I dont think soo.
Mr. Oleg
Once jou said that the Il-2 Sturmovik Battle for Britain is very close to release, and now is all depend from developers. Unfortunately me and many of users of this forum dont have equal feeling. with all respect to jour work and the work of your team. I simply must to ask a question. When the release will be happened ? In the Q1, Q2, Q3 Q4 in 2011 or even in year 2012 ?
I dont understand why you cant answered, or you dont wont answered on this simply question ?
I just gett the feeling that the IL-2 Battle for Britain will be never ending story or, never ending game... If you can not confirm whether the game will be released by December 2011, or ignore the issue of many that put him here, then we can rightly I suspect just that ... That you and your team do not have a detailed time periods in which the game came out. And this is very, very bad: And in my opinion, manipulate of expectations of members.
I not complaining at all. I just wont fair answer.
I hope this thread not will be errased from moderators.
rgr.
Unfortunately me and most of users of this forum dont have equal feeling.

Oleg and his team are working in a gaming genre which doesn't have a large fan base and won't receive any where near the amount of money/praise as they should do in respect to the amount of work and research they are clearly doing to achieve this massive massive game.
You should not moan for a release date just trust that when Oleg feels that this game is ready to be released we will be getting something spectacular.
Look at all those FPS which require F all research and very little time to compile (yes CALL OF DUTY/HALO IM LOOKING AT YOU) and yet receive an unbelievable and a ridiculous amount of praise and money, which quite frankly IMHO they don't deserve.
You have the cheek to moan for a release date, you should be glad that there are ppl like Oleg pouring there time and soul into this genre and will not be getting much in return.
Thank you Oleg and Co for the hard work you are doing for and pushing the boundaries of flight simulators.

:) I can understand the frustration,it is annoying when a question cannot be answered.I think it is a case of Oleg himself doesn't know.
He is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't really. If he states a time and it doesn't happen well he will be slagged off and he also then puts himself under more pressure and may release something incomplete that for an extra 3 months could be so much better.
Enjoy the journey, sometimes it' s better than the destination.:)
IF Oleg does give a release date i hope it is really ready and bug free and fully working before the announcement is made.:)

Trumper pretty much nailed it there. "Bug Free".
We'll all moan if the Sim is buggy, crashes, graphically glitched etc, etc.
I too really want this Sim now, but look if this arrives and it needs patch after patch to make it playable, can you imagine how many posts there would be on this forum alone saying that they had released an incomplete product, we are Beta testers, they stole my money......etc,etc (again).
I appreciate that Oleg and his team are working away to make it 'perfect' and just look at the responses to last-week's update regarding the colour of the flame. That's just the colour of the flame!!!! Can you imagine how many even smaller/larger details they have to contend with and which will be moaned about if slightly inaccurate on release?
So, Oleg, take your time, get it right, but I would ask.....if at-all possible, maybe a Spitfire V 109 Beta/test map released for users to try as at-least this would be a possible 'open source' test for user feedback before the final release.
I don't expect the latter to occur, but when it comes out......I'll raise a glass to Oleg and the crew for all their dedicated work and patience listening to whine after whine on these forums and yet still coming up with what should/will be the best Flight Sim, Combat or Civilian, ever created.
Cheers, MP

1c will publish SOW BOB when they, not we, feel it is ready. The attention to detail however is in my opinion sometimes unnecessarily high and I am afraid the development of the game suffers from this.

Merlin, don't pay attention to what Tree is talking. ;) Oleg's never given a certain release date to us (and Tree knows that). We got one by UBI indeed in november 2006 but that was before the decision to make a totally new engine.
1C Soft Club mentioned that "Il-2 The Battle of Britain" will come out in Spring 2011, at least in Russia.

Actually I agree with all of you. Just thinking, are all this candys (colour of the flames ect...) we reaily need now or when the game will be released... Many times we heard, on maximum settings we can play after few years from release date becouse todays hardware can not handle this game.
I do not want the game to which I'll need or spent a computer for 2000 + Eur. I assume that mr. Oleg knows this and is in a dilemma now, not for me, but for a lot of other potential users.
Once again.
Oleg and his team do a great job. No doubt !
He said, the game have a lot of bugs. Do not waste time on candys but the things that will make the game playible. This is just my opinion.
I love Il-2 very much, and I am very grateful to mr. Oleg some 10 years ..

