Because one cockpit takes about 6 months for an experienced modeller. And that is just the 3D part. The complexity of models and their systems has been considerably increased. Besides this is currently about the Battle of Britain so there are only a few types that would fit the bill here.

All the aircraft in the original IL-2 didn't arrive with the first theater, they were added over the 8 years of development. It will be the same for the new IL-2 series. If the new series is successfull it will be developed for atleast another ten years and probably have just as many or more aircraft than the original, especially with the tools provided for modders.

Dont feed the trolls...
Nah this guy isn't a troll, he just thinks that quantity over quality is better.
Quality in flight sims is more important IMO, which also makes more sense in CoD anyway because of the advanced DM and FM.

You fool what are you doing!!! Do you not realize there is a troll revolution breaching the walls.... you can't say things like that, positive statements in public they take you away and no one will ever hear from you again.
We have to run, we have to starve them and then in 6 months time we can come back and repopulate this forum with decent folk.

+1 to csThor . . . greatness takes time.
well they could've went the DCS route and only have 1 plane.
Il-2 Battle of Britain Spitfire vs 109. Only those two planes. Until next game in several years.
Just that. Like that old PC game Jordan Vs Bird and you can only use Jordan or Bird :)

WHY - you have been answered that.
WILL YOU GET MORE PLANES - yes, I`m positive about this. We may get a few for free in the next few months, but after that will probably come an expansion with MANY new flyables and AI planes. That is because it is called the Moscow addon which means we`ll have to implement at least 4 flyable Russian fighters, maybe two Russian bombers and maybe 2-3 German planes of different type.
It also depends on which side you fly. If you fly Allies, you may never get your favorite fighter. Why? Because there is so many of them. Look at the Axis side - Bf109, FW190, Ju87, J88, He11 being the main planes with different variants and some Romanian and Italian planes and that`s that. It`s almost guaranteed you will be more of a satisfied man flying German.

Dont really agree..of course your have a fav ride doesnt matter what side you fly..you want to spend all your hours flying one AC thats up to you, personally i like to fly both sides, you appreciated each AC that way too
190,P-51 & certain variants of the 109 would be very nice indeed..
Spit yes.... but Spits a Spit, it would just get better guns and a bit more HP

... Instead of incorporating the Italians and their planes, they should have extended this sim as a, "WW2 western front sim... whatever name you want to give it", at least to a point in history where the F-models of the BF109 were available and also better Spitfire variants.
Italians dont deserve to be in such a sim.
When France was beaten in 1940, Mussolini thought he might as well get a piece of the cake and like a hyena going on a dead body, he tried to attack France as well.
But the Italians got such a hit from the already beaten french army, that they had to retreat. Actually they were not successful on any theatre of WW2. Sorry, I dont want to insult any Italian of today but that is a fact of history!
I dont need italian planes in Cliffs of Dover, only maybe as AI-planes.
I`d have prefered an extended western front flightsim, not only covering the short period of the Battle of Britain in summer 1940.
Well, when I first read that this sim will be released again by Ubisoft, I already knew that trouble was on the way and I was right!
Hopefully the sim will improve in the years to come,....

To be honest, i think the decision to incorporate the Italian expeditionary unit was more in tune to later planned scenarios. A mediterranean expansion has been rumored to be among the first for a long time, so they maybe had this in mind. It looks like a case of "let's include a few bonus flyables that we will have to release anyway in one of the first add-ons", just to spice things up a bit probably.
Maybe their modellers were working a desert scenario in parallel and since there were a few Italian types active in BoB they just though "what the heck, let's put them in the BoB sim too".

Sorry I call bull, that is absolutely not true unless the programming and graphics integration is a mess. Vehicles and mechanical models (like a cockpit) are very easy to make, what is very difficult (and absent) are organic/realistic character models (and then faces). Try maybe 1month max to model a cockpit if you have your research together, another week or two to texture and then you got to get the interface working which I dont know about so I am not sure how long it takes (thats the integration).

The 6 month estimation comes from Oleg. No guess on my part ...

Well that is strange, they must do them all in parallel or something, or maybe they have a very problematic engine/buggy coding that makes the animations hard. I can imagine the first time you make a cockpit it could take months, its a skillset - but once you do it a few times thing become drastically more efficient. Here is an example - my first modeling task ever was to make a haunted house, had about 6 hours a week and it took 2-3+ weeks to do the house and the surrounding terrain. SO lets say 24 hours, I went back the next year and assisted in helping others with the same/task and I could complete the house with about 2-3 hours of concenctrated work aslong as there were no bugs/geometry problems. The same thing applied with texturing models (learning to use photoshop and folding geometry which is a nightmare, but doesnt apply here luckily) and complex animation.
So maybe it was 6 months from start to finish but not just working on the cockpit? So everything from research to animation/interaction (know nothing about interaction because its unique for each engine I believe) and finished sound while working on other projects as well?

The P-40 is an old favourite of mine (guess my sig gives that away:))as my Grandad used to groundcrew for them in the pacific in WW2.
When did the Russians start using these.....and do you think we'll see them in the Russian add-on....or did they use them later than the period that you think the add-on will be for?

end of 1941 theygot P-40B/C , they were first use at the Moskau front area.
Well, as we all thought the next update would be a "Battle of Mosaku 1941/42" scenario, it would perfectly fit .
Luthier just left us wondering with his last WIP talk about that they are modelling a La5. This plane would fit there not at all. So, we have to wait.

I was thinking we were going to have a Sukhoi Su-26 Aerobatic plane as a bonus, not that it's needed but as a way of demonstrating the Flight engine and I seem to remember that all the aircraft were going to have operable doors and hatches that you would be able to pose aircraft sitting on the field with panels open for example. I'm sure the team is really busy considering that the US release is close at hand, so I'm not worried about what is next, first things first.
