Stuck at a mission :(

Hello, this is driving me crazy, im at the mission where heretic offers to go to alien systems for artifacts and all that , so we meet in system x220 or something and we do what we went there to do ... anyways, after returning from that mission, the last objective sais "Escort Heretic to inhabited systems", well thats fine by me , we set our course and fly until a pretty large group of ships ambush us and heretic dies ... no mather what i do they kill him and sais "game over"... i tried everything that i could think of but still nothing, he keeps dyeing. I tried different weapon loadouts and different aproaches but they still get heretic ....

Am i missing something ? How did u guys pass this mission ?

nevermind, after several attempts i managed to save heretic and i just noticed what happened before, heretic was always in the wrong place at the wrong time, some grey ships jumped in and killed someone and that someone was heretic , he was in their firing line probably ... anwyays, this time they blew up ternie (along with one of my most expensive and best fighter i had) and took her while heretic was on the other side of my mothership at the time (pure luck lol)

Ternie's scripted to bite it at that moment; first time I played this mission I was perplexed how she died since her ship was in good health. Reloaded and kept a very close eye on her, same thing. So I left her on the mothership, wa-la, she still disappeared but I didn't lose a ship this time :-P So now every time I come to this mission I make sure to leave her docked. Well, unless you have a spare ship you don't mind getting blown up.

Heretic's survival is kinda random, that's the annoying thing about allies and one of the few things that can mess up even a powerful team. I tried using the systems specialist Hero's hack skill on the greys (haha), it did freeze the target but they're scripted to disappear quickly so I didn't get to kill it. Had plenty of fun blowing them up in the subsequent rescue mission though.

lol , funny how scripts can work in ur favour ... anyways now i reached a point where admiral trump gave me the Lion MK2, does this mean im near the end of the game ?!?! if thats so ... then too bad, i didnt even managed to max out the perks for my pilots , some of them are still flying 2 gen fighters lol ...

Yeah. I finished my first go in a few days too. But don't worry, each path's storyline is quite different, it's actually worth playing them to see what each faction sees happening.

Protip: when the game asks "You are about to embark on a long range journey, do you want to skip directly to the destination?", choose 'No'. This way you need to manually fly through all the systems to the destination system, BUT this is also the "free roaming" period where you can take your time to shoot up pirates, chase after rumours, build your team pilots' exp and gain loot.
