Turn off S3TC texture compression in the IL2 setup video option. Set it to off to eliminate this problem.

If it ain't that, try setting Catalyst A.I. to Standard

4S Nero,

I'm thinking of picking up this card...how are you finding it so far (and at what settings)? What's the IQ like? FPS?

Any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Hedge

What fixed the problem?

Probably Catalist AI.. with last few releases of drivers AI caused nothing but problems on my 3870X2... And not only in IL2. Question to original poster, what OS are you using? XP or Vista?

Hi Hedge,

I upgraded from an 8800GTX to an HD 4870 recently. In IL2 the only problem I have is the one Nero showed. It is fixable by turning texture compression to none but at the cost of some pauses as textures load after the map has finished loading. Overall the experience in IL2 is extremelly fluid and none of the higher GPUs from the past two years have FPS problems in IL2. I have reported this issue to ATI/AMD but don't expect anything done about it (after all it isn't the latest POS FPS).

In other games/sims the HD 4870 totally outperforms the 8800GTX. Armed Assault has more details enabled and is smoother/faster to boot. FSX allows for higher settings on the water for no FPS hit. In short I can enable more AA/AF with more details set in games for better FPS.

All in all the 4870 is a great card and that means better choice for us gamers/simmers. While the GT260 and GT280 are also great cards I would never recommend them because of what Nvidia did. The fact that NVidia where happy to massivley overprice theses cards because they assumed ATI/AMD were not going to be in the running tells how much they appreciate us (ie fleece the fools). Here in the UK the GT280 was released for £480 including delivery, that is pure and simple daylight robbery! They would still be that price if Nvidia still had the monopoly on high performance GPUs.

Hi all.
I upgraded from an Ati 1950pro 512 to an HD 4870 and this card is great. Is a little bit hot but with new AtiTryTool the problem can be solved easaly. The FPS are always very good with the exception of a low fly over Berlin, now i'm testing and seems the new map of 4.09 runs better then older map. The driver are not optimised and probably need to wait next release. To ICDP: where i can disable Texture Compression?

Hi Nero, what version of core DLL are you using? Ones that came with the game, or the latest ones, if the latest ones, then from what date? I am talking about il2core.dll and il2corep4.dll

Yea, you can try that. Look at this thread, post by KIA: http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?p=37831#post37831

Those are the latest ones. Rename the ones you have to something else, and place new ones in, see if it helps.

Yes this happens rarely for me too. I can't catch it on a screenshot to report it to AMD/ATI but it isn't a big problem it is so rare. The drivers will mature and it will be caught.

Me too rarely. We only need to wait new driver.

I'm very happy for 196 euros this card is the best buy.

ICPD/4S_Nero - thanks ever so much for the replies gents!

I went ahead and pressed the 'buy' button - one HD4870 is now inbound for the measly price of $269.99 CDN! Lovely!!

You;re welcome hedge. Be sure to use drivercleaner to remove your old rivers (if Nvidia) before installing ATI drivers. I hope (know) you will enjoy the card and it is a great price too.

Going back to the texture issues if you set your aa and af in the standard settings using the slider and apply. Then set your aa and af then apply those it seems to clear up those texture problems, it did for me.

I am using two 4870 in crossfire with every thing maxed out to maxium getting frames from 70 - 1000.
There are problems with that control panel, took me a while to figure it out.

I would go with ATI at the mo. The 4800 series are A1.
