View Full Version : what do I need to play 1946?
I saw some youtube videos of IL2 and it looks great. I haven't played a flight sim since Aces of the Pacific in 1992.
I want to fly P-80's, ME-262's, GO229s, Shindens & Kikkas against B29's. IL2 1946 looks like this is possible.
What do I need to do this? do I need to by the original IL2 and then the 1946 expansion? Where do I buy them?
What kind of hardware do I need to play?
Thanks!!
And How should we install the updates?
Do we need them all or just the last one?

You need to buy Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 - it has ALL addons in. When you install it, it's version 4.07m. You've got to download free DLC patches: 4.08m, 4.09m, 4.10m and then 4.101m. Google them. 4.09m+ patches are and will be available here, in Daidalos Team's section. And there is no Kikka in the game - these are Me 262s with Japanese markings. And if you're interested, go to sas1946.com and try mods. You will find instructions how to install them there. I recommend you UP3.0 + DBW - I'm using it and it works just fine.

Alternatively, there is the mega-patch (http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=4088) that patches the stock 1946 v4.07 to v4.101m in one go. However, the download is nearly 1GB in size, so you'll need to use WinRar or other archiving application. Windows' WinZip archiving can't handle files that large. Obviously, you'll need a fairly fast and reliable internet connection as well.
Your timing is good. A new patch (v4.11) with a lot of significant improvements, particularly to the AI, is due to be released very soon.

Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe were my last sims before I got on the IL-2 bandwagon too :)
IL-2 is a fantastic sim. It will take a bit of getting used to compared to those old classics but it's absolutely superb. No Kikka or Shinden in the normal game but I believe the are with some mod packages. Still the list of aircraft is immense including many of the types available in those old games.
As others have said... IL-2 1946 is the one to get plus the patches since then. Ignore any that call themselves "IL-2 Complete Edition" as they aren't really complete.
ive downloaded and patched to 4.09m so far. worked first go!! this game is out of control the graphics are fantastic. I can't believe its from 2006!!! am flying an ME163 against 16 B29's just like they did in 1946 :)

This sim is actually from 2001 .... Forgotten Battles came out in 2002 and it was an expansion with expanded code for the original IL2 . IL2 1946 has everything from Forgotten Battles on in one DVD. Over the years there have been loads of patches ... all free.. The sim was cracked and modded but that's another story. STOCK the sim is still fantastic!! It is a great sim still and well worth the almost 10 years and hundreds of dollars I have spent over the pats decade on PC upgrades..
Welcome aboard....
wow after playing this game its very realistic and challenging. with all the realism options turned on i can barely make it through a mission without getting killed, just like WWII i suppose :)
here is my favorite landing so far. missed it by that much.

and there is nothing more fun than doing a hard turn in an ME163 and having the plywood wing snap off.

Hi and welcome, kpii! :-)
From your picture (funny one!) I see, that you don't run the game on the highest grafic settings.
Just in case: what are your computer specs? Maybe we can help to increase your fun wit hthe game. ;-)
any help to increase the graphics would be good! what is an example screenshot that shows the top end capability of the graphics on a high end machine?

I was refering mostly to the way, the water looks on your screenshot. I suppose you are running the game in DirectX mode instead of OpenGL (which is recommended), you can have water look much more 3D and realistic:

Pics of the modded game may lead to wrong expectations, as long as he flies the stock game. ;-)
