View Full Version : New patch: is the Processaffinity mask the reason for mixed results??

The new patch is to use all four cores or rather more cores than now. Has anyone been able to confirm this? My four cores seem to be at the same load as before...
Now, I seem to remember a long time ago that Luthier said we could experiment with the Processaffinity mask setting in the conf.ini (tells the game which cores to use for game play) and maybe this is the reason for these mixed results across these boards??? This change in the conf.ini was made before this patch obviously and for those who did change the Processaffinity mask settings (me included) this new patch will seem to give less FPS maybe??!.. Can this be the reason for the mixed results on the boards here?
Some people here are claiming alot higher FPS and others, me included have alot less FPS
I remember that I changed something in the conf.ini for the Processaffinity mask. Maybe I should revert back to the original setting in there but I just cannot remember what the original number was?!? Anyone??
So for people with FPS increase what is your ProcessAffinity mask setting in the conf.ini??

The reason behind the differences in performance reports are under my opinion :
- Dual cores / Quad cores.
- 1 GB card / above of 1 GB.
Because the key of the patch is the multicore optimization (CPU) in the graphic engine and the new texture management (GPU memory).
But yes, is recommended remove the affinity configuration, it is not used by default in the game.

Hi, i am not at my pc, so I didn´t try yet, but id would be a good idea to remove afinity mask from conf.iny and then try the patch.

Interesting. I am also on Phenom II X4 (3.4 GHz) and with a different NVIDIA card (no ProcessAffinityMask in config) - and I have no FPS boost whatsoever. So clearly, FPS issues are graphics card related.

It could mean you are already limited by graphics settings. I have to check when I come back. Because previously I could reduce the settings to minimum and FPS would´t be better. I hope this is improved and I will see an FPS difference between graphics settings.

I asked Luthier directly about multicore support in the new graphics engine. He said 4 cores or more CPU's should see considerable improvement in FPS, dual cores will also see improvements just not as big as if you have 4+ cores. There is nothing in the patch notes about altering the conf.ini ProcessAffinity line and why should there be? It's a modern game engine, it's supposed to automatically detect how many cores are available and use them, I don't think ProcessAffinity does anything ATM.

AA which seems to work now may be a reason for mixed results also.

The thing is that Radeon 5770 is supposed to be worse than GeForce GTX 460.

I know, but both of you didn´t state what are your graphics settings. If he uses low graphics settings and you high, he could see more FPS due to better CPU utilisation, whereas you may already be graphically limited..then try to lower the settings. Just one possible cause of action. Of course I don´t say it is definitely this way.

Good point, I imagine many of us have the AA turned up and it was not using any fps before this patch.

my 2600k uses all 4 cores, but all in all Clod uses only about 20% of my total cpu power, average about 8% while just flying, so all the tasks could run on one core, if the one core was fast enough... any lag u get will be videocard related with a fast cpu...
also its not the amount of memory the videocard has, its the SPEED of the memory and the SPEED of the GPU
yep the latency of memory access, btw having more than 1gig is still a good thing

what im trying to say is... if your card has less than 1gb of memory, its probably too slow in the first place... so only the speed matters...
during the past years CPU/GPU have become so powerful that the computation rates have outpaced the memory access rates and if you have a not so good pipeline you can easily struggle, you have to do it in a very efficient manner and access the right texture at the right time or things may get out of hand and you waste cycles.

Well I've got no performance gain.
The game was running smooth before and is doing the same now.
No hickups at all i'm between 45 and 78 fps when looking backwards in start there is a slight improvement was 17 fps and is now 24 fps.
Some strange things are happening the throttle( a slaugh on it) in the 109 E3 is sort of transparent.same sort of thing is happening in the hurry but now on the steering collum as there is a flickering texture under de word closed.
The throttle action is changed now ideling will make me move forward at some speed already.
In landing there is a notisable ground effect keeping the plane in the air ( to) long
Same effect is not there while taking off.
The Britsh planes seem to swerve alot wile firing trowing of the aim.
The flickering shadows are still pressent and annoying :)
No game chrashes in several hours play, but then i dint have them to often anyhow:)
I'm still using the RAM disk wich gave me the highest performance boost.
the game is is running slick and gives a nice impression of the channel war before The Battle of Britain its self.
Cheers.

