So, I've got a serious problem with ToW 2. I bought the game yesterday and I've installed it today several times on 2 Systems (XP and 7) on the same PC (physical), but it still wont work...

System:
Win XP/7
Nvidia GTX470
i7-860
4GB Ram

Steps to reproduce the Bug:
Start the game.
Start the Campaign or the Tutorial.

Describing the Bug:
The game seems to load, but when it has finished, a black screen appears for about 0.5 seconds. Then is crashes to the desktop. No error message.

Several logs:

I figured out, that there are several quite similar reports in this forum, but the difference, that i noticed first in the ToW 2 log is (quite at the bottom):

*** FAILURE *** [SYSTEM] Main loop: null
java.lang.NullPointerException

Maybe this could be an advise. I hope this helps. PS: I have shortened the dxdiag log, becuase there is a character limitation in this forum.

Thank you for your help,
Ravenbox

Hi
I see you have 8 cores CPU, is it with HT enabled? I remember some people ran into problems with the game with more than 4 cores available or with HT technology enabled. I would suggest the following:

1) Set game process affinity to 1 or 2 cores in the task manager. To do this run the game, in main menu press Ctrl+Alt+Del, invoke the task manager, find game processess (Kursk1943.bin and Kursk1943.exe or Africa1943.bin and Africa1943.exe since you said you have ToW2), right-click on each and set affinity to cores 0 and 1 or only core 1 (uncheck other cores). Then Alt-Tab back to game and try to load a mission again.

If you bought the game on Steam, you can do this easier (read here (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1433109)).

2) If this doesn't help, temporarily turn off HyperThreading in BIOS to see if this helps.

Nope, sorry, didn't help.
Still getting the same "error" (better said log), BUT maybe I found another hint. I can't change the options while not ingame. So, there is a options.exe in the ToW 2 folder, where you can set things like video mode and so on...you will know.
I can set the options as I want, but when I hit "OK" nothing happens. I can just exit it and all the options won't be saved. I also tried to run it as an Admin, but still no reaction. Maybe this could help you, I hope so.

Btw: My executeable wasn't named africa.exe or .bin, but ToW2.exe.

Greetings,
Ravenbox

What is the name of your game, ToW2: Africa 1943? Is it Steam version or not?

Try installing it not to 'Progam files' folder, but some another folder you have full access rights to (it doesn't save options because it lacks writing rights to its own folder). For example, try installing it to My Documents\ToW2 folder. Then run options.exe and set stuff like resolution, see if it saves.

Run the game, then exit it and look for users folder inside the game folder (it should be created after first launch). Inside it there should be several config files, one of them should contain string 'Compatibility mode = 0' or something (i don't remember exactly). Set it to 1 and try loading the mission.

I figured out, what the problem was...The copy protection. It was pure luck, because I found a solution to another Problem, caused by the protection and found out, that there was a file missing in my Windows directory, which was used by the protection system. Well, I tryed it out without any copy protection and it works fine... :D Thanks for the help!

Hello, can you please explain what exactly you did to get it to work?

Hi all,

i got the same issue as ravenbox. Game ToW2 Africa (version 1.3.0; retail) had been started as admin, but after selecting campaign/tutorial it crashed to desktop.

Options are not available in start menu and while changing options in game it crashes to desktop without saving changes.

I got another issue, too. While installing the game i got the message that microsoft .net framework 2.o could not be installed due to incompatibility with my win 7 64-bit OS.

I downloaded it from the official site, but could not install the 32-bit version and i got the message that the 64-bit version of frameworks is already part of my OS while trying to install the 64-bit version of frameworks.

I tried out both suggestions of Sneaksie without any success.

Anyone knows what Ravenbox had been talking about the missing file needed by the copy protection?

If the game crashes when you alter any options it's definitely an access rights problem.
Sometimes running the game being an admin user is not enough, Windows will still block write access for the game to its folder. What you need to do is right-click on the game executable (Africa1943.exe or ToW2.exe) or on the game shortcut and choose 'Run as Administrator' in context menu.
Another thing that may interfere with the game operation is anti-virus software. Check that it doesn't block the game; add the game folder to list of exceptions in your AV software so it won't interfere.

I did both things already. Running the ToW2.exe as admin as you told me and turning off all anti-virus software.

Well, with crash down to desktop i mean following:

I can run the game and select tutorial or campaign.

Then the loading sceen appears and the map is loading (red circle is building up). After the that (red circle is total) screen turns black for 1 sec and i am back on desktop.

For me it seens to be the same problem like Ravenbox had.

Did you try turning off hyperthreading and setting affinity to 1 core?
Run options.exe and turn off sound completely (uncheck it). Make sure that setting is saved (run options.exe just like the game, 'run as administrator').
Is your copy of ToW2 Africa released by Peter Games? We should receive it soon and we'll try to determine what's up.

