On 23rd June, 2007, there must be a Red Bull Air Race in Barcelona (Spain). But it was cancelled.

So we made it virtual until it goes back with an exact copy of the 2006 real one. We call it the Red Rook Air Race.

Real colours were painted in Il-2 plane's skins thanks to Finnatar.

This race is about to be used on the II Virtual Championship of Catalonia. For the moment, here's the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRYI3CdBF_E

Il-2 great physics made possible to make this race. There's an existing one in Flight Simulator X, but there the aerobatic planes fly so bad...

Enjoy!

Nice vid Tuckie. I just saw (on TV) my first Red Bull race. Very interesting.
Is this course available for download anywhere?
And oh yes, nice racing skins too.

Nice, is that racing map available for download?

Looks fun as hell.

Red Bull AIr race is pretty cool. I did a copy of the Budapest track some time ago. It has the added challenge of starting and finishing under a bridge.. :) I found the Ki-43 to be the best performer in these tights circuits. Most older maneuverable aircraft all have carburettors, killing the engine in negative g turns. Not a good feature of aerobatic planes!

If there's any interest I could upload it to mission4today ?

I became a Red Bull fan from the moment I saw them.

Vanderstock, your Budapest Red Bull race is pretty nice! :)

I will follow your way and post my Barcelona one into Mission4Today soon, I have to make minor changes on the briefing.

Also consider renaming the race for not be in Red Bull rights conflict; as I know, virtual Red Bull rights are property of Microsoft.

This is for my race is named "Red Rook Air Race".

And some hints; I used as pilons not the ones included in Il-2, that more like the Reno Air Races ones; I used seatowers.

The fact is that I put them as "destroyed"; then you can cross them with the plane if you miss the gate, in the way you don't crash due to a miss, like in real life.

Of course, this implies there must be a judge/controller to crono and evaluate each pilot :)

Thanks for the tip! I'll rename the mission then and I'll try the lighthouses as well.

Pity there is no timing mechanism in IL2 , perhaps in BOB???? :)

vanderstock,
I too took some liberties with your wonderful Budapest course.

First, the bridge was just too durn hard to get under and there are no higher bridges in the Objects list so I did this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/HH_Beebop/Air%20Racing/BudapestMod_00.jpg

And, like TUCKIE, used the lighthouses but left the pylons. and I changed the turnaround to lighthouses, again leaving the pylons so the color coding remained constant with your layout. Here is the result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/HH_Beebop/Air%20Racing/BudapestMod_01.jpg

Latest mod was some eye candy along the race course with lots of spectator seating:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/HH_Beebop/Air%20Racing/BudapestMod_02.jpg

High powered planes are difficult to race with on this tight course. Best time so far, 49 sec. with the I-185. Second best time 58 sec. with an I-16.

I'm looking forward to TUCKIE'S Barcelona course at M4T. I'm just waiting to approve the download.

Any more from you vanderstock?

That looks really nice Beebop! (although the higher bridge takes out all the fun ;) )
Will you upload it to M4T as well? I haven't done any other courses, this was a one-off after seeing the Red Bull Race on TV :) I'll try the I-185 as well, I hadn't considered that aircraft, but I guess it mates high maneuverability with lots of horsepower!

Nice modifies!

Take care that crash area of intact lighthouses is wider than they look, this is why I made 2 versions:

-Lightouses as destroyed (competition version)
-Lightouses intact (hard version)

I'm preparing a powerpoint to include it in the mission pack...

Ah! I forgot to tell you that I have uploaded a downloadable high quality version of the RRAR video here:
http://stage6.divx.com/user/Tuckie/video/1627631/Red-Rook-Air-Race-Barcelona-2007

Finnatar's detailed skins look better on that one! :)

And also a gift, the real Red Bull Air Race video that I made of the Barcelona's race:

Enjoy! :)

I'm glad you like my "tampering".

