Here are some photos that may be of interest to the development team and model makers.

Maybe we could keep this thread for posting photos of special interest that we feel the
development team and Oleg ought to see, and for photos that we feel are essential in some
way for the betterment of the game.
It could also be a place to post scans of photos that aren't available on the internet.

It might be an idea to limit content to photos of equipment and special/unusual aircraft features
(no photos of fires, explosions, gun-cam, trees/hedges, clouds, or general aircraft photos please)
so as not to get out of hand.

These are from the BoB period:

Badge awarded to those who had used the GQ parachute (one sort of GQ parachute was used with the Defiant). They had to apply for a badge from the manufacturer if they wanted one:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y129/major-setback/album%202/GQ01.jpg

About the parachute and award:

http://www.britain-at-war-magazine.com/news/shot-down-in-the-battle-of-britain

From Wikipedia:

"The gunner's hatch was in the rear of the turret, which had to be rotated to a side to enable entry and exit. There was not enough room in the turret for the gunner to wear a seat-type or back pack parachute so gunners were provided with a special all-in-one garment nicknamed the "rhino suit". To quote Frederick "Gus" Platts, air gunner in 230, 282 and 208 squadrons, "The Rhino suit we had to wear on Defiants was a bear but I couldn't come up with an alternative, even though it killed dozens of us. I forget the details of it but we could not have sat on our chute or even keep it nearby as in other turrets, so you wore - all in one - an inner layer that fitted a little like a wetsuit of today. The chute fitted around this, and then the dinghy and the outer clothing. There was inner webbing and pockets that literally fell apart (I presume) when one bailed out"".

Ouch...

I can't imagine how they felt about sitting in that turret... I thought that the (B17) ball turrets where a .Ich to sit in. Could there be enough time to get the.. out of there?

Very, very nice.
This parasuit was later used by other bomber crew too; it wasn't just limited to the Defiant gunners ;) It's extremely rare though. Pictures of it are scarce, so these pictures you've posted are awesome :D

Well found ;)

Actually, the suit you have posted is different though; it contains the so-called Mae West, but not the parachute. This harnessuit was made in much larger numbers and was made in a pilots version(which only had provision for a seat-pack parachute), an 'observer's version (which only had provision for the chest-type parachute) and then a version which combined both ;)
It's hard to judge, but this looks like the pilot version ;)

Both suits look quite similar.

There is a good time team to watch for people who live in England, it's on 4OD.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/time-team/4od

It's a dig on Shooters Hill in London and shows the typical defences that were used in the early years of the war when they thought that Germany would invade. It's quite a good one!

The Führer's Special Train (Führersonderzug in German) was a train which was frequently used by Hitler to travel between various headquarters throughout Europe[1]. It also served as headquarters itself; it was called FHQu Frühlingssturm (Spring Storm) when it was located at Mönichkirchen, Austria during the Balkans Campaign in the spring of 1941. The train was named Führersonderzug "Amerika" in 1940, and later, Führersonderzug "Brandenburg". After the Balkans Campaign the train was never again used as a Führer Headquarters, but Hitler used it throughout the war when he travelled between Berlin, Berchtesgaden, Munich and other headquarters.

The exact components of the Führersonderzug are not known, but some details were revealed by the departure information "Bln 2009", when the train departed the Anhalter Bahnhof station in Berlin on 23 June 1941, arriving at Wolfsschanze on 24 June 1941;

The individual 17 components (locomotives and cars) in order were[4]:

Two locomotives in tandem, behind them were:
a special Flakwagen (armoured anti-aircraft train flatbed car), armed with 2 anti-aircraft guns, most often a pair of Flakvierling cannon batteries, one at each end of the car
a baggage car
the Führerwagen, which Hitler personally used
a Befehlswagen (Command car), including a conference room and a communications center
a Begleitkommandowagen, for the accompanying Führer-Begleit-Kommando
a dining car
two cars for guests
a Badewagen (Bathing car)
another dining car
two sleeping cars for personnel
a Pressewagen (car for the press)
another baggage car
and finally, another Flakwagen
Otto Dietrich indicates that the Flakwagen never had to be used when Hitler was travelling. The "Pressewagen" was not for journalists to come along, but to receive and release press reports.[12]

There were other special trains (Sonderzug in German) as well, used by prominent German officials[5][6];

Ministerzug (Ministers' Train) was used by Joachim von Ribbentrop and Heinrich Himmler
Sonderzug "Afrika" (also called ""Braunschweig"), used by the chief of the Armed Forces High Command (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW))
Sonderzug "Asien" (also called "Pommern") was used by Hermann Göring
Sonderzug "Atlantik" (also called "Auerhahn"), used by the supreme commander of the Navy (Kriegsmarine)
Sonderzug "Atlas" (also called "Franken"), a command train used by the Armed Forces Operations Staff (Wehrmachtführungsstabes)
Sonderzug "Enzian", a command train used by the chief of the Intelligence branch of the Luftwaffe (Nachrichtenwesens der Luftwaffe)
Sonderzug "Ostpreußen" (also called "Sonderzug 4"), used by the Army General Staff (Oberkommando des Heeres (OKH))
Sonderzug "Robinson 1", used by the chief of the Command Staff of the Luftwaffe
Sonderzug "Robinson 2", used by the chief of the General Staff of the Luftwaffe
Sonderzug "Steiermark" (also called "Heinrich" and "Transport 44") was used by Heinrich Himmler
Sonderzug "Westfalen", used by Joachim von Ribbentrop
Sonderzug "Württemberg", used by the Army General Staff (Gen. St.d. H. - Generalstabs des Heeres)

From:
http://www.chu.cam.ac.uk/archives/gallery/ImageoftheMonth/CHPH_12_F1_47.php

"Churchill with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth inspecting the damage caused by bombs which hit Buckingham Palace at the beginning of the Blitz, in September 1940. The King later described to Churchill how the bombs blew out the windows of the room opposite where they were sitting, made two great craters in the palace quadrangle, bursting a water main, and wrecked the chapel, while the Queen is said to have remarked to a policeman on the day after the bombing that she was glad they'd been bombed, as she could now look the East End in the face."

Not photos but an excellent aircraft manual for the C.R. 32 with lots of drawings of the structure and the systems (fuel/oil). Just in case Oleg goes Med next.

Interesting information on the Hurricane landing light:

"Walking clockwise around the aircraft, there is nothing remarkable about preflight of the wing, until arriving at the landing light. The first time I saw it, I thought the mounting was broken, but upon closer inspection, I realized it moves! Some designer went to a lot of trouble with this item. In the original airplane, the landing lights were used one at a time, controlled by a three-position switch. A "dipping lever" adjusted the aim, and a knurled knob locked the lever in place. Loosening the knob would allow the spring-loaded lever to move to the up position."

Spent a good part of the morning catching up on this thread (slow season). Really, really great stuff! It really brings home why they call the place I live 'New England', especially when you visit the older towns and the small villages. Nice for setting the mood.
