Been investigating some of the actions in the North Atlantic and ran across this one.

Honestly had no idea USS Ranger operated outside of the Mediterranean convoy missions. Launched a full on strike of SBD and TBFs plus Wildcat escort. Very interesting!

Very interesting indeed!
A mission based on that could also provide the chance to see how Wildcats do against 109s or 190s. Or trying to counterattack the allied Taskforce with Ju 88 torpedobombers.
Sounds like fun.

Good online scenario anyways. We did a F4F versus 109s on the Battlefields1 server back a while ago. Not sure if we still have something with that going or not. But it's something we could do again. Definitely a fun scenario!

Had that in a fictious encounter over the desert - RAF Martlet vs. 109F - IIRC that never happened IRL - Me vs. AI - turns out the F4F is a serious threat to a 109 if well flown, as it keeps speed well and can absorb bullets alot. And its roll rate make for good defensive and agressive potential, too. On the other hand, Bf109 is faster and climbs better, so if not outnumbered and co-alt, co-E its a fight you shouldn't lose.
Had more fun than I thought I would have(On both sides that is!), on paper F4F just looks like sure looser here, but looks may decieve.

I always had a lot of fun with the Wildcat vs 109 scenarios, always seemed like a good match up.
Skies of Valor has a few maps like that.
Op Tungsten has a Navy vs German set up and the Hellcat was awesome on that, I was out performing 109s on the deck and 190's up high.

Sounds a bit like F86 vs Mig15.

On a whim, I just had a look for Tungsten, it was for real. Wildcats, Hellcats, Corsairs and (eek) Barracudas.

Convoy JW 58 was a bit onesided too, 4 of 17 U boats sunk for no (shipping) losses.

Tungsten plays on Skies of Valor occasionally, the Corsair is the plane that outperforms both German fighters there. The Wildcat can also be fun on that map because it's so surprising, but its main attribute against the Germans is its turning ability and if that's what you like then you might as well take the Seafire, which is also available.
