The recent re-release of Microsofts Combat Flight Simulator 3 by Ubisoft under their Exclusive brand could indicate two things. One Microsoft wants to revitalise the branding of their sim for a potential release of Combat Flight Simulator 4. Or final conclusive proof that they have abandoned the franchise.
I am betting on the second option which leaves SOW with only a potential threat from BoB2 Wings of Victory publishers using the Merlin engine.
Lets face it, they are on patch 2.07 and Bob 2 is still not a credible fight sim.
And this is not intended to be an insult to those hard workers who have made it barely passible.
GREAT GRAPHICS and then you look at your wing man and he is bouncing arround the sky like he has ADT... Simpily put you lose total immersion and realise you are flying a sim.
So I doubt whether Oleg's silence has anything to do with potential opposition, but is in fact a marketing instruction from 1c and ubisoft. Why, who knows? But I will wait and see. Hopefully we are all pleasantly surprised,

This used to be one of my pet peeves in BOB WOV but the issue has been fixed.

Not true, this has been fixed long ago.
IMHO immersion-wise BOB2:WoV > IL2 by far:
Dynamic campaign. Clickable Cockpits. 6DoF. Fights with hundred and more planes. AI lightyears ahead of IL2's one.
Need I say more?
Ok, you can flame me now.

Not going to flame you but I have patch 2.07 and my wing man still jumps about like he has ADT???? Maybe it is a setting thing. I was not knocking the game I was just pointing out the limitations of the Merlin Engine.

I'm a huge fan of BOB WOV and the AI is good but no better than IL-2's. The AI not being able to see thru clouds is a myth and I could carry on with a great many issues in both sims. Hopefully the next generation Merlin and SOW engines will improve on both.

Seriously?
What reason would I have, but here is a site selling the game in South Africa, if you look closely you will find the Ubisoft logo on the box. Not as clear as the German one but please, if you need more proof...
Google.com is a great tool.

Let me stress again, I have BoB 2 WOV. It is a great sim, I even own the original Rowan's incarnation.
But compared to IL2 it is just not quite there and this is because it is not a flight simulator but a massive strategic simulation of the Battle of Britain that allows you to fly into the very heart of the action.
It is great, I fly it alot but no, it is no Il2, if you have ever dropped down low over the countryside you will know what I mean.
And so using the Merlin Engine will not make a better sim than SOW. It might make a better sim than BoB2 WOV. And yes I will buy it when it comes out as well.
But then I like anything that says Joystick required :)

Must admit, "Exclusive" games by Ubisoft are very unbranded. No homepage and no mention on Ubisoft site at all, even when they are selling their own games. But every few months all these little gems become available at real bargain prices.
What is more laughable is they are selling pacific fighters, il2 forgotten battles, a gold edition comprising Il2 forgotten battles, pacific fighters and Lomac(lock on) plus they then have the exclusive range which sells Il2 1946 for one tenth the price and lock on even cheaper all on the same shelves at some stores...

Yeah if you look close at that you'll pay more for PF, FB, FB+AE gold then you would for just one copy of 1946 and they don't really tell you which is which, for the uneducated you might think you need them all.

il2 1946 is tops.Looking forward to SOW-BOB. 1c and olga have the best combat flight sim on the market.
One thing and the biggest thing for me is that the AI see through clouds.
This has been an issue from the first IL-2 and IL2 FB then PF and 1946
Just hope that its is addressed in BOB

Impressive. I take it that CFS3 planes are no longer 3 times the correct size? That and the ludicrous stalls was why I threw away CFS many moons ago.

The other Bob is quite credible in many respects. It has a lot of fans and a long community history with plenty of volunteer labour involved, so I would watch out if I were you.
I have a copy of the original (although I fly Il-2 more often). I find it amusing that they are adding a tiger-moth (and just after Oleg announced it for his sim).
The CFS issues is a bit more terrifying. Especially considering they now have a copy of Oleg's sources code and data files (which would save them a lot of time).

OFF is definately not CFS3. Much , much better. When Phase 3 is released it will be very good indeed. With Phase 3 there will be very little of CFS3 left in. Until KOTS comes out it will tide any WWI flyers over nicely. See here:

Clickable Cockpits.
Clickable cockpits are entirely over-rated IMHO.
They are counter intuitive, and in no way replicate the control manipulations required by a real pilot. A real, well trained pilot will simply reach for the desired control and use it. In a sim with clickable cockpits you are forced to change your view, fumble with a mouse, and maybe it will "grab" the control on the first try, but maybe not, all the while you are not looking out of the perspex and more than likely you are seconds for augering in.
A waste of programming time.
I want a combat simulator, not a control procedure simulator.

Whilst I too have certain reservations about clickable cockpits...surely simulating the procedures a pilot had to make during combat, simulating pilot workload, simulating the possibility of getting things wrong...of flying your plane in a sub-optimal way...simulating the risk of damaging your own engine by improper management or stressing your airframe...the possibility of creating a less stable/less agile plane by feeding fuel from the incorrect fuel tanks etc etc...all under the stress of combat is what makes a Combat Flight Simulator - if i want to merely point my guns at a baddie and go badda...badda...badda I can play Blazing Angels...for me realism is where its at :)

The only thing about the CFS series that I miss is the ability to select from all the available fuel tanks. With the MS "game" I ended up using keyboard commands for RPM and Mixture control, because the Mouse/Hand didn't give me the sort of fine control I needed.
The IL2 series is a work of art, and BOB is going to be even better!

Why not combine the control methods -> cockpit clickable but you can also use key - commands that you can map to your hotas.
That means more possibilities to control the plane and with the hotas you are not worse off like now in il2.

In a sim that already has the CPs then great.. it isnt for me but.... IMO n the case of a newer sim... I agree with El... clickable pits are a waste of time... assignable commands are much better IMO.. With the HOTAS becoming more common...

Mouse clickable cockpits switches is a pain-in-the-*ss in BOB WOV...BUT mapping those switches to a Hotas is very immersive.
