Hi,

I am new to the game...so have more questions than fun with it right now.

I have IL-2 1946 4.11M...it has a crap load of campaigns...single missions.
Training is all video's, rather than interactive, so where do I start?
Is there a campaign for beginners?

All I seem to do is crash on take off or if I do manage to take off spin uncontrollably til I crash in the middle of combat.
So I guess its safe to say I have mastered the crashing part of the game! :-P
I dont seem to be able to catch up to bombers (in the RAF @ Singapore mission) so not sure if I am doing something wrong there.
What do radiators do? Does it get rid of the "Engine Overheating" messages?

Any sort of explanation would be great.

Cheers
Gecks

Which aircraft are you trying to fly?
And yes, radiators keep the engine cool and will thus make that message go away.

Well.....Hurricane for the Singapore mission.....tried the BF109.
I know IL-2 has a lot of expansions included, but where should I start?

Hi Gecko,

I am quite a noob myself, but you may want to check the following links:

http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/613676-ok-this-f-n-game-SUX!!!!-Forums

http://www.joint-ops.com/php2/index.php

AND: Practice, Practice, Practice
or more accurately in my case:
Take off, crash, take off, get shot down, take off, stall and crash and so on...

I would start with the difficulty options. Select the ones you want, deselect the ones you don't. After all of the years, I still have some deselected (I don't play online).

For a career, I would pick the Russian fighter career, you can change the aircraft in a particular campaign, but it might be best to try them out as they come the first time through. Or you might pick the russian fighter career (one of them has an asterisk, I forget which), which is the original Sturmovik fighter career, that one you can't pick the aircraft, there are about sixty missions in that, the first one has you following a more or less circular flightpath in a LaGG-3, it was the original introduction so it's probably a good way to start.

For an easy introduction, i'd start with a 109f4 in 41/42 Russia.

One of the easiest planes to fly, and better than everything you'll meet, after that progress to something harder.

I would do a lot of reading first.. books or net (probably easier) ;)
One has to understand that as in real life, to become a pilot.. you have to study for a 'degree' (seriously - this is not a hit-it-with-a-hammer profession).. this game teaches you that.

I believe this is the definitive and most comprehensive guide for people starting the game: http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/610610-A-Nugget-s-Guide-To-Getting-Off-The-Ground-Forums. The formatting is a bit messed up since that forum underwent a change recently, but it's not too hard to read.

My thoughts precisely.

Yeah had a quick read....the Nugget guide is great! Going through the practice stuff now.
Thanks for the advice everyone!

Thanks for the nuggets guide link. I am going through it now and trying to practice taking off and landing. I have made 5 attempts of landing, twice I died, twice I wrecked the plane but survived the landing and once I got it right, I think it will definitely be baby steps with this game.

Is there a vsynch option in the game as I didn't see it in the options?

Also as well as the nuggets guide I have seen a thread on another forum of one players ideal keyboard control layout and many agreed that it was really good. Does anyone know the one I mean?

Got to it late, but start flying a bomber like the IL-2 if you want to learn. Flying something like a Lavochkin, or lighter frames like the Mig or unstable Airacobra is a bad way to start. You already need to have a steady hand for more responsive control surfaces with these planes, so flying something heavier like a bomber is recommended. Even the Hurricane is a good plane to start with.
