View Full Version : Are you gonna uninstall IL-2 now?

I was thinking about this earlier today: once we get used to the new FM and DM (not to mention the graphics) it will be kinda hard to go back and fly in IL-2, what you reckon you'll do?!

It will be some time before my computer or most of my squad will be running Cliffs at a decent frame rate, so it stays for the next 12 months or so.

There's so much special in IL-2 1946 4.10.1 and it's unofficial - here unmentionable - contributions that it will take quite a while for CoD to catch up with that... Therefore: No

Two major things - needed by IL2

The AI performance could use some work.
The FMB needs triggers, scripting, events. The FMB could use some programming tools to speed up mission building.

Otherwise, everything is good enough for interesting and exciting use. Especially, since so much has been done with it over the past few years.

The high quality graphics in BOB COD look great, but the graphics in IL2 are adequate for me. I can honestly say, if all we had was IL2 as it is with planned improvements.... I would have NO complaints and I will continue to enjoy it.

As long as Il-2 still has some feature which the new series does not have, I'll keep it on my hard disk :D

I'll keep it,but honestly,as CoD gets optimised and more 'mature' I think il2 will be played less and less.

why uninstall il2? maybe in Three or four years when COD will have the same feature than il2.

and i don't speak about the dynamic campagne system SEOW ;)

because now if you want to make a campaign in pacific...it will be hard with COD :)

I keep it always on a DVD and USB stick as a whole. So in fact it will never be 'uninstalled'.
So even if I delete if from my HD one day, I can anytime copy it onto it again, without much hazzle (or even play it from DVD or stick).

But that won't happen too soon. :)

Il2 will be around for quite some time yet. At least a couple of years.
Il2 has reached a level that we could never have dreamed in 2001.
The same will be for Cliffs of Dover one day but for now, Cliffs of Dover is in its infancy while Il2 is a tried and tested sim.

I am a member of the squad =gRiJ= and for us the il2 is our standard of play, the cod can be better but until they offer something like Seow issue we can not accept it as standard

we can not force our members to change and improve their computers, so I imagine that the cod will take to be a squad-level standard

I fly online only and my squad (AKA_Wardogs) and the FA squad (+ friends) currently fly 20 mission online campaigns with 60+ pilots. Until COD is capable of something like this, we will remain devoted to IL2 1946.

Don't plan to.

With the changes I've installed in to 1946, I get a well balance sim with all the sounds, flight model and visual improvements I like and I can fly missions over Great Britain and France when ever I want.

With Cliffs limited plane set I think I'll be playing IL-2 for quite some time yet. It'll be a tall order to even start to compete with the versatility and the full extent that IL-2 can simulator World War II. There are still theaters and operations I'd love to see yet...

But I can see starting to play them side by side and eventually Cliffs of Dover and subsequent addons will supercede the original game. That's what I want to see :)

Even if/when I stop using it, it's not cost effective to go to the trouble of deleting it.

A 2TB disk costs £60, I can't delete stuff fast enough to make my time pay for itself at the minimum wage rate.

<edit>

Oops, looks as if 2TB drives have gone up in price since I last looked. Still, at £80, the same logic applies, deleting stuff isn't worth it.

I believe you as I have every version of Il2 installed on my PC, from the demo to the latest patch. I have been able to do countless comparisons this way.

Couldn't bring myself to do it. Maybe I'd back up a playable version with all the additions on an external drive. But wipe it? Never!

No.

I want to see what more is done by team daedalus. And sometimes I'd like to just look at a plane skin or play for a half an hour.

I'll also keep BoB:WoV from Shockwave installed. Too many good moments and awesome modding community.

COD is excellent, if buggy, but that will be fixed 1c have a good record of fixing things properly. I think that its trying to use too much video memory, it was jerky on my system ( nvidia gt 240 1mb, i5, 3gb memory ), I turned the video options right down and suddenly it was running nice and smooth.

This is a joke post surely? There's at-least 10-years if not more left in IL2.....by then Cliffs of Dover may be playable ;)

No.

My first impressions of CoD remind me of first impressions of CFS3; not particularly favorable. I hope things get better.

Oh lordy, CFS3!? I really really hope my copy of CloD dosen't end up like my copy of CFS3. I think thats still propping up my brother-in-laws workbench in his 'shop.

Il2 still has a big advantage in the number and variety of flyable planes. I see a potential, here.

With some update in graphic, it could become a sort of model collection, already including the majority of main combat types, and the potential to reach a complete WW2 collection.

Considering the complexity of CoD 3D models and graphics, I think the superiority of Il2 in this field will remain unchallenged for a long time to come.

Since yesterday, I'm back to 1946, too (never deleted it, of course). It had something to do with a last straw in CoD or something
Man, I've had great fun hopping into a plane that actually works! Awesome, it was so refreshing.
And since I've seen the massacre in CoD now, I'm appreciating Team Daidalos' work even more. Hell, I mean they're actually ahead of CoD in some areas. Maybe it's not the most fitting place here, but I just have to throw out a big 'thanx' to TD!
Brb, going to have to bomb something :)

Yeah I had to uninstall it a few months ago, when I got my pc replaced by a dual 64 bit win 7 machine. IL-2 will not run, and I tried most of the fixes.

I can put XP 64 back and Il-2 works (before the machine randomly crashes due to XP 64 suckage)

But I'm looking to build an old single core . . . and throw back on XP 32 bit I just need a non SATA HDD that won't crash in a few weeksk . . . lol. I guess I might have to order one . . . and Il-2 will go right back on there.

On my new machine I haven't gotten COD beta, video card is lame.

1946 works on Win7 64 bit Home Premium for me.

...and ALL the other Win7 versions as well !

I have the Ultimate 64 bit...some of my squad have the Enterprise 64 bit, also the 32 bit versions are used in my squad...no problems anywhere so,
dive into the subject and resolve your issues..then enjoy the game in whatever Win7!
