Hey guys, just bought 1946, downloading now...

Does anyone have any good suggestions for mapping "free look" or whatever it's called?

I seem to remember this being very irritating problem when I played Il-2 a long time ago on a friend's computer. You had to use the mouse to look around, which was really impractical (difficult to manage joystick+mouse at the same time).

I remember trying to map the "lock look" or whatever it's called to the hat (where you look all the way in one direction in the cockpit) but that's not great either because then you can't see all the stuff in between the "extremes".

Any suggestions other than buying TrackIR? (not an option!!)

Try F9, should do the trick.

Now, say good-bye to your social life, you're now in the IL-2 world

I use the sofware "Joy to Key" to emulate mouse movements with my POV-hat.

Version 3.7.9
http://www.oneswitch.org.uk/2/I/JoyToKey/JoyToKey.htm

After installation, create a profile named IL2 or whatever you like, and go into the "others"-tab and check the "Use POV switches" option. Then you can assign mouse movements to your POV-hat. You will also need to remove any bindings in IL2's control sections to the POV-hat, to avoid conflicts. This software can also emulate other mouse or keyboard functions in case a game you're playing cannot identify joystick buttons. IL2 however, does that, so I'm only using the mouse emulation.

The "FreeTrack" solution mentioned above appears to be a way of emulating Track-IR / 6DoF by use of a webcamera, so if you have a webcam you could also try that. Try both solutions and se wich one suits you best.

I use the f9 key also, its irritating wen we realease the hat button the image goes centered again! I have a key on joystick to center the view.

if you don't have a webcam, i suggest you to buy a ps3 eyecam. I got mine for about 23 euros, configured with freetrack to run at 75fps (the same refresh rate of my monitor), it's fantastic, very smooth...

I use JoyToKey as well. I usually have it set to a mouse speed of 80 in each direction.