Hi

I've got the same problem ctd every time a mission starts.

game log:

...
java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.maddox.sound.SoundListRegistry.soundPreRender( Unknown Source)
...

so i set sound to "0" inside
C:\Program Files (x86)\1C Company\Theatre of War 2 Africa\users\sound.ini

[config]
SoundUse=0
SoundFlags.hardware=0
SoundFlags.reversestereo=0
Unrealistic=0
SoundFlags.acustic=0
MasterVolume=13
MusicVolume=0
ObjectVolume=13
VoiceVolume=11
MusFlags.play=1
SoundEngine=1
SoundMode=1
Speakers=0
SamplingRate=2
NumChannels=3

after that missions starts and game is "working".
is there any workaround or further information about "sound problems" ?

my system is running win7 (x64).
i tryed to run the game in xp komp.mode and in vista mode. nothing works.
only help was turning OFF the ingame sound.

i had the same issue on a win xp (sp3) system ... (onboard sound and/or soundblaster sound card)

As this game was on budget at my local Saturn market I bought it on last Friday. As I tried the demo several month ago and it worked fine I thought that there shouldn't be a problem at all - what a mistake.

But this error still persists since end of last year and no solution by the publisher - really bad marketing!

I have a GTX 470 (updated to last NVIDIA drivers), too, no 4-core CPU (still running on a well tuned C2D E8400-System), win7 64bit and the german version (published by Peter Games / 1C - Classic-Budget-Label) and the error in the log describes the same fault as mentioned earlier.

So I will return the game for refund to the shop - sadly because the demo was very promising, but that kind of user support is beyond words... or shall I say: 1C again?

Regards
Michael

Dunno what's wrong, i've tried the very same version (Peter Games) on work PC - C2D E8200, 2Gb RAM, Win7 64, but different card - an old GTS 250. Looks like the new video card makes the difference (or its drivers).

Where is your game installed to? Did you try to run it as Administrator (right click on the executable or shortcut and choose 'Run as Administrator'). In addition, uncheck 'High landscape detail' and 'High sky detail' in game settings.
Install Directx9 (having 10 or 11 won't suffice, they use different libraries) using this link (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35) if you haven't done so.

Hi,
I tried the game on three (!) different PCs - from AMD Dual-Core to Intel Dual-Core with three different graphic cards 7900GTX SLI Combo, 9600M and the GTX470 - and yes: I have installed DX9 and not only DX10/11 as I have some other games that also only use DX9, tried the different admin and compatibility things, different locations (not Windows-HD e.g.) etc. and turned down all settings to the lowest profile.

I am no beginner in the matter of PC stuff at all and had few games that didn't work at all - and most of them were known not to work on Win7 64bit systems or with dedicated hardware. But as I read this thread there are people that have this issue with Win XP 32bit and ATI video card - with the same failure! So I don't think its a matter of the OS.

But Yes, I also think that in this case it really could be the fact that the newer (nvidia) graphics card drivers may be the issue for misbehaviour. But as I am not a programmer - and I don't want to invest another weekend to get this budget title work - I think it's the task for the devs/publishers (1c himself) to get it work with todays systems, when they want to sell it these days, or make clear that it doesn't work with actual hard- and software!

So I brought it back to the local Saturn market and told the clerk to inform his customers that this title might not work with newer hard-/software - he promised me to talk to his sales peoples, too.

Maybe if 1C gets some amount of packages back from large resellers they would react and do a bug fix...or withdraw from the stores.

And be sure - that is no good marketing for newer products of this brand at all - and I for myself won't buy any of these!

Regards
Michael

Please contact support@1cpublishing.eu
AFAIK they have found a solution for the Peter Games version.

Hello again,

I tried this fix by myself and it works, but there is one drawback.
You will have to get some files from the other version.
I'll post You a download link:

The Peter Games version is missing a few files.
Please put them in the correct folders.

The files:
Effects\GunFire\050_089mm\mono.sim
Effects\GunFire\007_009mm\mono.sim
Effects\GunFire\020_049mm\mono.sim
Effects\GunFire\010_019mm\mono.sim

All of them are called mono.sim
You should put each one to the corresponding folder in the Effects\Gunfire folder.

Unpack the ZIP file and place the correct mono.sim file to the correct folder.
You can also simply replace the existing folders in Your GunFire folder

Files can be downloaded from here
http://www.sendspace.com/file/pawy58

I'm also adding it as attachment.
Please try this solution and write if it helped anyone.

I'm going to revive this thread, because i have the same problem.

I've tried limiting the threads, i've tried compatability mode, i've tried running as administrator, and i've tried the solution offered by the post above me, none of them worked.

I can change my settings from within the game, but none of the changes make any difference, i've tried playing campaighn and tutorial, and i even tried creating a "multiplayer" battle, just me and an AI and it crashed the exact same way, finishes loading, goes black and straight to desktop

I have the steam version.

My solution was just take my 4 gb of ram that I put in dual channel, it doesn't work..., but the game really worth it to take some of my performance in other games.

Please clarify, the game works for you if you install 4Gb RAM in your PC? How much RAM did you have when the game didn't work?

Markojager

It works with just my original 4 GB, when I put 4 GB more in Dual Channel it doesn't. So I take it out and it works great, but it's a shame has this 4 gb out.

Theatre of War 2: Centauro installation file is missing or cannot read the Kübelwagen 3d object and CTDs when game tries access it. Everything works fine unless it has a Kübelwagen in it. I have reinstalled it several times and Gamersgate does not respond.