You never heard that from the devs themselves, but only through (mostly unfounded) speculation. There is no indication at the moment that SoW will have remarkably high system requirements (beyond what can be expected from a flight sim anyway). And details like the exhaust flames won't have any impact on performance.
Do not waste time on candys but the things that will make the game playible. This is just my opinion.
It's probably not the same people who work on the core engine and on such details. Getting rid of the bugs is priority but that doesn't rule out that other areas get worked on. Oleg has indicated in the past that there's a long list of small things he would like to get into the sim if the schedule allows, but not that the release will be postponed for to such details.
Of course there will still be dozens of posts after release, why feature xyz wasn't included and that it would have been better to delay the game for them ;)

You won't have to buy the very top end computer to run SOW. Oleg has a history of providing options that turn down features which will allow average computers to run the game.
We are a fine set of bedfellows aren't we: Oleg and his community.
Any other game announced several years ago but still not available would have been bypassed by the paying public who would have bought something (many things) else and by the time the game they were waiting for came out it would be technologically out of date and not worth buying.
But we have a strange relationship of trust with Oleg. We believe that when SoW comes out it will blow the socks off anything else available and will continue to do so for many years. And so we are reluctantly (if not willingly) waiting.
Oleg truly has cast a spell on us and we hope he will deliver. We're all really thinking the same thing, "why so long?". But we trust he will deliver. And because we believe it will be better than anything else.... and because we are grateful for something so special for such a small market... we continue to wait.... and will not challenge him too hard on it. And so we wait.
But we all wish the wait was over and we shouldn't flame people who get frustrated and ask the inevitable question now and again. Oleg may be a Saint but he's not a God... Yet.

Wanna place bets? Duke Dukem Forever or Storm Of War comes out first? ;) Both have been under development for a long time, both have been shown in public with actual gameplay. Duke Nukem will get a demo though. So which one is it, DNF or SoW? And this is just for laughs!!

What are you comparing this to?
This is a flight simulation not a FPS or an RPG you can't just spit it out it takes a lot more than you think, especially when you have someone like Oleg who CLEARLY has taken it upon himself and his team to produce an even greater simulation than his first.

I would agree normally but this time there isn't anyone else developing a sim like this.
All the others that have started are either more console biased or non combat aviation.
Oleg is the last one seriously developing a new WW11 sim,we have to hope he is going to get it right, lets hope he is the god of the sim world. :)

rather than: Omg i need to get this done fast...
just look at ubisoft`s SH5 as an example.. they set a date, released it... and well, the end for the sh series... or thats what my senses tell me (hope im wrong)

SH5 was rushed and then never supported like it should have been. Thats a damn shame, it was a great series.
I don't think anyone is saying "OMG rush to get it done!!!!!" There comes a point that it IS done as much as can be by the developers. Further tweaks and fixes can and SHOULD be done after release. They are never gonna find and fix ALL the bugs prior to release: Too many user configurations.
Its Olegs call, as it should be, its his baby. And I do have alot of faith in him and his team to deliver the best air combat sim ever.

Well Dano, I was thinking the same thing as Merlin1...I'll tell you, I've been with Oleg and IL2 since the very beginning. and I bought every version and incarnation, add-on that ever came out, not to mention also shelling out bucks for that fiasco for PS3,.. so as a loyal customer who has put more than a couple dollars in Oleg's pocket, I feel I deserve some consideration in return.. But this SOW release is turning into a bit of a sad joke..we've been waiting now for more than 5 bloody years already!! Oh..it'll be released in Jan 2006, then sept 2006, then march 2007, then Dec2007..then on ..and on, and on...yawn..the REAL war didn't last this long.... can I be so bold as to suggest, why not do as was done with the IL2 series, release the darn thing, and then fix the gliches and bugs as we go with patches and updates. that would also be a much better, faster way to get glitches discovered and feedback ...

Easy Tiger. I know it takes a while to develop these things but it has been under our noses for five or six years so someone is going to ask the question now and then. And why not?
We do have a special relationship with Oleg because he IS the only one making a sim like this. We, well I at least, want it badly and we have to put up with the fact that it is taking a long time. If anyone else had brought out a comparable sim in the meantime we would probably all be playing it and saying "SoW delayed? So what?" Its a two way street.
My personal bottom line is I am getting fed up waiting for it and I'm not the only one. But we have no choice except to wait.

Il-2 was released fairly bug free. The updates were mostly that updates, not bug fixes.
I've been waiting for SOW since its first announcement in 2003/4. Finally we are in the bug fixing, optimization faze of SOW. Except maybe for the completion of the German Campaign.
This could take months depending on the severity of the bugs and optimizations. Take note how long its taking to debug the 4.10 patch, although they aren't working full time.

