Hi I was just loking at those aerial photographs on Xilon_x thread and got to wondering what historical targets will be in the area modeled by the sim, and what about other landmarks.

We know the tower bridge wil be there, but how about the docklands, major railway stations etc?

When I was living in England for a couple of years I lived a short distance from the Battersea Power Station (The Four Chimneys was one of my drinking holes!!!)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Battersea_Power_Station_-_geograph.org.uk_-_794104.jpg

I understand it was a key target during the war (The power station ... not the Pub!) and would be very hard to not see on a clear summer's day. (even though it had only two chimneys at the time!)

What other targets/landmarks should be there.... or what do you think should be available to drop a load on?

Cheers!

A while ago BoB modellers were asking for information on :

Dover castle
Deal castle
Canterbutry cathedral (unsure)
Dover Castle
Dover harbour
Hampton Court
British Museum
Nelson's column
National Gallery

The obvious too:
Buckingham Palace
Tower of London
Westminster Abbey
Houses of Parliament

We've also seen:
Stonehenge

Does anyone know of any more?

From that thread I posted it looks like Battersea Power Station might have looked different in WWII (two chimneys).

Jutocsa (SoW building modeller) mentions the bank of England too in this thread.

Along the south bank of the Thames, looking upstream, on the right are Grosvenor Bridge, the Chelsea Bridge and Battersea Park.

Yes, SOW developers were looking for pictures of any historical buildings and typical homes of the era. It will be interesting to see how detailed the towns and villages will be and still have playable frame rates.

I was really interested in the BOB map being made for IL-2 by the 352nd group. The initial screenshots showed very detailed airfields, etc, but in the end there were very few objects placed for frame rate issues. The other BOB map made for IL-2 had huge amounts of buildings but the photo realistic terrain they were placed on sucked at low level, at least for me. I have a total aversion to FSX style blurry low level photo realistic terrain. Uggg

Hopefully SOW's new engine will allow for large amounts of highly detailed objects. I know its the developers dream to have everything cinematic. Here's hoping he succeeds.

Your absolutely right, the second part of the power station was introduced in the 1950's from what I've read.

In that picture posted by Rodolphe, it's easy to see why it would have been a good target. In a very small space you have the Power Station, a major railway bridge, a road bridge and in the top left a gass storage facility. It is surprising it didn't get bombed.

To the top of the picture you have Battersea Park. South of the park (from my very sketch memory) you have two rows of the old terrace houses and then miles of huge post war council high rise building that stretch off into the distance.

From talking to locals in the pubs (the MOST accurate method of determining history even though it's actually quite difficult to recall the facts the next morning) the Germans never actually hit the power station but flattened miles of the suburbs to the south in the attempt!

Cheers

It must be difficult for the developers to decide what to include in the sim. Many of the Iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace weren't actual targets. ( I know the the Palace whas bombed but it was by mistake ?????? Imaginge the bragging rights for that one!)

Without these buildings London would, just not be London, yet as a sim we'ld be more interest in a rich assortment of stategic targets (though then again I could be wrong?????)

As the docks were a major target at the time, I wonder how the variety shipping models are comming along. I wonder if a fire boat has been thought of? With operational water cannons!

Well as far as targets/landmarks go I hope they have done this address for fun :)

None of this is essential as its a aircraft sim but is of interest to some.
