how can i make different versions of a unit

i made a version of the king tiger that has the 128mm gun from the jagdtiger instead of the 88mm the normal one has by editing the .def file for it. however, that just replaced the original one, when i would rather make another one in addition to the normal one. how would i do so? and to be clear, i did the editing in a mod folder.

i got it. its as simple as renaming the .def files, which is something i overlooked and probably shouldve seen soone
