I'm extremely bored and need to write something completely useless :P

So, the question is simple:
WHEN???

I expect some original replies and not the usual "2 weeks" :P

Based on a general feeling after spending to much time here - my answer is Q2 2009 (+/- two weeks (ie +/- a quarter or two)). Either that, or never... As there are some clear indications of work being done on the Korea sim based on SoW:BoB I have the bold proposal that it may even arrive first - to iron out the bugs for a smooth release of the "main" product... I know, that sounds weird but why not? People are not that fuzzy about correct representation of every bridge and harbor in Korea so why not.

My guess is that the thing they are working on now is to integrate a strong massively multiplayer component which is the only way to make real money on PC games. Just look at the Titanic of the PC gaming cash cows (excluding Sims) - World of Warcraft. 10 million people paying for the base game and then fresh money every month... Maybe they release Korea as a "normal" game like IL2 with small dedicated servers to try it out - and then release SoW:BoB as a pay-to-play (+ the normal IL2 "small servers" and single player) solution with hundreds of players in the skies over London. Just dreaming...

Just think of it... every day at 21.00 CET all german bomber crews take off from France with escorts forming up to attack the target of the day... Mmm...

A famous writer in Sweden has the following incription on his tomb stone:

"Here lies the ashes of a man who had the habit of postponing everything until tomorrow. Though he bettered on his final day and really died 31st of January 1972."

Modifying that with "two weeks" instead of "tomorrow" - will we get to know the real date when it dies?

----

Well, for those interested in reading animal carcasses etc - what do we make of the following statement from Gamespot regarding the annual report of Ubisoft (released a month ago or so):

"Today's report also revealed that Ubisoft has several all-new games up its sleeve. "Going forward, 2008-09 is set to be another record year for Ubisoft," CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "We now have 14 multimillion-unit-selling franchises and will be launching 5 new IPs during the period as well as new brands in the casual games segment." (Emphasis added.)
A slide presentation that accompanyied the report named four of the all-new IPs--H.A.W.X., EndWar, Shaun White Snowboarding (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6144222.html), and the recently launched Haze (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/haze/review.html)--with the fifth being identified only as an "unannounced title." The same slide also revealed that two as-yet-untitled installments in existing franchises will also be released during the year, alongside Far Cry 2, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, Splinter Cell: Conviction, the just-announced new Prince of Persia (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6189970.html), and a new Anno game."

EDIT: Link to full story http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/tomclancysendwar/news.html?sid=6191456&mode=news

Is IL2 one of the 14? If multi-million sales count the whole series has sold in that magniutude... Is SoW:BoB one of the "two as-yet-untitled installments in existing franchises will also be released during the year"? SoW:BoB has been titled but that was so long ago (and no traces are left on ubi.com), it could be renamed... Fortunately not with the Clancy name as he has only written modern stories? Please don't tell me he has written some WW2 story ;)

It's interesting to speculate - and damn what a waste of time :)

I am starting to think .......never ! I am hoping that Knights of the sky comes out soon. I have been playing this game for 7 years and it is a little long in tooth.

What other”game”, read simulation; have you enjoyed for the last seven years? Do you want Sow to be a bit long in the tooth in one or seven years from the day of release?

You just give the team on 1C the time and respect to make a product that they feel worthy of our wait and I am quite sure that you will not be disappointed.

Patience!

Two years over time and over budget. Something went very wrong somewhere. I do not think it will be released ever. I have zero expectation of ever seeing SoW. A shame, but there it is.

KotS on the other hand...

Feuerfalke

I second that. KotS was announced over a year before SoW and since we've seen regular updates from this well renown commercial software-developers, it's much more likely we will see KotS before SoW, even though for KotS it's not even clear if they will have a distributor.

No reason to be bored.

Just go over to the http://allaircraftarcade.com/forum/index.php

Check out the forums and maybe mess around with some of the mods.

I particularly enjoy the mod that allows you to go between 4.08 and 4.09.

There are plenty of mods that will keep your interest for next couple months at least.

I know these mods maybe a NO NO on this forums, but I think the 1C:Maddox should realize they haven't done much for us (pitiful as we are) users for at least 6 months.

So, instead of patches that Oleg would have to be rolling out to lower the thunder from users, the mods are a nice diversion for users. Oleg has already stated he's done with the IL2 series, which is cool I guess.

I'm not trying to start an issue with 1C:Maddox in providing the linke to mods site. I just think in all fairness to Oleg's dedicated and loyal fan base he should wink ;) at the mods and move on to the bigger and better things of BOB SOW.

I certainly won't be distracted from buying a copy of the BOB SOW when it is released...by IL2 series mods

Nearmiss, I hope you don't get banned for revealing the location of the mod website. :(

Now that the pure hysteria has subsided a bit, I'm sure many can appreciate what enormous scope and potential there now is for what might well be the last great WW2 flight sim ever made.

For me, the added content and greater levels of realism that I've been able to get into my offline game means that I love this sim more now, than I have ever done in the past. ;)

Yesterday I was shot down online by a Me.210 on a locked server. I think this hysteria doesn't come out of thin air and I would remove the link - especially on this forum.

Wow, Oleg should get some of these boys onboard, their mods come thick and fast, and it sounds like he could do with a hand.

Guys... I'm an old salt. I've be a diehard IL2 simmer since IL2 ver 1.0 I can't remember how many years ago that has been. LOL

I've bought every copy of every IL2 sim, and gifted them to many friends.

After all my loyal years and contributions to the IL2 community of users I believe I should be allowed passage on a little thing like a site link. ;)

I'm not trying to stir trouble. Oleg knows he is pretty well done with the IL2 series. I'm sure it is frustrating for him to see his baby (IL2) get plundered by mods that... to his thinking are problems. Honestly, I love the maps, but that is about it for me.

I'll still be first in line to buy Oleg's new BOB, and I'll probably gift it to a half dozen friends in the first six months of release.

I'm a fan, but not a brown-noser fan boy.

Actually, my hope for Oleg and this new Il-2 modding business is that a commercial developer will see the scope that the game still has and put down cash to license the engine. That way we win, and so does MG. ;)

Feuerfalke

Honestly I think that once SoW is released 3rd party developers rather tend to use the option to model planes for this game, rather than sticking to a 10 year old engine. IL2 has many possibilities, but most of them are really scratching the edge and like the multi-engined planes need a lot of scripting to keep them flying.

With a more modular and realistic engine that allows to model custom planes like SoW I doubt many people will try to make a fortune out of IL2.

I think 1C better start working 16 hour days so this game can be finished before this X-mas. Come on guys its going to make you all millionaires whats the holdup?

Ala13_Kokakolo
06-05-2008, 02:23 PM
Millionaires? If u think the efford and the money invested and compare the number of copies sold to lets say... GTA series or PES you will realise Combat Flight Sims has far less gamers.

1C, take all the time you need. Make a good solid sim that made me play FOR FREE (minus one or two per year add on i will gratefully pay) the next 10 years (as you already did with IL2 series.

Feathered_IV
06-05-2008, 03:28 PM
No, don't take all the time you need. You will go bankrupt. You are two years over time and over budget. Better get something out soon or you are ruined.

I will patiently wait as long as it takes, but what you said was said last year, if not the year before.
Oleg knows how much money he has to work with, and what will hurt him and his outfit by taking how much time.
I have said many times before that Oleg will release BoB when he is ready, and that time will be when it is finished to HIS standard, and we all know that his standards are high.
