How did the upper gunner see anything to shot & did they actually shoot anything down as the gun is fixed?

Same with the lower gun, whilst it is fixed in position, least you can see something to shoot at, if only briefly.

The information you request is found in the 4.09m pdf guide, not in the readme as noted above.

Here is the info you seek about SM.79 and gunners:

Gun positions
Dorsal and ventral positions are covered by doors. These doors open automatically when there is an
enemy in sight (either aircraft, ships or vehicle). The doors can also be opened/closed manually by the
pilot via "Open Cockpit" command.

Recommend you download and read the pdf guide.
you can do that HERE (http://www.f16vs.se/fil/4.09_Guide.pdf)

Thanks guys - found it in the pdf document.

however, I have a key set up for opening the cockpit & that key does not work as the doors don't open - any suggestions?

also the I-16 wheels don't come down with the gear down/up key I have assigned, I have to use the manual down/up key I have set up.

I think that is correct, the I-16 gears only go down manually - I think in the cockpit you'll see a crack or soemthing turning as you "manually" put them up or down by repeatedly pressing the button.

Yea, it's kinda of irritating - maybe a little over the top - maybe only the time it takes to manually deploy should have been simulated - not make you "manually" deploy.

noticed the handle turning when putting the wheels down - using the manual approach makes sense seeing as it a handle to turn to lower the wheels, rather than moving a level or switch & they come down automatically. at least I get to use the manual gear down key now!

Since the first IL-2 I-16 (and F4F) don't have automated landing gear.
You need use manually funcion to lower/raised, and hit key... 52 times. :)

Or make a macro for this with your joystick software, or soft's like SVMapper, NewView...

The "open cockpit' command does not work for me. I flew a Corsair for a minute and opened and closed it's cockpit a few times to confirm I was using the correct command. Then I flew the SM.79 as both upper and lower gunner and the command did not work. It only opens for me when a enemy approaches. Why are people saying the command works when it doesn't? Unless I have a strange and unique bug that only affects my game??

U have to open and close the hatches from the pilot's seat, not when u are sitting in one of the gunners positions.
