old load out of 4 sc 250 and 20 sc 50 etc has been changed to add in 900kg of fuel, which should be more of a long range mission. Dive bombing in ju88 needs more height than a stuka or should i just use sc 250/sc 500? And are AB bombs best used from level flight or in a dive? Any ideas greatly appreciated as im reworking a 2006 ju88 campaign as well as a ju87 campaign.

I'm not 100% familiar with real tactics, but if your Stukas are diving from 3000 meters, they would be pulling out at 1000 m and then bugging out as fast as possible.

As far as I'm aware, they only stuck around for ground attack with definite air superiority, and even then they probably would have arrived at low altitude to start, making a more conventional bomb run.

AB bombs can be dropped from either a dive or level flight, but you will want to set your timer accordingly.

The Ju-88 cannot dive like a Ju-87. You dive it by going down 45 degrees and using the specialized sight. Rolling inverted and then pulling vertically down was prohibited due to the stress it caused. It was also unlikely that 4x SC 500 would be used in such an attack. If you use the correct approach method, you will not need more height than a Stuka to dive bomb, as you say; The Ju-88 can do it easily at 2000m or even 1000m.

Using the Stuvi gunsight
Before the dive in your Ju-87D-5 (Ju-88.) you must set your dive airspeed (true) by buttons €œIncrease Sight Velocity€ and €œDecrease Sight Velocity€ and bomb drop altitude by buttons €œIncrease Sight Altitude€ and €œDecrease Sight Altitude€. When the plane enters the dive you must place the crosshairs onto your target and keep it there. When the plane reaches the preset altitude the warning horn will sound. The pilot should drop the bombs at this point, after which point the plane will be automatically leveled off.

Dive Bombing Method in the Ju-88
These are the actual instructions from the historical Fl Üb 8-179/4 manual.
(Traditional method with "Dive Automation")

1. Close radiator.
2. Set propeller pitch to 100% (Auto).
3. Set bombsight speed to estimated drop speed (can also adjust during dive).
4. Set bombsight altitude (for example 1000m).
5. Center trim (on Ju88 red marks).
6. Press Divebrake button (this will also trim plane to dive).
7. Set power to idle (0%).
8. Take aim with ring in top part of the sight. Also take note of the dive
bombing marker ("Krawatte") below the ring on the vertical line.
9. Hold target in the ring until you hear the drop altitude warning buzzer.
10. Pull up so that the dive bombing marker becomes superimposed on the
target. Hold steady for a moment.
11. Press the bomb release button (this will also initiate the pull-out by centering
the trim again).
12. Press the divebrake button again to raise the brakes up.
13. Apply power slowly to avoid overspeeding the engines.
14. Open the radiator and adjust prop pitch for cruise, if necessary.

I think it still works that way. It's just that many people misunderstand and assume a Ju-88 is supposed to dive like a Ju-87, but it's not. The sight works for both planes the same way though.

In the Ju88 A4, there's a red horizon line around the cockpit this should not be exceeded for dive bombing.

Recommended minimum alt for AI dive bomb attack in the Stuka B2 D3 is 1850m in IL2 1946 high angle attack
Recommended minimum alt for AI dive bomb attack in the Stuka D5 Ju88 A4 2200m in IL2 1946 shallow angle attack

Post the mission here or pm to me and I'll have a look at it and see if it needs a tweak.