I think for me its the lack of updates thats most annoying, yeah i know we get some pictures and some video if we are lucky every week, but in truth of late they have been fairly dull. What updates i would like to see is a monthly report from Oleg letting us know where the project is at, maybe an estimated release date or news of a website or some news on what problems they are having, obviously some video footage of 100+ aircraft being attacked would be good but this may well be a long way off. Its Christmas 2010, and we still havent seen the game running properly with mulitiple aircraft, we have no dedicated website and no system specs, hopefully we will see a release next year but it does seem we are still a long way off. Oh and Zapatista, get those shorts of yours in the oven buddy.:grin:

Really?
Oleg is the only large budget games developer I have ever come across who
has given dev updates every week for such a long time. Also for such a long

With other developers you get a blog post from someone in the PR

We all know that the game:
a) will be released when it is finished, and
b) will be finished when it is finished.
So, the game definitively is'nt finished yet.
Even so, Oleg has time and recourses to spend on minor details like the color of the exhaust flames, a detail that is allmost never visible, and 99.98% of the time has absolutely no impact on how the game is experienced.
This tells me that
a) the game must be very close to finished, or else Oleg would have used his resources on more important problems
b) the game is probably in a testing phase where most of his resources are spent on trial and bugfixing.
How long such a task as ironing out the last bugs of a such a complex game can take is very hard to predict. Just think of 4.10. No wonder Oleg wont give us any releasedate.
But the updates could be more interesting, though..

Is this game like the ordinary dross we're fed? No it isn't. It's so far beyond the mundane FPS junk that's rattled out, it's not worth trying to compare them.
Are we lucky to have the updates we get? Yes, very lucky. It's amazing that Oleg listens to us at all, and we are privileged.
Are we lucky that Oleg is making this game in the first place? Yes, very lucky. He’s a fan like us, and capable of producing something far better than anyone else.
Is Oleg in a position to give an accurate release date? I doubt it. You don’t know how long it takes to fix bugs, and whether fixing them will create new bugs.
But…
Does Oleg have a better idea of when this will be released than us? Of course. Now I don’t blame Oleg for the decision to keep us in the dark, I don’t know what he’s agreed with publishers, but someone should be giving us some more details. Like where they’re currently at, and general time frames, which won’t be set in stone. Then if there’s a set-back, simply tell us. It’s the lack of any information that’s irritating. It’s not that we’re all impatient children, but we have to spend serious money on PC upgrades, and an idea of whether it’s wise to make these upgrades would be helpful. We aren’t all in the position to just wait before upgrading, some of us have old machines that are desperate for an upgrade. Should we upgrade (inc new OS) but use our old graphics cards for a few months, as the game is still a long way from being finished? I don’t see the harm in the developer giving us a little more info.

On the list of things that are important in my life this is not anywhere close to the top. Therefore, by extension, this is not something that I'm going to get angry, upset or otherwise fed up about.
Now everyone go down to their favourite pub, sports bar, or establishment of choice and have a round. Ok?

It almost was. Oleg mentioned at SimHQ that during the big blackout, the project was halted by two particularly troublesome staff members and they caused it to be very nearly dropped altogether. Way over dramatized, yes the developer removed two troublesome staff members, that may or may not have been key people. That may of had its part in delaying SOW, but I highly doubt this would have spelled the demise of a project headed by Oleg and Luthier.

Triggaar mentioned it: It blocks our Investment in new parts.
I'd would like to switch from 4 to 6 core, and also throw out my 260.
Unfurnately I cant justify to buy card since I don't know which card is needed for SoW.
For instance:
In case of a release 1stQ 2011 I will just wait.
Incase of 2ndQ 2011, I could just buy a 470 now, enjoy it for 6months, and get a new one when the game is out.
But I dont know the release date!
Sure I could just buy the 470, but then oleg surprises us with a February release and I have to buy a new card again.
Even if you sell an almost unused card you'll lose at least 30% which is in the 3digit range.
Or I could buy a 580 today, which offers performance I dont need(now) for a price I dont have to pay, because I don't need it before July - again 3digit loss.
So, you see several parts are affected, also their prices detoriate pretty fast. If you add it up, we're talking about a potential $300+ we lose just because we bought them too early. Even worse if they cant do the job...
We cant plan and therefore are screwed either way - it's just not cool.

