Hi All

First my system specs

XP64bit
Abit AV8 3rd eye
2x250gb WD HD's RAID
2x1gb Muskin Redline ddr500
2x4800 AMD64 Dual core
1xGeforce 7800GS GLH
1xXFI Music
Enermax 650 watt PSU

I am an Nvidia fan and have been through gf 4 ti4600, gf 6800 Ultra and lastly 7800GS GLH.

I wont mention the Voodoo cards I have had before Nvidia bought them out :)

OK
I'm obviously still on AGP but would not mind trying ATI when I upgrade to PCI express.

I'm wondering what your water looks like in IL2 1946 v4.091bm with ATI or Nvidia cards, the short movie below was made with the gf 4ti 4600 and all the later cards could emulate the shader3 animation.

So do the latest cards match this or better it ?

This is what I get with the current setup

Im wondering if ATI cards can get the water the same as this will make a difference in the new system specs.

Cheers.

Are you being facetious or supercilious ?

I was only asking for those that can help.

Cheers

I'm using a x1950xtx myself and the water looks practically real, white caps and all. No studdering on an FX-60 chip, just upgrade your gpu and maybe overclock your CPU a little to tide yourself over until BoB.

No he isn't. Would he get higher frames and be able to turn up some settings? Of course, but I ran this sim online with good settings and fast frames with this system a few years ago:

P4 2.8
Audigy 2 zs
2gb pc4400
6800Ultra
500w psu

He doesn't need to upgrade because your pc (or anyone else's) is faster or bigger. Especially as long as his runs what he wants with decent frames and IQ.

To answer his question, my buddy just got a 4870 and says IL2 is running smooth as butter with settings similar to what I run on my current system: 1680x1050, 8xAA, 16xAF, water=3 or 4, new type clouds, effects=2, 3dgunners =1, etc. Not sure which cat drivers he's running, but I'll ask.

Thunderbolt56: please don't get upset with me, but can you really run with <1680x1050, 8xAA, 16xAF, water=3 or 4, new type clouds, effects=2, 3dgunners =1, etc.> settings on your specified system? I find that hard to believe, speciall regarding 8xAA and 16xAF and water or 3 on that resolution. I run on water 1 and i can forget about AA and AF settings on radeon 1800xt 512MB hands down :>

I'm sorry for the OT, i really am. I can post an image, but like i said, i have water on 1, so, it is nice, but not as nice as on posted image/movie.

No, that was a misunderstanding. I ran IL2 just fine a few years ago on the specified system. Back then I ran 1024x768, 2xAA, 4xAF, Landscape=excellent (perfect offline only), effects=1

I run the settings I mentioned in the previous post on my current system and rarely ever drop below 50 frames. I was merely stating that you don't need a lightning-quick system to run this 5 year old sim.

No he isn't.

Irony is often best conveyed when context and inflection can be expressed in order to avoid misunderstanding. In this case, yes, it escaped me like a greased pig at a Sunday afternoon church dance.

In that vein, simply disregard the portion of my post that relates to your Ironic post and focus on the latter portion that is relevant to the original poster's question. ;)

I agree with Thunderbolt..

Alpha that rig looks decent... I mena if you wanted to upgrade just for PCIE.. it is doable.. especially since you aren't struck looking for a 939 mobo like I was.. You said that movie was made with the 4600? Why not the 7800?

In any case.. you shoyuld be able to get a better PCIE card for @ 2 yards.

Just a point of reference, here is the water in Silent Hunter IV.

I didn't make a newer 7800 movie because the water looks the same as with the 4600, the 4600 wouldn't handle the v4.09b1m with increased distance and the towns etc, the 7800gs is the GLH version (Goes Like Hell) and it obviously out performs the previous 2 cards I had, but the water remains the same, which is why I was asking if ATI produces the same water effects I have with the Nvidia cards past and present.

This system is over 3 years old now and I always upgrade every 3 years as a matter of course, just that this time I wanted to "see" some ATI v Nvidia action regarding the water effects, some screen shots or film clip would be a great help to me.
If there's no visible difference between the new cards it opens up a lot more choices and price ranges.

@ El Aurens
Any pics from IL2 ?

does that mean it doesn't escape them then... in an ironic way ?

Ok here are a couple of screens I had in my directory.

Version 4.08m

Water = 4

BFG Nvidia 7800GS OC AGP
Intel P4 3.0gig on Abit IC7G board
2 gigs Mushkin Level1 Black ram.

Not too shabby for an older machine IMHO.
