View Full Version : A question: how do you manage speed during dogfight ??

Hi all,

Yesterday night, I took part to a very very long (especially for me) and large SIM dogfight where Spit were confronted to BF109 over Dover.

I had a very hard time, basically average score was 7-8-9, I had only 2 wins (that i got at the very very end) Arrrgggg. I was in a BF109 F4 which could have been an excuse ;) if my fellow teammates would have underscore as well (wich was not the case  )

One reason of that underperformance is that dogfights were occuring at very low speed. And I didn't manage to get in.

Afterwards games were far better ( I was in the average score ) for me as dogfights occured as let's say normal speed which is FULL WEP.;) :o;) ;)

But even in those next games I was confronted to, let say, ACEs, who did manage their speed far better than me. (It changes from the IA)

:!:So my question to you is:
How (when) useful is it to reduce your speed during a turning dorgfight ??

Because I well understand that when you are reducing speed you are also reducing the radius of your turn which is good , but you are also increasing the amount of time required to make a full 180° turn which is not good

Do you have an idea??

EDIT : Currently I only reduce my throlle to O-10-20% when I try to ge my opponent overshoots me, but I lost a lot of maneuvrability

Hey, I was in those games :o, my first sim-mode games. It was really cool :)

Anyways, I will not pretend Im a pro at sim, because I have only played a few games, but they went pretty well.

About the speed: dont be afraid to cut your throttle to 0%. If you are still going to fast, make some barrel roll behind your enemy. Also, I noticed that not every one in the game realised that your turning radius will decrease, of you decrease speed. Due to this I was able to outturn spits with my 109 k-4. The turn RATE will decrease as well like you said. But the smaller turn radius, will make you turn inside their turn, thus giving you an angle to fire on him (most of the time). The smaller turn radius with the lower speed, is also nice to shake someone off, since he will overshoot your turn, and because of his bigger turn radius, he will never have angle to fire on you.

Also, when turning, put combat flaps (if you did not allready).
Thats all the advise I can give for now, but I'll be playing more sim from now on :), so prob I will learn a thing or two more myself :).

Hope to see you again in the skies !

did you put combat flaps ?

And by the way it is not a bad thing per se ;). If you have some altitude, and a enemy on your six, 0% throttle and forcing a spin, can be a nice way to shake him of.
Try to use the 0% as well to try and stay behind someone. and the barrel rolls realllly help ;)

EDIT: after the first title update, the dogfights will change I think. It will be less about turning, and more about efficient energy flying. we will see :)

(sorry for posting 2 things, couldnt get this quote in my 1st post)

YEP You were there too SoulSurfer :grin:

That's why I arrive to the conclusions that we are very few to play SIM on the Xbox live :( :( and most of us are on that very forum wich is however great :-)

I mostly play offline on the PC, but I use high Yo-yo's myself. That way I keep my energy, but can still get inside them, and if you'e coming down with a high deflection, they can't get a bead on you before you're out of range. If you do this on someone who in a low turn fight, and they try to engage you, you get them low, slow, and going in a semi-straight line.

The problem is, you're very vulnerable at the peak of the yo-yo. If someone else is above you, they can pounce you while you're slow at a high angle of attack. On the other hand, yo-yo's and vertical turns are the only way I've found for BnZ planes to get inside TnBers in a turn fight. Ya picks ya poison.