I understand your point, but isn't the 260 good enough for a few more months? Maybe the Simhq interview out in a few weeks, will provide a better idea of the SOW release time frame.

just wait to buy em till the game comes out if your waiting for it
if you play other games and need upgrades, upgrade

just wait to buy em till the game comes out if your waiting for itBut a lot of us have already waited a long time to upgrade, and it could be another year yet, so we can't just keep waiting (our systems are grinding to a halt). As swiss said, do we buy stop gap parts to tide us over, because by the time it's out there will be better hardware available, or is it close enough to release that we should get the best we can now?
The point is that these are not difficult questions for the developers to answer (ie, rough timeframe).

It's all very easy. If you need (or want) to upgrade now you upgrade, if you don't then you will get more technology for your dollar if you wait. It's been the rule of thumb since computers were invented.
The point is that these are not difficult questions for the developers to answer (ie, rough timeframe).
But look back on the history of how 'rough timeframe’ released by Oleg and co have been treated by the community. A 'maybe' is treated like something set in stone. 'Should' is translated as definitely.
How can you give a timeline when optimising a section of code or removing a bug may require a whole section of the programme to be re-written using a different algorithm?
When Oleg and his Publisher (who ever that may be) are confident of a release date, they will probably tell us. Be Sure!

Fine, but many ppl here are focused on SoW and are also willing to throw a 4digit investment at it.
They justify the investment only with SoW. No storm of war, no expensive rig.
In my case that means I'd like to upgrade for a certain sum, however SoW would easily double this sum.
Yes, I do play a few other games, yes I could use a better card, but those games alone dont justify a $600 card(plus CPU etc)
Trigaar f.i. needs a new system(I guess), but he wants it to be tailored for SoW, just like many of us.
Till today, we don't have slightest clue of system requirements - I mean, they are already debugging, how much can still change?
Heck, even a timeframe from announcement to release would help.
Like; from the time the dedicated hp is running it will take 12(or whatever)weeks till it hits the shelves.
They don't even have guess here - this timeframe is absolute.

Optimization is one of the last things done, and one of the most important aspects of figuring out system specs. We all know that this game will be very demanding, so we could assume the developers are working overtime to get as many possible frames per sec possible. The last thing the developer needs is a sim that will not run properly on average systems. So either you have to optimize as much as possible and/or start dumbing down features until computers become more powerful.

It's all very easy. If you need (or want) to upgrade now you upgrade, if you don't then you will get more technology for your dollar if you wait. It's been the rule of thumb since computers were invented.Read the previous posts. If you need to upgrade now, should you get some budget parts (like a budget graphics card) that'll you'll want to replace again by the time the game comes out?
But look back on the history of how 'rough timeframe’ released by Oleg and co have been treated by the community. A 'maybe' is treated like something set in stone. 'Should' is translated as definitely.
How can you give a timeline when optimising a section of code or removing a bug may require a whole section of the programme to be re-written using a different algorithm?Yes I understand your point, but they have a better idea than we do, and it's all about communication. They said many would be flying online by Oct 10 - they must have realised that wasn't going to be the case a fair while before then, so just let us know. It's not like it's taking time because they're being lazy, so why not just be upfront and keep us informed? The 'rough timeframe' is something they'd keep updating, it's not like they'd say 'about 4 months' and then say nothing again until after 6 months had passed.
When Oleg and his Publisher (who ever that may be) are confident of a release date, they will probably tell us. Be Sure!Yes, but they have a better idea than us, so why not share it?
ive probably built 5 gaming rigs while waiting for SOW... enjoying other games in the meantime ofcWell you have more money to spend on PCs than most of us.
Trigaar f.i. needs a new system(I guess), but he wants it to be tailored for SoW, just like many of us.I couldn't wait to build a system (old one had become such hassle with XP, and too slow to work), but I built it without a new graphics card. So I now have an i7 with a GT6600 graphics card - a bizzar mix. That means no current games until I upgrade the card. Thinking the game would be out sometime around 6 months, I've ordered a new GC, but honestly, if we were told it could be up to a year, I'd cancel that order and wait for the next generation of cards. But I'm just an example, there are others waiting to upgrade, and we're just after some information, we're not simply being impatient children.

Storm of War: Battle of Britain is the first instalment in the new Storm of War franchise from award-winning developer Maddox Games. Every day it's delayed means the system I'm going to buy to run it at max will be cheaper.

Every day it's delayed means the system other people bought early because they were too impatient will be slower.

The 71st anniversary of the Battle of Britain sounds nice to me. Sort or like this sim is so cool it can be fashionably late to its own party.

