Installing on Windows 7

My IL2 1946 DVD ROM will arrive Tomorrow and I intend to install it on Windows 7 Home - 32 bit.

Will I need a patch in order for it to run as I have read that some people have had issues with windows 7 but mainly on the 64 bit version?

Microsoft website says that an upgrade can be bought for WIndows 7 but when I go to the ubisoft website it simply shows the latest IL 1946 DVD (which I have just purchased) and only refers to 2000/XP pro in the product OS requirements.

.............thanks for the reply but (going to sound dumb now.....:grin:) but what is UAC ?

I assume that since I am the Administrator and only user thats basically it......apart from running a.exe which I guess will be in a folder after I complete the install.

No, a.exe is the installer.

Install IL2 1946 to a directory outside of the Programs folder

IE:

C:\IL2\IL2 1946 v4.09m

This allows you to make file changes to the IL2 directory files.

Some people also report that running the IL2fb.exe as admin helps.

If you want to turn off UAC

Thanks for all the info guys, Only just installed Windows 7 so getting used to it! I wondered why every time I installed an application I had a dialogue box come up asking me if I wished to allow the application to make changes to the computer. I Will install outside of the program folder onto the C root directory as suggested.

Thanks for all the info and advice but I ran a.exe and installed IL2 to the root directory but when I launch the game I am prompted to run IL2FB (which I have to do every time I launch the game). The game then loads and immediately drops into a video of an Aircraft Carrier and I then end up in a screen with Pilot Profile, Training, a few Single Missions for various countries, configuration Options, etc, but there is no campaign listed and the choice of ac is very limited for the few single missions that show up.

Have I installed this correctly? I would have expected with all the expansion packs to have a lot more missions and campaigns showin up on the opening menu. A campaigns folder has been installed on the hard disk.

Also, I am using a Cyborg X but the only Joystick I can see in the Input Device options is the HOTAS.

Any help or pointers would be a great bonus, thanks.

There should be a manual in the IL-2 directory which shows how you start campaigns etc - they are accessed from submenus - you should be able to access all the flyable planes through the Quick Mission Builder too.

Thanks for the link Andy, absolutely brill as it points to so many useful threads and other links. Anyway IL2 installed correctly, downloaded/installed the patches 4.08 and then 4.09 and everything OK but I have a hell of a lot of reading to do....and practice!............:grin:

The best way to install the game in Win 7 is not to install it at all but instead copy the folders from and old install on XP or Vista if you were so cunning as to keep one. IL2 in no way needs the few registry keys that it installs, it will run perefctly with no registry keys.

One of the registry keys is there simply to populate the game in your "Add/Remove Programs" list. Which is totally unnecessary since nobody would ever want to unistall a game like IL2! But if you did you could easily just manually delete the folders. I had the Windows 7 RC1 ( beta ) until a while back and I played IL2 from another hard drive I had XP installed on and it worked flawlessly! I also copied the folders and files into my Win 7 beta drive. I now have a permanent copy of Win 7 Pro coming in the mail and will do the same thing and will have absolutely no problems by doing so. No need to install IL2 and Vista was the same way. I also migrated from Win98 to XP by doing the same thing at first but later I did in fact install IL2 to XP anyway.

Fearfactor said it all: I just bought a week ago a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium and copy-pasted the installation folder from my old XP to the new W7-PC. Everything works fine, no need to do anything special tricks. Haven't tried multiplay with my friends yet but I guess it works fine also.

...but remember: ALWAYS use original DVD's when installing. Otherwise there is a possibility to have some sort of problems...

.I did read it, I just posted my info so others might do this if they upgrade to Win 7 in the future and have a copy of IL2 on Vista of XP now.

To save cluttering up my root folder (C:\) I created a folder called "Games" where I install all games, so nothing sits in the rot of the drive.

Just another option.
