Been thinking about buying this since I enjoy good flight sim games, but was just wondering if it will work with Vista 32?

SOrry if it's been asked before.

Nice, thanks. :D

This game still have a solid multiplayer community?

And how difficult would it be to get into the game as a newbie this far into things?

@Windchaser

if you are into console games then BoP will be right for you but if you strife for a challenge closer to realism then 1946 will be better for you.
Btw, 1946 should be much cheaper, just be ready to spend what you saved with the software (and more) with some hardware (Hotas, Trackir, etc..) when you are finally addicted. :-D

ROFL too true. Saw the game online for sale for $10 bucks. That's a deal for sure. Then I started looking at all of the joysticks since I just have a little cheap one now and there are some NICE ones out for sure. My GF is giving me that, "Don't you dare" look, too lol.

I love WWII flight sims like European Air War, the MS one, and flew a 109 in WW2 Online, but somehow missed this one. :( My 360 died last night when I decided to get BoP and 1946. Coincidence? I think not. :D

EDIT: Just purchased 1946 from D2D and was wondering if there are any highly recommended or must haves when it comes to downloads/mods?

For starters the pure game is quite enough as one needs mods at this stadium only for eye candy.
Just download the essential patches 4.08m and 4.09m and take to the skies.
You will find the real challenge, from my point of view, only online vs. human opponents.
Then, after studying some forums, you will find, if needed, a mod-pack that satisfies your needs.
Have fun and welcome to our community.
Btw, for intensive Training there are 2, afaik, fighter schools online available for free:
in german, with some english speaking tutors, the JFS http://jfs.sturmovik.de/
or in english: http://www.joint-ops.com/

Nice to hear that after so many years IL-2 (1946) is still selling :)

Got everything installed and patched up.

Is there a way to run at my monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050?

Curious too why I can't set Landscape Lighting to Excellent or Landscape Detail to Perfect. Only going up to high on these options for me.

For native resolution open your conf.ini in the game-folder with the text-editor and use the following settings:
[window]
width=1680
height=1050
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=1
EnableResize=1
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

and for (my) optimal settings with a ati 4870 use this settings:
[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=0
TexFlags.UseDither=1
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=0
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=0
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=0
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=0
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=0

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=3
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=2
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=0

PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

also in conf.ini.

Perfect settings work only in open-GL!!!

For additional info you might look up "sturmowiki" in google (in german)

Have fun

Rob, you are the MAN! :D

Would those optimal settings of your's work with an 8800 GTS 512?

Wanting to tighten the game's textures up some. Looking pretty choppy and blurry for me so far. Will try the reso fix first. :D

I'm not super technical, keep that in mind, but I'm wondering: How do you know that you're setting these properly in the config file for the hardware that you have?? I have an ATI 9600, for example. So how do I know I'm setting resolution and everything else optimally, understanding that if I have it set incorrectly, or expecting too much from my hardware, that I will either see the result, literally, and/or my fps will drop??

Right now, the game looks pretty darn good to me, and my fps are adequate, so I'm inclined to leave well enough alone, but still, you don't know what you don't know, if that makes any sense. :)

Thanks!

Coog

If one owns a nvidia card the following changes are necessary:

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1

And as i have written, thars MY settings for MY system, maybe you have to change something to make it perfect for your system.

@Coog

One must use trial and error. Make a backup of your conf.ini and start changing and finding the best resolution.
If you understand german you might look for conf.ini in sturmowiki there is everything explained.

Now I just gotta get all of my key bindings set up lol that's a lot of stuff. :D

Going to mess around with those config.ini settings too. The resolution helped make things look somewhat better, but the textures still look muddled/bland.

My system set up:
2.4GHz Quad Core
4 GB RAM
8800 GTS 512
Vista 32bit

In case anyone has any suggestions on what might work. :)

Having a problem perhaps someone can help with.

My gun sight is only showing about half the sight. Haven't been able to figure out what's up.

For all aircraft, or just German? German sights are offset and can be centered. I believe it's Shift-F1 or something similar.

I downloaded the patch and just double clicked it in my download folder and it automatically installed itself after picking the installation directory of 1946.

Robtek <S>

Thank you so much for these truly mind-boggling settings which I am now using with my Ati 4890.

"Mind-boggling??" you may say, and the reply is Yes. For the first time I am no longer seeing either colourful (and unwanted) artefacts during flight, or the dreaded purple hue in the pit when near fires or firing guns, using nav-lights, etc.

Did you tune these settings? If so you are a genius ;) Thanks again

Is there any reason as to why my virus scan would be picking up il2fb.exe as an artemis trojan?

Downloaded it from D2D.

Try move it off to another folder and rescan. If you've got fast internet, you can delete and re download and see if same thing happens.

Might hit up D2D support pages and see if are issues similar to yours . . .

I've had that happen on torrented / news group games (they say a trojan or detect it as a virus, say something bad is embedded in it) . . . If I really like a game I buy it.

Also if you got a weak scanner like mcafee or norton, they might misdiagnose it.
