Hi all,

During this summer, I visited Dover and The White Cliffs. This area is Battle of Britain related. I highly recommend a visit. There are no fences to protect you from a 1,000 yard fall over the Cliffs (300 meters in European language:cool:).

Thanks Leit.

Yes, the White Cliffs of Dover have always been a threat to European invaders for the past 1,000 years. Dover is the nearest point to Europe and is of course a magnet for European invaders.

This is a WW2 British song about the White Cliffs of Dover. Sung by the Forces pin-up girl Vera Lynn.

<a lot of nice pictures>

Sorry, but you are not correct there. 1,000 yards is 3,000 feet, 1,000 feet is about 300 metres. Neither of which is the height of the white cliffs:

... the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, rising to 162 m (530 ft) above sea level.

Thank you very much for the great photos.
Beautiful song too.

Is the music of the song "Somewre over the rainbow" in the film "The wizard of oz"?

No, "Over The Rainbow" (1939) and "The White Cliffs of Dover" (1941) are two completely different songs written by different people. There is some irony in "White Cliffs", if Wiki is right---it was written two Americans. The Special Relationship in action.

The truth is, us Yanks are merely misplaced Brits. There is really no Irony at all.

P.S. Very nice pictures Avro! Brings memories of some reenactment events at Dover castle back to mind.

Thanks for all your interest:cool:

I have a few more pics regarding Dover but with a military slant. Dover has had a military presence going back over a thousand years. This is a picture of the Roman watch-tower that overlooks the Channel.

Dover Castle was later built in about 1100 on the same site. The Castle has been updated over the Centuries, particularly when Napoleon threatened invasion during the late 18th and early 19th Centuries.

Dover was shelled by German Artillery positioned on the French Coast about 20 miles away (32 km) from 1940 until 1944. This is a map of where shells and bombs fell. 2,226 shells fell on the town during this period.

Avro_UK,

what kind of camera did you use for those pictures ?

having lived in Kent for 6 yrs, and done the channel crossing probably around a 50x in all weather and seasons, i have never seen the channel water look as invitingly tropical light blue as it did from some of the initial water shots you posted (looking down on the water from the high cliffs)

the times i have flown over it in an aircraft it also would look more dark and grey, the same as the closer to the water visuals you get from the ferries or coastal roads, but in the aircraft this would obviously have been for significantly higher altitude then the cliff height shots you just posted now.

i'd hate to have Oleg create a tropical channel water color after all his hard work, instead of the cold and somewhat menacing grey colour it has during most times of the year that i remember.

I used a Pentax Optio S30. But I've since upgraded! The weather was almost perfect. A very sunny day in July last year. The pics do accurately represent the sea at that time. Yes, almost Med-like I agree.

The following two pics are of The English Channel in November this year. Taken at Southsea near Portsmouth.

Re Dover

I just got turned back trying to get to France its mayhem !!

Little bit of snow and all hell breaks loose.

Nice pics MB, its hard to get non Hazy shots around Dover.

I know the docks and Dover area very well and to have "non hazy" pics it must have been almost perfect weather there !!

Our south coast can have "Med" looking water at times especially in the summer.

I hope they get our pebble beaches right in SoW, not just the generic sand we have in IL2.

And we dont always have murky grey looking water on our South East coastlines :)

Thanks Avro,
These pics will get us further 'revved-up' before BOB SOW is released by Oleg and Ilya and their teams.
I was also facinated in the 'Dover' WWII film footage.
Good work!

PS How is the 'cold snap' going? I have heard some terrible stories on the news! It is 35 degrees celius down here in the 'Land of Oz' and the cricket has been great.