I agree that the new entry is not nearly as difficult. I found myself wishing, after trying every other bridge object, that you had built the entry at the bridge in the distance which is a much more doable one. But then again I'm just lazy I guess.

Sure I'll upload it. I'll make sure it's clear that it's just an eye candy mod and the real credit goes to you for design. I'll try and get it up within 24 hours.

You have any others? This one is quite challenging. I really like it.
I'd be interested to see what else you might have up your sleeve.

Great videos!

To bad that all the planes in IL2 are so heavy (compared to the 550 kgs of an Extra 300SR the 2000 - 5000 kgs of our beloved warbirds makes the real Red Bull Air Racing manouvres hard!). The Su.26 of BoB will change that! Bring it on ;)

That's just the question... anyway, it's still funny to try different planes in a Red Bull race in Il-2... in my Barcelona's race, a Ki-27 and a La-7 can make the same time.

While La-7 is faster, the Ki-27 turns so tight that it can be competitive! :)

I've uploaded my mod of your Budapest course to Mission 4 Today (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3094)
Thanks Vanderstock for allowing me to share my ideas.

So I/we @ M4T are still awaiting another course from you. What's taking so long?(j/k)

I agree with mazex, those are good videos! :!:

Will you be uploading the Barcelona course? BTW, you can add the race pylons to the lighthouses. The one you chose is short enough to let the top show completely. I think that would help the racer identify which gate should come next.

Maybe this weekend I'll upload the Barcelona's race, I'm finishing the powerpoint for briefing, will pass it to Acrobar Reader format to assure more people can read it :)

If I add pylons to lighthouses there's no space to pass with the plane; the pylons have a side cables that are collidible... another idea is to add lights, but the real Red Bull had no lights on the pylons. However, mods of this race will be free to modify and publish by anyone, I only request credits for authors. :)

So the main difficult is the training in passing pylons at hi speed, and later study the race before making it, just like real pilots do :)

I only identified one point in which pilots uses to miss the next gate, it's the vertical maneuver, but this can be adressed just by... more training! :)

I see. Then they must be closer together than the Budapest ones because I never had that problem on that course. My biggest problem with the "heavys" was making turns that didn't kill both speed and time. But as you say....practice!

I'm looking forward to your Barcelona course. BTW, any word on the actual race in '08? Will they have it?

Before continuing, jus a little more info on Barcelona's Red Bull:

-2006: the major of the city is also a Cessna pilot. Red Bull Air Race is totally new to the city, and the crowd calculated there is over 1.000.000 people. Transport of the city totally collapses!

-2007: new major (not a pilot); he fears another collapse near of voting day. RBAR is put in another day some months ahead, later it is cancelled due to stupid "additional security" requirements by local authorities that Red Bull cannot match.

This is why I made Red Rook Air Race; in 2007 it has not been any RBAR in Barcelona :(
A 2008 Barcelona's race does not looks suitable for the moment. Maybe in Valencia or Madrid, but it's soon to talk about it.

I'm trying to grab some time to finish that PPT... Hope soon I'll upload to M4T; I'll advice here when done! :)

The Red Rook Air Race pack includes:
-Missions (hard and competition versions)
-Files (a readme and a PDF with detailed procedures instructions)

For the moment skins are not included, but there's a specific skin pack made by Finnatar.

Enjoy!

Tuckie,
The Red Rook/Barcelona course is marvelous! :!:

Thanks for the enclosed Powerpoint presentation and linking the YouTube video to the download. This is perhaps one of the best packages for an Air Race map ever!

Kudos!

Also, I look forward to the skin pack.

Thanks for the maps guys... I happened to catch a race for the first time a few months ago, and it looks fun! (I used to do the same sort of racing in cars)... I'd like to try it some day for real, but for now, I'll try your maps :)

Thanks for your comment Spinetti, just updated the download file; the qualifying system in the last page of the PDF has been modified a bit to match the rules of an official championship here in Spain :)

Keep enjoying it! :P