Tut tut, Tree. That's not accurate and I gotta call you on it. ;) The comment was "NEEDS to be" and "HAS to be" released in 07. It implies a less than hard date IMO..... as opposed to, "Nov. 17, 2007 BoB will be on store shelves and in your living room PC."
I think everyone but you understands the comment was his desire or even fiscal need to release BoB:SoW as opposed to a hard lined release date.

I was a little inquire into term and the time needed for the game development. I do not know whether it is true, that Oleg developed IL-2 for about 10 years. Something tells me that a eliminate the bug's still take a long time. At best, we can expect SOW BFB for Christmas next year.
I will be very surprised if it will happen before.

There's a lot of talk about a supposed huge number of bugs that still need to be fixed, but I have no clue where this is coming from. Certainly not from the devs. Anyway, as explained above already, currently the publisher aims for a release in spring.

Easy - You aim for Christmas, once you realize you can't make it you go for spring instead.
Better than delaying till following x-mas...
You know what really sux?
Check out the 1c games section and take a closer look at the announced games.
There are games announced for Q4/2011 - nowhere a word about Sow though.
Considering SoW is an inhouse development...

In software, it is very difficult to say when a final product can be released. However, it's very easy to look at the backlog of work remaining and estimate the number of weeks it could take to complete this work. Looking at this, you can say with absolute certainty that the product will not be released before that time has passed.
This planning information is never made public, but it would be revealing to know how many weeks are currently in the development team's backlog. 2? 6? 16? If we new that, we could say for sure that SoW will not be released or even out of validation before 4 months.
Somehow, that would be more gratifying to know than.... nothing!

On the list of things that are important in my life this is not anywhere close to the top. Therefore, by extension, this is not something that I'm going to get angry, upset or otherwise fed up about.
Now everyone go down to their favourite pub, sports bar, or establishment of choice and have a round. Ok?
Its because they are all keen to get started on:
- complaining about how the cows are the wrong color for 1940
- pointing out how the spark plugs on the spitfire have the wrong gap setting
- demanding 0.50 cal so they can complain about it being porked :D
none of these important exercises can commence until SoW is released :D

I never post on here i just usually sit back and wait for updates, but on the off chance that Oleg and his team actually pays attention to these things (and i hope he doesn't) i feel its time i chime in. I do not know of one other company or person that allows this kind of interaction of a games development and even goes so far as to ask for tips on specific items of concern prior to a game coming out and then using the feedback in final game content. Now maybe a lot of game developers do this and i just don't know but i have been gaming for almost all of my 31 years and have NEVER once come accross this personally. Threads and posts like this one show you very clearly how human nature can be. "if you give a mouse a cookie". While the rest of the world sits in darkness waiting for the next iteration of there favorite game series to come out if ever, we enjoy constant although at times intermittent contact with the very person that is developing our favorite game. Now to some this may seem like an opportunity to consistently demand more and more and more and more. (mouse-cookie) but for me i consider this to be a great privilege and i look forward to any and all updates that we receive. I truly hope that the abusers of this privilege (you know who you are ) take into account that the access we have and the interactive way in which Oleg and his teams go about making these games is NOT a requirement by any means and at any time (much to the detriment of the game and us) they could decide to not do this type of development any more and leave us all hanging in the breeze with no word for years just hoping that our new game might be in the works. Now like i said up top i truly hope that all of the impatient and seemingly ungrateful mice that refuse to just accept what they get as OVER and ABOVE what they normally get, will not spoil this for everyone who really appreciates this approach to game design and development. but I guess it would not be the first time in world history. Many Many thanks to everyone who works on these epic flight sims that are in my opinion still the very best ever made and thanks for your unique and appreciated approach to how they are created.

I wondered on the extent of Olegs involvement In BOP at times. I doubt Oleg had as much to do with Birds of Prey as you suggest. Olegs comment about the BOP developers not providing the info about Dover he requested, especially when he let them have access to the IL-2 flight model, suggests very strongly his non involvement.

They are measuring twice and cutting once, which is really all anyone can ask for.
Merry Christmas all
I never post on here i just usually sit back and wait for updates, but on the off chance that Oleg and his team actually pays attention to these things (and i hope he doesn't) i feel its time i chime in.

Try Wings of prey (pc version) doubt you will see this before the sale is over on steam in 12 hours but its a little over $5. Use realistic mode, it will help time pass for SOW! Hopefully if it was profitable those funds will get channeled to SOW.

I would gladly miss out a few weeks pics in the updates for a sentence or two to let everyone know just how SOW is progressing, it doesnt have to say anything about release dates, system specs or even websites...just a few words to let us know what stage they are at right now and what happens next.
