I guess it's not mandatory to have Steam. This is probably the steam enabled version in a digital download release for people who like steam. Since we know there's another copy protection system as well, my guess is that the boxed editions will not require steam.

^ Pretty sure you're right with what you said.

Still asking myself if the true Steam download version will still make use of the Tages-like copy protection system. Some games sold on Steam do, even if it's kind of pointless due to the way Valve's system works. Even if EA Games isn't my favorite publisher, I still greatly appreciated it when they decided to remove all of their 5-time activation limits from their games sold on Steam.

I think that makes it pretty clear steam is needed.

But i reckon you need to get over yourself, its not the extreme ubi or rise of flight drm.

Probably the most user friendly and you can play offline.

I am happy it's on steam, could not have asked for a better thing to happen. This will give all the computer novices out there a massive helping hand in patching (they do it automatically) plus I can download my game anywhere.

I like steam as well, it can check your install for faults, lets you interact with other players who play the game, gives you an ingame overlay with all kinds of functions and lots of other things.
But aside from that, the only thing I notice when playing a steam game, is the "Starting your game" message and that's it.

As long as it works i'm fine with it. Fine doesn't mean i have to like it, it just means i'm going to tolerate it, because no matter how useful it is i prefer to be able to mod my games and/or rollback a patch if it's causing me problems without having to backup the entire game folder. Generally speaking, i dislike having added layers of complexity that can interfere with my gaming. I don't say everyone should feel the same and that's where the magic word comes in: options. If things are optional and not forced across the board, a lot more people are going to be happy because the end product will work either way.

People are free to have their own opinions and calling them idiots because they dislike steam is like calling someone an idiot for not liking the colour purple: it's a friggin' matter of taste for crying out loud :-P

And if we did in the past, we always called it "re-install"! Not hard at all. And I can interact with other players on forums like this, so how is that a big advantage? And some say auto patching and updating is great. Sorry, would rather do it myself!! We never had steam in the past, don't need it now. It will just mean fewer people will buy the game. Not not so much my loss, but Oleg and his gang's loss. I can still play IL2 and will still do so, at least it looks that way. 1C will be the big loser here and it's too bad.
