Just Installed IL-2: 1946 and I'm Completely Baffled

Can someone help me understand this sim? I'm not sure what I bought. The box says it has IL-2 plus three add-ons and I have read online they are all installed as part of 1946. The PDF manual is for Pacific Fighters because it's the most recent. I get all this so far.

But I tried to see how the sim performs so I picked a USAAF P-51D mission. I ended up sitting on some base in the Pacific hearing messages in Russian! What is that all about? Is there a language setting in the configuration?

I was expecting this sim to have campaigns in theaters like Europe, Eastern Front, Pacific, The Med, etc. Is this a single player standalone game or made primarily for online play?

I would really like to converse with someone who fully understands how the sim is structured and can walk me through the confusion.

Russian in the pacific?

I've never had that.

Russian in russia I get all the time, but there's a line of text at the top of the screen in English, so I know what they've said.

Sounds to me as if you've been sold the Russian version.

That's odd. When I installed the software the first thing it asked for was the language in a drop down box. The default was English.

So, can someone give me a overview of what this sim is exactly? I thought I would be able to select a theater, then pilot, plane, etc. and fly a campaign. But what I'm seeing is all American and British planes and missions are in the Pacific. If I want to fly in Europe I can't fly as an American or British pilot from the looks of things.

I don't understand why you're getting Russian in a pacific mission, but yes, IL2 1946 is very much a stand alone single player game, although online flying is available and is outstanding. There are campaigns available for all air forces in the standard version so you should love it.

Did you install from a disc or download? Maybe you have a corrupt file either way, so I'd say disable your AV and re-install.

Also, if you're running windows 7, disable user account control, and don't install the game to a default directory. Create your own file for it and install the game to that file. If you're still running XP, ignore what I just said. :)

P.S. Always select 'run as administrator' when installing.

PPS, cross post sorry, there aren't any British or american european campaigns in the standard game, but community built campaigns are common. Try 'Mission4today.com' for downloadable campaigns and mods. The game has been going so long, it's a minefield, which will take a bit of researching. :)

PPPS. for campaigns, click 'pilot career' then click 'new' then select your country and take it from there.

Thanks for letting me know about the American campaigns. I tried another mission which did not have any radio chatter. I'll try to duplicate the Russian language experience.

I was able to configure my controls after discovering they were somehow detected with (-) negative settings so everything was reversed. Engine torque is rather pronounced at stock so I will definitely need to trim my controls.

All in all this sim is very impressive. I want to make it perfect now. LOL

It's still the best, most complete WW2 flight sim ever made and the missions that can be made in the "full mission builder" ensure that you will use this sim for years.

I should mention my past experience has been along the lines of European Air War (which I still play today). I got comfortable with the campaigns that try to recreate the air war over Europe.

Other WW2 flight sims I have:

B-17 Mighty Eighth
Combat Flight Simulator 2 & 3
EAW

I've been gaming since it all started. I probably have over 100 games installed on my computers right now from the mid-90's to the present. I play them in cycles or as my whims take me. I did install "Cliffs of Dover" and was stunned at the depth and detail. It will take some time getting used to everything there as well.

The Russians in the Pacific sounds odd... was it a quick mission that you generated yourself? It'd be easy to have that happen in there...

The campaign section does have campaigns for quite a few different areas but what ships with the game is really just kind of a base level for you to work with.

Head on over to Mission4Today.com and download some of the higher rated user generated campaigns. Surely you'll find a campaign suited to one of your interests... I was recently playing a fairly good one with Mustangs in the Pacific. It's not a new one either... called 'The Tokyo Pony Club'.

The messages should always be in the language of the air force you chose to fly with.

Yes. If it was quick mission builder, just click the drop-down arrow under the plane selection and choose USAAF instead of USSR. You'll have to do this for all the aircraft in the flight (if you have more than just yours).

Welcome aboard.. hit the Nugget's Guide in my sig for a little background on the sim. From your post you are no novice so some of it will not apply to you but some of it will be informative at least. To reverse the settings on our sticks just reconfigure it in the HOTASA section but start with the stick at the opposite end and cycle it. You might want to also consider deleting any unused key strokes in the default config that you do not want to use or re assigning the ones you do want to use when you have the time. Did you fully patch the sim up to 4.11.1?

Best thing is the help you will get there from like minded pilots either in chat or on Team Speak, Ventrillo even Roger Wilco if you go back that far :)

If you're in the quick mission builder, the first map is one of the pacific islands, I think.

As others have said, change the nationality of your flight. Click the black shiny button to the very right of the screen. I missed that for months when I started!

Also, try out the single missions. These have everything set up nicely.