I have a quad core 17 930 factory clocked to 4.0Ghz, and see no improvement in the FPS.

Same boost and same ProcessAffinityMask.
Also, maybe AVG driver makes difference: I am still using driver Beta Nvidia 285.38 (fited for BF3). But my card is a GTX 470, not in the top, but my fps doubled...

I heaven't manage find it in my config, so seems a bit different from user to user. WOnder how come???
What was really confusing to me was that the general oppinion pre-alpha seemed top be that the hurricane and the 1A spit were a bit to slow than it was supposed to, and the 2A needed a bit of lower speed.
No idea how come it ended up with all red planes across got such a juicy speed reduction.

You don't want the line in your config file, that line means you are using an old version of the config.ini file.

I've tried it all ways with my system. After applying the patch I had the ProcessAffintyMask line applied in the rts section. After reading this thread I commented it out (no difference) then I removed the line all together (again no difference). So do we need it or not???
I have not found any improvements with my system at all with the patch as a lot of others have (some have even found things worse). Looks like the team still has a lot of work to do. It will be interesting to see what their annalysis of the different results are, as all of us were hoping for the improvements that they were talking about. The improvements certainly haven't happened for a big percentage of us.

actually while we are at it... where do i reinstall the game? I delete it like any normal game i assume but i cant seem to find.anywhere in Steam where i can download the game again.
What I did to reinstall:
First I disabled Steam Cloud Sync (www.google.com/search?q=disable+steam+cloud) (I did it for all games, but it will probably work if you only do it on CloD).
Next I went into 'My Documents' folder and renamed the '1C SoftClub' folder so when I reinstall all the files are replaced (you can do this without reinstalling as well and the game will rebuild the directory. ) All your config files (the hours you spent configuring your controller) are in this directory so you don't want to lose these files.
Next, (In Steam) right click on CloD in the Steam library menu and select "Delete Local Content".
http://bs.beckament.net/files_pub/FlightSim/IL2CloD/reinstall/reinstall-01.png
Then select 'Delete'.
http://bs.beckament.net/files_pub/FlightSim/IL2CloD/reinstall/reinstall-02.png
Wait a while....
Close Steam.
(I rebooted my computer, but it may not have been necessary).
At this point, start Steam and double check that your steam cloud is still disabled. ;)
In Steam, right click on 'CloD' in the library menu and select 'Install Game' (in the right pane)
http://bs.beckament.net/files_pub/FlightSim/IL2CloD/reinstall/reinstall-03.png
Steam is going to re-download everything (so if you have limited bandwidth maybe you should try a different fix first!!!)
Hopefully That did it! :D
Install Problems After Uninstall: (I'm afraid you may need to do this if you don't see the game in the Steam Library, RickRuski...)
If you are having install problems after uninstalling you can delete 'ClientRegistry.blob' from the main Steam directory (while Steam is not running). https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7241-EYON-2343
This will force a re-validation of Steam so you will need access to the email you used with Steam as you will have to re-validate the account!!!!

Correct, the affinity mask setting was removed from conf.ini along with a lot of other left-over parameters from the development phase. It was a few patches back, somewhere around May.
I think Luthiers FAQ (http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/showthread.php?t=19819) needs to be updated... Number 11 in particular.

I did my duty, tried the Alpha patch, gave up after 2 days of problems, sent in my logs and dumps, and now uninstalled the patched version going back to official on Steam...
I appreciate all the help and info given her,e,
even though some of the disappointment came through from me, I appreciate the effort of all to make COD work.. but I can't help anymore,,
I await a better patch.. hopefully in reasonable amount of time... whatever that is..

just for clarification.
do I need to set the process affinity mask in the conf ini or is the game handling the cores automatically?
If I do need to set them up how to do it?
In IL-2 it is supposed to goe in the [rts] section of the conf.ini.
i.e. Dualcore:
[rts]
ProcessAffinityMask=3
http://forum.sturmovik.de/index.php?topic=982.0
Processor Variable Setting for usage of all cores:
Dual-cores 3
Tri-cores 7
Quad-cores & I5s 15
I7s 255
16-core/8-core hyper-threaded (untested) 65535
Optimal for Multi-core Processors
Dual-cores 3
Tri-cores & i5s 7
Quad-cores 15
I7s 85
