I've been playing Il2 for a few days and am getting the hang of it, the problem is when I go online or in a mission, when I get behind a bomber or a fighter, I can't keep my cross hairs on the target, I use a keyboard, a joystick is on its way. Is the answer to me not being able to keep my cross hair steady from the keyboard or does it take a really long time before I'm able to kill?

Hi Sups, welcome to the forum.

Though one or two people can manage with a keyboard, almost everyone uses a joystick - it makes everthing so much easier. Even with the default stick setup you should find your aim greatly improved, but for best results you will probably need to experiment a bit with calibration: most people find it best to reduce the relative sensitivity towards the centre, to aid 'fine tuning' your aim. It helps a lot to have the plane properly trimmed too.

If you need help with setting up joysticks etc, I'd start by looking at Bearcat's Nugget's Guide here:

Edit: Link problem - Google 'Ubisoft Sturmovik forum' and you can find it there (It is also on the Mission4Today forums somwhere).

Oh.. I just made a thread about this. I can't buy a joystick, makes the game almost unplayable to me. I think there could be a command to gradatively increase or decrease turn speed just like the engine for exemple. It would make the keyboard simulate the the real thing better.

I think you will struggle without a joystick, Meketreff. Though a few people have apparently managed with just a keyboard, I'd be hopeless without a joystick. I'd have a look around and see what you can get hold of. Even a gamepad-style stick works after a fashion, provided it has analog input - I started off with one of these. If you can't afford to buy one right now, ask around amongst your friends to see if you can borrow one - it will give you a better idea of the advantages.

I'd say that if you are at all interested in IL-2, or in flight sims in general, a joystick is well worth spending some money on. You will probably get to use it more than you would any other kind of input device, and if you get hooked on IL-2 (like most of us on these forums), the 'cost per hour' is almost nothing.

You CAN play Il-2 with a mouse - there's a selection of programs which will emulate a joystick using mouse input. I'll put up the link if you want. Why can't you get a joystick? I've seen them for as little as £5. :)

I'd like to see about the joystick emulator. You are both right, it does worth a lot buying a joystick. I'd buy that and some headphones but I know I would only take an avarage priced one (for quality and better luck on durability) which I won't afford soon and my ATI video card is also dying I think. I live in Brazil, the taxes are the haviest in the world - as means to pair up with corruption -, eletronics in especial.

I wish I had found out about this game earlier. Wacthing the tutorials was overwhelmingly cool. The first PC game I had when a kid, simply by chance from a magazine 'bonus', was F-22 Lightning II (96) and never another flight sim, becouse I never found great reviews for one in the genre. Is it complicated to apply the joy emulation? It sounds great. Know which one works best with IL?

Ah, I see! That sucks! :( Here's (http://mission4today.com/index.php?name=ForumsPro&file=viewtopic&t=5881) the thread for a full guide and all the files, you'll have to register on Mission4today to download the files, but that's worth doing anyway for all the awesome skins and missions that are on there. Hope that works out for you.

Sups, you should try this.

I had some difficulties installing but I got almost everything ok (the look view I couldnt). It is strange at the beggining but in a few flights one get into it, especialy if was using the keyboard. Its almost impossible to aim at the keyboard and with this is much better, the flying sensation too. Funny tough I've been failing to land every single time, It is a lot easier with the keyboard to me but I still want to learn it with the mouse anyways.

Its great tough that someone can still use both and change atm when pleases. It also seemed to improve the looping maneuver by far, it more rarely comes crooked now; I think the harshness of the button would skip the ball to much. Turning speed (for me, second to aiming in importance) goes noticiably faster since it can easily keep the edge of the secure degree, very handy during battles when someone is on the tail.

The only way for the keyboard to work nicely in movements or aiming is by rapid clicking but thats exhausting. The sensivity configuration whithin this program could still get some improvements for perfection maybe, but idk how to config for some testing. This shows that the joystick is really much better overall and not frustrating/tiring, as I thought so and you guys said.

Thanks for caring guys! I now wonder if a joy is still significantly better than this.

This movie shows the Joystick&Rudder control movements/responses required that you can never achieve with a keyboard.

One cannot over emphasize the importance of the right equipment for this Sim.

You'll definitely need a joystick and even with that it'll take a while till you manage to keep the crosshair stable.

Always keep in mind that having good hardware (joystick, track ir, throttle, etc.) gives you an advantage that no training can offer to you.
Don't fell into the "I can do it with keyboard or mouse" trap.

even at disadvantage with twisty stick, can't even keep your plane from side slipping for any long amounts of time or your wrist gets sore, and its really hard to hold your plane at any exacting degree of side slip when your trying to aim...

whereas with rudder pedals just a small nudge of your foot does the job, and u can hold the rudder exactly where u want it for as long as you want without it affecting your ability to move the stick, and without tiring out your wrist (and not all planes have trim, so don't go there :P )
